Hi there!

I think he’s the misunderstood messiah of Dark Souls actually!!

Fantastic boss, worthy opponent as he’s a nobody human like the player, but that’s the point!

I have a post planned on this some day, but what Gael did by consuming fragments of the Dark Soul until he basically…became It and thus the epitome of mankind and all their Darkness is a very Biblical, Christlike sacrifice, in my opinion.

Here’s why I think that, and please keep in mind this is my interpretation! I could be wrong, but I do suspect I have some decent evidence!

Gael spent ages gathering fragments of the Dark Soul, but what I specifically think he was doing was consuming, drinking the blood of humans. That’s how he absorbed their souls. I say this because of the connection DS3 seems to establish between Blood and Soul, which is an ancient association.

Look here in the book of Leviticus in the Bible:

God commands his people to not eat blood, because the life of the flesh is in the blood. It’s like consuming the life of a creature.

This isn’t the only place where this idea is shared of course, but it maybe paints a picture of how old it is. The blood being the life and therefore also the soul is something I think humanity has always perceived.

(Remember how it’s even referenced in Dracula when Renfield cries out his famous line, “The life is the blood and it shall be mine!” I have always interpreted that line to mean roughly the same thing, hence emphasizing the blasphemous existence of vampires).

Gael commits the grave sin of consuming the blood/life force of many, and eventually he becomes them—their darkness, which allows for us to put him down and take his blood. His blood was pure humanity right then. It was a grand sacrifice, whether Gael knew it or not. When we take his Dark Soul (blood) to the Painter, she can paint a dark and gentle world that won’t rot. It’s mankind’s new domain and haven, made up purely of their soul.

It’s as if, in the weirdest possible way, mankind was saved in the end. I think the Painter knew the secret to painting a world that wouldn’t rot and Gael was by her side for that reason. He knew what they had to do, and he gathered up the souls of mankind until he became an amalgamation and representation of all of them. I believe that’s why he also mirrors us directly. It all falls into place.

Dark Souls does have a bittersweet ending. The world is ruined ultimately, but a new one made up of pure humanity is being painted at the end. Man suffered in a world fractured by gods until the bitter end, but it wasn’t all for nothing in a small way. Gael played a huge part in that. He became the worst of humanity to save them.
