Yesterday, I lost someone I love. Not to old age, although she was up there in years. Not to anything other than negligence by our country's administration. Dawn Wells died from complications of Covid. I’ve spent an entire day and a half trying to reconcile my feelings about this. I know there are several stages of grief, and frankly, I’m not sure where I am in those stages right now. I’ve known Dawn for over 20 years. From the day I walked into her office in Burbank, California to apply to be her bookkeeper, where I pretty nearly plotzed when I saw Maryann from Gilligans Island sitting behind her desk. She could not have been nicer, more genuine, not at all presumptuous. Just the epitome of kindness and grace. And thus began my decades' long relationship with Dawn. Yes, I was her bookkeeper, but then I became her friend. We could talk for hours: we were both actors, and I learned so much from her in that respect. I was involved in her Film Actors Boot Camp at her much-loved ranch in Idaho, where I watched her mentor young actors, encouraging them, making them feel at home in their actor skin. In these last few years, after I moved to Atlanta, I still worked for Dawn, but I just didn’t see her in person. So my relationship with her became over the telephone. We could still talk for hours, but of course it’s different when you’re not face-to-face, as we all know lately. And Dawn was not tech savvy, so there would be no Zoom meetings for her! 😄 [Ironically, I cannot find a photo of me with Dawn - we didn't do selfies, I guess! That saddens me, but I have my memories in place of photographs.] And now she’s gone. And I won’t get to tell her how much she meant to me, although I hope she knows. And I'm angry. I’m angry that we’re a nation that will not take care of our people. I’m angry that there are humans in this country that are selfish and entitled and careless. And I’m angry that the coronavirus has become so politicized that we are allowing our people to die. I love you, Dawn. And I’m sorry we let you down. Fuck you Covid. Fuck you Trump.
