I’m so sorry for the confusion! Tokoyami (and all of class 1-a) has a TEMPORARY hero license. Meaning they can only use their quirks in public when they are under the supervision of a pro hero. (Todoroki iida and midoriya got in trouble for fighting stain without any hero’s present). Dark shadow is only allowed out in public when they are interning under hawks! Once tokoyami gets his true pro hero license dark shadow will be legally free, which is actually Tokoyami’s biggest motivation to becoming a hero in my headcanon.

Tokoyami and Dark Shadow arguing? I know it tends to happen since they’re always together, maybe sometimes they don’t see eye to eye or agree on some things. 🤔🖤

Tokoyami and dark shadow used to argue a lot in middle school (The Dark Ages) but nowadays their communication and trust in each other is MUCH better and these fights happened more rarely. Regardless of the time period pretty much all of these arguments are from tokoyami being to controlling and dark shadow being frustrated with their lack of freedom. Tokoyami prioritizes their safety, but he is also paranoid and can be too strict. Shadow isn’t allowed out in public, or even during school unless it’s lunch or training. Sometimes when shadow tries to speak tokoyami will shush them for no good reason (either it is embarrassing or incriminating) and shadow gets so sick of all the rules. So all that exasperation builds up till they can’t take it any more and they snap.

Dark Shadow also tends to make impulsive decisions which toko tries to stop but sometimes shadow slips past him and gets them both in trouble. Fumikage tries to remain calm and forgive shadow but he may snap at them for a moment.

Their argument are rarely physically violent but mentally their anger and force of will can hurt the other. Shadow can give tokoyami some pretty bad migraines even unintentionally.

There isn’t really a resolution to this problem unless tokoyami gets over his trust issues and the quirk use laws are suddenly lifted.

To get right down to the meat of it todoroki and tokoyami are very similar, they can seem cold or unfeeling and then turn to just as hot and rageful, although dark shadow is more angry then Fumikage. Their odd ways of speaking makes them stand out and they can be overly blunt. They both have experience in restraining parts of themself, specifically their quirks but also their feeling. Finally they have a connection, as Fumi points outs, as being the successors of Endeavor and Hawks.

In the beginning of MHA todoroki was extremely closed off and never used his fire. For as much of a powerful presence he had, Fumi and shadow had very little interaction with him he and didn’t register him as a threat. Once todoroki started using his fire he also opening up and that cold demeanor disappeared. I would imagine their friendship started through small interactions that showed their similarities and opened up for a closer relationship.

Tokoyami sits right in front of todoroki in class so it’s easy for them to speak to each other, especially for dark shadow because they wouldn’t get caught by the teacher. Todoroki was more confused by a sentient quirk than most people due to his lack of socialization but that is also what made it so easy to move past. He just assumed this was some other thing he had no idea about that was completely normal and rolled with it. Dark shadow gets so bored in class and will pester todoroki if they can slip past Fumi. It’s certainly noted that at first shadow was wary of shoto’s fire power, but shoto is such a calm presence they never felt like they were in any danger.

Conversations between fumikage and todoroki are simple and easy. They usually spend most their time together just enjoying each other’s company in silence. There are times one of them will go on a tangent about their interests and the other will listen happily. Dark shadow will often start a conversation when they are around and Todoroki enjoys dark shadows excitement. Todoroki doesn’t have many hobbies so he likes to join on games tokoyami and dark shadow will play like cards or board games, he gets really confused and loses every time but it’s still fun to watch shadow and Fumi bicker. I would have to say the best arrangement is when Midoriya is also part of their hang outs because you have two hyper characters and two calming ones and they even each other out. Tokoyami has to often play the parent tho and make sure the other three don’t get into trouble (he usually fails).

One of their conversations topics is their mentors . Both of them have big shoes to fill from endeavor and hawks and will talk about the future. Todoroki inevitably talks about how his dad treated him and tokoyami has to play therapist again (he likes helping his friends, it’s his calling). He understands the stress of having a strict parent who wants their child to perfect. He reminds todoroki that even if endeavor is trying to be better, that doesn’t make his past actions are ok and it’s normal to be angry about it. “Mental scars don’t heal so easily.” Todoroki likes asking tokoyami for advice after that. I do think shoto has panic attacks from ptsd and early on no one had any knowledge about this (eventually everyone will have ptsd but shush) except tokoyami and he immediately started grounding techniques for him. After tokoyami rescues hawks from dabi, he gets triggered by shotos flames and todoroki has to return the favor.

In general tokoyami and dark shadow are surprisingly close to todoroki because their personalities mesh so well (they are autistic your honor). By the time the provisional license roles around todoroki and tokoyami are good friends because in the survival training ova todoroki refers to him as such.

Haha nice!!! I collect random stuff like this too! My weirdest piece in my collection is a piece of cardboard I found on the ground that I think looks like a baby dragon!

I wish I had more insects or bones but I only collect stuff through foraging so far. The soda tab collection is something I also have but I want to turn them into jewelry eventually so it’s not that weird.

MANGA SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT

In the final battle Hawks and tokoyami switched places and hawks was knocked unconscious instead. AFO immediately tried to steal dark shadow. Can tokoyami and dark shadows combined force of will keep them together or are they to weak and injured? Either way, even if AFO does get Shadow they aren’t going down without a fight and will tear him apart from the inside. Shadow will die with him and tokoyami will be alone.

Something silly but here’s some stuff that I think tokoyami should have in his future house. A proper nest is a must so he needs a bed that’s comfortable and protected so it has to have walls/curtains and lots of blankets and pillows. The next is his “training room” which is more of a play room and it has a really tall ceiling because he loves to climb and perch. I based it off of bird toys but also dancing equipment.

I know that dark shadow and Tokoyami have different personalities, but do you think there's anyone they feel the same about?

There are a couple people who could fit that but I would say the best answer for that is Midoriya! If we are strictly following canon their first interaction is with mido asking tokoyami to join his team and making some perfect analysis for dark shadows capabilities. Tokoyami was thoroughly impressed and dark shadow was very flattered mido was paying so much attention to them. The thing that makes this unique is that their friendship starts on equal footing, with mido recognizing both tokoyami and dark shadow from the beginning. If you want to delve into non canon lore there was an anime short released that has the class return to the USJ to do some actual rescue practice and tokoyami and Midoriya got to interact there. Midoriya gushes on about how cool dark shadow is and tokoyami just looks so shocked.

For tokoyami and dark shadow it is rare for someone to recognize dark shadow much less regard them as their own individual, ESPECIALLY from a first impression. This is probably the only time it’s happened to them to be honest. Tokoyami tends to create a divide between himself and others because of their lack of awareness for his Other. It takes time for people to understand and get to know dark shadow before he can tell them about their true individuality. From having an avian mutation to a “villainous” quirk people are mostly afraid of him, much less willing to accept a sentient quirk on top of that. But Midoriya bypassed ALL of that, he finds them amazing and cool, so tokoyami allows himself to form a connection in turn.

Talking to Midoriya makes Shadow feel like a person. They feel recognized and get the attention they have been craving, and tokoyami couldn’t be happier for them. The only other people to regard dark shadow so highly were their grandparents, and now they are gone. For however much of a divide tokoyami makes between himself and others, dark shadow’s is twice as big. Shadow is a creature of darkness and everyone else are creatures of light. They long to be close with others, to walk in the sunlight with them, but it’s just not possible. Tokoyami can bridge that gap, he can walk in the light for BOTH of them, but it’s not the same. Midoriya doesn’t even know how important it was to Shadow that he took that first step and reached out to them first. Maybe this is a little dramatic but shadow has big feeling and is very emotional actually.

On a completely normal note, there are lots of things about Midoriya that tokoyami and Dark shadow both feel the same way about. Mido reminds tokoyami of dark shadow, he is excitable and chatty and actually pretty funny. Shadow thinks Midoriya is adorable with how expressive he is and loves to tease and get reactions out of him. They are all smiles when mido is around. He is never judgmental towards others interests and even said their room was cool.

There are also lots of things shadow and toko have in common with mido. Midoriya has a kind heart but also a dark side. When Shadow was going on a rampage during the summer camp he was determined to help save everyone, that sacrificeing nature to protect others at any cost is one the twins know well. When mido leaves UA that self isolation and destruction is all too familiar of a darkness for tokoyami to sit back and let happen. Midoriya is also…odd, he can be creepy with his mumbling and taking notes on people which can weird people out but tokoyami understands his odd nature and see him as a kindred spirit. As a consequence of their unique behavior’s, both tokoyami and mido were bullied growing up, and you know what they say, misery loves company. Really, Midoriya’s embodiment of both light and darkness is what makes him so compatible with shadow and tokoyami because they are the definition of dual nature.

(Speaking of dual natured, todoroki was a close second for this ask, maybe I will write about him some other time)

Honestly I wish I could tell you all the reasons Midoriya likes tokoyami and dark shadow but that would turn into a complete mumble storm. He could go on and ON about how funny and cool and amazing they are. In fact since tokoyami is so secretive Midoriya keeps all his notes on them in a separate journal, and there are a LOT of notes. From personality traits to possible special moves mido is completely facinated by these little birds.

As far as hang outs go dark shadow loves to sneak over to his room in the middle of the night when they know he’s awake. They are both chatty so from hero’s to quirk specifics they never really run out of things to talk about. It is dark out though so dark shadow can be a little rambunctious. They watch movies or tv shows to calm down. Tokoyami is a better listener than a talker but Midoriya has a way of making people feel comfortable and getting them to open up. He’s willing to tell mido about his interests and even some of his secrets. He’ll talk about the prequirk era, gothic literature, and some of his past and insecurities. Midoriya is also one of the only people tokoyami likes to train with, he prefers to create his special moves in secret but mido is full of good ideas and advice so he helps them. Midoriya finds all of Tokoyami’s little hobbies fascinating too so he is always willing to learn and join in when toko is doing something fun. Sometimes they will sit together and write in their journals while listening to music.

Mido and toko can talk to each other very easily because of their shared issues, they are both good at giving advice and reassuring others. They might not interact a lot but their friendship is strong.
