The Westeros of Aegon’s youth was divided into seven quarrelsome kingdoms, and there was hardly a time when two or three of these kingdoms were not at war with one another. The vast, cold, stony North was ruled by the Starks of Winterfell. In the deserts of Dorne, the Martell princes held sway. The gold-rich westerlands were ruled by the Lannisters of Casterly Rock, the fertile Reach by the Gardeners of Highgarden. The Vale, the Fingers, and the Mountains of the Moon belonged to House Arryn…but the most belligerent kings of Aegon’s time were the two whose realms lay closest to Dragonstone, Harren the Black and Argilac the Arrogant.

Sixty ASOIAF!Dany moments that deserve more appreciation from the fandom - Her compassion (20/60): Key moments (before the fall of Astapor) showing Daenerys’s determination to free the Unsullied

Unlike what her detractors say, Dany didn’t start a war in Slaver’s Bay just because she needed an army - instead, she acted out of compassion for the slaves and made plenty of sacrifices to free them, especially in the Red City. During the negotiation with the Astapori slavers, Dany could have only asked for the available fighting men, but she also asked for slave boys who hadn’t been trained (and who wouldn’t be much of help for her to retake Westeros) because their lives matter just as much to her. She could have “sail[ed] far and fast and never look[ed] back” and hired sellswords in the Free Cities (which is what Barristan had advised her to do), but she believed she “must find some way to buy them” instead. She could have only bought two thousand Unsullied (which is twice the number of soldiers that Jorah had advised her to buy) with the three ships (and the possessions inside them) that she had, but that number “would never serve for what she meant to do” (i.e., start a slave revolt and end slavery in the city). Later on, she could have decided not to risk her own life on the battlefield because it was not at all certain that the Unsullied would decide to rebel against the masters, but she did in order to liberate the slaves in Astapor. 

In hindsight, Dany telling herself that “I must find some way to buy them”, that “I must have them all” or that “it is my only choice” to trade (and risk the life of) one of her dragon children for the Unsullied becomes all the more powerful because we know that that’s not really true. We know that she had plenty of easier options, but she chose to go to any lengths to free the slaves because she made it her duty as queen to “protect the ones who can’t protect themselves”.

“I want to sail now, not on the tide, I want to sail far and fast and never look back. But I can’t, can I? There are eight thousand brick eunuchs for sale, and I must find some way to buy them.” (ASOS Daenerys II)

Two thousand would never serve for what she meant to do. I must have them all. Dany knew what she must do now, though the taste of it was so bitter that even the persimmon wine could not cleanse it from her month. She had considered long and hard and found no other way.
