Dean at the end of 9x13 saying Sam would do the same for him (getting an angel to heal him under false pretenses, lying to him about it) if the circumstances were the same, and Sam saying he wouldn't... back when it aired, I thought Sam was being unduly harsh, that he absolutely would, like just look at how much they've always sacrificed for one another. upon rewatching years later, though, I realize Sam's telling the truth. he wouldn't infect Dean with an angel to heal him. no, our boy would go off the rails. if Dean had been the one going through the trials, and they almost killed him, and he was lying there in a coma he might never wake up from, ready to die because he failed... Sam would spiral into a cold, calculating madness so deep and merciless there might not be anything left of who he used to be by the time Dean woke up. by the time they're getting ready to attempt the trials he's been plagued by Hallucifer for over a year, and then when Dean got back from Purgatory Sam accidentally proved to himself that the only relationship he can ever have is with his brother. he's got nothing left to lose but Dean. historically we've seen that he turns himself into something unrecognizable just to save Dean, every time, and this time would be the worst. so I think he realizes that, and says no, I wouldn't with such bare honesty because no, Dean, what I'd do would be so much worse.

not to watch one scene of television over and over for the rest of time, but i love how dean in the barn scene doesn’t say “i love you so much, my baby brother” he says “i love you so much. my baby brother…” in that tone…. almost wonderingly, like he’s almost in awe of how much he loves this one person, this lil blanketed bundle that came into his life at four years old and look at what they became and what they began to mean to one another in all these intervening years. at the man sam became and how proud he is of everything he is after everything he endured, that’s my baby brother. idk why this is the comparison point in my mind rn but it’s like that siken line that goes “the enormity of my desire disgusts me” but the exact polar opposite, the purity and profundity of his love for sam enraptures him, beatifies him, in that moment and it’s all wrapped up in that my baby brother. i’m gonna need a moment to collect myself

i’m sorry i’ve been silent long enough and must finally speak my truth. there is no way. NO WAY. that dean is a top. because like??? think about it. dean is absolutely PETRIFIED that HE did this to sam. that somewhere along the way he implied something or unwittingly manipulated sam during his most impressionable years. he thinks sam wants this because sam thinks it’s what DEAN wants and is just giving it to him to appease him. dean never ever EVER would’ve acted on any of his feelings for those very reasons, and the only reason anything ever ended up happening between them was because sam initiated it. and sam insists over and over and over that HE wants it, that it was nothing dean did, it would’ve always happened, couldn’t be helped. but dean never quite believes him and so while he gives in (because of course he does, he was never going to be able to resist, he’s pathetic and sick and so full of longing it makes him crazy) he always has to be the one taking it. the idea of doing anything to sam is too much for him to bear. like there’s literally no way a scared little man with THAT much guilt could ever be dominant over sam. just no way. take me TO COURT over it. i will win
