the girl next door

“Tory’s got that same issue, in her hips.” For some reason he kept thinking about it. Tommy sighed by his feet.

“Tory’s had a hard go of it,” she replied softly and he pushed the form away from him, moodily.

“She’s too young, to be dealing with all that,” he muttered and Tommy laughed humourlessly.

“We were all too young,” she said, and he remembered she was out on her own at sixteen. She turned to look up at him from her place on the carpet with wide, staring eyes. “Including you.” Tommy had startled him a little when she first started calling the events of his childhood abuse. He had never thought about it in those terms before. He still wasn’t sure how he felt about it.

He stroked her face, tapped the tip of her nose. “Yeah, but girls got different problems.” Now he couldn’t stop thinking about it, about how young Tory was and already so angry, so ready to kick down the world and tear it to pieces. What made her so angry like that? Tommy clasped her hands atop his thigh and rested her chin on them, gazing fondly up at him.

“I like it when you get all in your Daddy feels,” she told him, and he felt his cheeks flush a little. “I think she’s finding a lot of healing with Aisha.”

Johnny snorted. “Diaz put her off guys for life, huh?”

She wrinkled her nose at him. “That’s not really how it works. Tory’s known who she is that way for a while. Mostly she was just worried she was rebounding and would hurt Aisha without meaning to.”

He contemplated her tenderly, stroking back strands of hair from her face. “What did you tell her?”

Tommy blinked, tilted her head into his hand. “I told her it isn’t worth denying herself happiness cos maybe things would go wrong. Getting hurt, hurting others - it’s inevitable when it comes to love. That she just had to go for it anyway.”

He felt himself smiling as she spoke. “More than a pretty face.”

Her brow shot up. “Did you doubt?”

He tweaked her chin. “No. I always go for the smart ones.”
