I’m back! • I mean, I didn’t go anywhere exactly. I have been in one of the worst reading slumps i can remember tho. • I think I just aggressively dislike predictable books and when you’re forced to read it because it’s a buddy read… well, go back a few posts and you’ll see my rant. • Anyways, 1984 pulled me out gently, cause I wasn’t expecting much. Then the Lunar Chronicles pulled me the rest of the way with love and joy. • I loved them for enjoyability, seriously fun read with very memorable and distinct characters. 5/5 • The plot was predictable, but only because I know my fairytales. And guessing how the author was going to incorporate them was it’s own sort of game. (Though, overall, the series does loose a few points for the lost royalty trope and the… idk, I won’t kill the villain, I’ll be merciful, oh they stabbed me, it’s on bitch… murder that is self defence for the sole reason of showing how morally upstanding the MC is. What else were they going to do with that villain? You can’t lock up someone with mind control!) • • Ahem, I’m out of my reading slump. That’s the take away here. So watch my read count catch up to my goal now! (I’m at 14 out of 57…. Tiny review! • 3/5 • The political stuff was very eye opening and I finally understand everyone who says this book belongs in non-fiction these days. • One thing I didn’t like was style. It’s very obviously an older novel but it has the annoying tendency to slip from present moment to remembering something in the same scene. It also doesn’t tell a very compelling story to me, I was honestly the most engaged when he was reading the brotherhood manifesto. I wanted to know how and why this type of government existed more than I wanted to know Winstons story. • In fact, I sort of hated him through the whole book. He’s sort of pathetic and self righteous, he’s incredibly sexist, and his torture didn’t resonate with me since I didn’t sympathize with him from the start. • Honestly, I’d be really interested in a more modern retelling with a bit more tension. F E A R • • What have you not read/written because of fear? • You know what I’ve noticed recently? Almost all the YA books/TV shows I’ve read that have an English origin (I’m talking North America, Australia, Britain etc) have a whole lot of dark drama. • Maybe it’s because I’m currently knee deep in Chinese dramas at this point, but where is the humour in our English media? I’m not talking funny lines, or sarcastic comebacks, I’m talking about the absurdity. • I was watching a serious show, except the MC has to deal with a stubborn donkey. He goes so far as to hang an apple in front of its face to get it moving. Absurd, but fun. What does this have to do with the plot? Nothing beyond maybe showing how creative/silly the MC is. • I started reading a YA novel I won’t name cause it’s not this particular novels fault, and the foreshadowing and build up was so dark and obvious it was making me want to throw away the book in frustration after 50 pages. I’m sure the story is good, my friend is enjoying it, I’m just burnt out with all this... heaviness. • What happened to funny adventure stories? Why is everything so seeped in social justice politics? I’m not saying those stories aren’t important, I’m saying they are literally all I can find right now. • I think the Chinese/Korean/Japanese are better at media than us... by a lot. Activity • • I’m being really inactive since the beginning of this year... even before this. I can’t seem to find motivation. I knuckle down and loose steam and have to force myself, with everything. Nothing feel fun or new or exciting right now...
