Was Jellal brainwashed or simply manipulated? (Chapter 102)

Seems like there’s some disagreement over whether Ultear manipulated or brainwashed Jellal, so here are the manga panels in question to clarify this:

Brainwashing is specifically mentioned in both the English scanlation and official translation, and the Chinese scanlations (not shown here) agree with that as well. It’s the same in the raws - 洗脳 is used, which translates to brainwash. If the intention was to mean manipulate, 操る would have been used instead.

I understand that the Fairy Tail wiki uses “manipulate”, and there are a number of people out there who describe Ultear as having manipulated Jellal as well. Perhaps this in part depends on how you define both words? The choice of word used here is important though, because it affects our understanding of Jellal as a character.

Here’s the definitions of both words from Google for reference:

Manipulate: control or influence (a person or situation) cleverly or unscrupulously.

Brainwash: pressurize (someone) into adopting radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible means.

My understanding is that someone who has been manipulated is only wrongly influenced by others in some matters, but has his own opinions in other matters. He’s still in control of his actions. On the other hand, someone who has been brainwashed no longer has his own opinions. Brainwashing is also something that’s usually done over a longer period of time.

Assuming that Jellal was only manipulated by Ultear raises the question of what exactly Ultear manipulated him to believe, what she manipulated him to do, as well as what are the things that Jellal had done as a result of Ultear’s manipulation. And based on what’s written above, it implies that Jellal was perfectly aware of, and wanted to do some of the evil deeds that he committed in the past (note that the Jellal we saw at the Tower of Heaven didn’t appear to have any trace of goodness in him). That seems to contradict with how Jellal was portrayed when he was still a child - someone who never lost faith at the thought be being free; someone who protected Erza by taking punishment in her place; someone who was kind; and someone whom his friends looked up to as a leader. Jellal as a child never came across to me as someone who was inherently evil, which he has to be, if some of the things he did during his later days at the Tower of Heaven were by his own will.

I believe it’s important to fall back on what is clearly stated in the manga to clarify things like this. 洗脳 was intentionally chosen by Mashima-sensei, and the meaning of the word is a clear-cut “brainwash”. It’s not one of those words like まさか (masaka), where the interpretation is highly dependent on context. Unless there are other instances in the manga that clearly prove otherwise, I believe that Jellal was brainwashed by Ultear, and not simply manipulated. Feel free to disagree with me though, I’d love to hear reasons as to why others feel that Jellal was only being manipulated. Mature, friendly discussions are always welcome.

Jellal Fernandes: Hogwarts AU

Jellal Fernandes is a Half-Blood (believed Muggleborn) wizard that was born on the 5th of January 1978 and started attending Hogwarts on the 1st of September 1989, being sorted into Ravenclaw house.

His mother Esmeralda abandoned him at a muggle orphanage right before she was killed by Death Eaters, causing him to grow up without knowledge of magic.

He and a few other orphans were eventually kidnapped to be used as slaves to Purebloods due to their Muggleborn status but when they discovered that he was actually a Half-Blood, they put him under the Imperius Curse to raise him as a Death Eater.

When they started attending Hogwarts, he manipulated the other orphans to think that Erza had betrayed them which worked on the younger ones but his best friend Simon didn't believe him and still had complete faith in Erza.

He was eventually forced to take on the Death Eater Mark in his sixth year by his adopted parents and started working for Zeref during the Second Wizarding War during which he actually killed Simon.

Simon's younger sister Kagura wanted to kill him in revenge for it but when she realized that he actually was under the Imperius Curse, she reluctantly forgave him.

But he eventually broke out of the Imperius Curse and went into hiding with Ultear Milkovich and her daughter Meredy under the protection of the Order of the Phoenix.

He eventually participated in the Battle of Hogwarts which he survived but he, Meredy and a few others were later forced to go on the run since the Ministry of Magic didn't believe their claims that they were under the Imperius Curse.

Jellal was even declared to get the Dementor's Kiss if he was ever caught, which horrified Meredy while Jellal accepted it due to his grief over the apparent death of Erza.

He was eventually pardoned for his crimes, along with Meredy, around the time that Erza and the others returned after seven years with the two eventually entering a romantic relationship together.

After meeting his grandfather for the first time, he started working for the Ministry of Magic, married Erza and had two children with her.

He has a Beech wand with a Unicorn Hair Core.

His Patronus is a Dalmatians.

His favorite subjects are Charms and History of Magic.

His least favorite subjects are Potions and Herbology.

First, you have all the right to not like them, I dont have a problem with that, people is free to like or dislike whatever they like, its really fine, so I am just going go add some facts to clarify your doubt, bc you asked that and bc your stament of " Jellal didnt love her until the end or from nowhere" is not truth.

Second: Mashima sensei has stated that they are in love with each other, he says that in his YouTube video of Jerza Day, nd we he drew their son, Justin in YouTube and in other chat spaces on twitter.

Third: The magazine specials had info about the "love situation" of the characters, Erza's love situation fragment is about Jellal and Jellal love situation fragment is Erza.

Fourth: Several character have statet that they love each other, like Lucy, Richard and Ultear and they are constantly teased about those feelings, even Minerva and the whole sabertooth teased Jellal about his feelings for Erza, also Laxus, Charle and Happy had done it.

Fifth: About the proves of Jellal loving Erza since the beggining:

Jellal has being in live with Jerza since childhood, that's why he went to save her to the prison when the slavers took her, even in TOH Jellal tells her he loved her (a part that the anime didnt include), that's why he took her place inside the lacryma when its about to explode and the reason she didnt die, that's why her name is the only one he remembers on Nirvana and that name feels "bright and gentle and warm" to him (his exact words) that's why he was ready to k1ll himself to save her from the hate in her heart, that's why he saids "your words are the light that gave me courage", that's why his voice reach to her on Tenrou Island even if he is in a antimagical prison (bc the strongest magic in FT is love so bc of his love for her she could her his words and she stands up to fight again Azuma) that's why he offers her life again to her after the Tenrou Island 7 years gap, that's why he stop the kiss bc he didnt want to take advantage of her emotional distress, that's why de lied about the fiance, bc he has nothing to offer her and he think he doest deserve so he loves her so much that doesnt chained her to him, instead he leaves his feelings aside for her sake and only wishes her happiness, thats why he clearly says to Ultear and Meredy that he lied bc "Crime Sorciere rule prohibits to fall in love from people of the light" clearly he is stating that he loves her but he shouldnt. After Tartatos, he show his love looking for her and giving her words so she cant stop shaking, even Richard that what Jellal said was bc of love, the reason he gets all mad against Neinhart is bc he hurted the person he loved, that's why in his battle versus August he call Erza " The light of my heart", that's why he faces Acno bc in his words" "If i am able to pushing him to the gate I will be able to protect Erza" and then in the sequel he said again that Erza is "His scarlet light in his heart" and is the one he tells "Im free to love people" while hugging her and she hugging him back. There is A LOT of proves that Jellal has loved Erza since the beggining. The only reason they are not together yet is bc Jellal doesnt feel worthy of her, that's all, he loves her too much that he feels he doesnt deserve her.

But now that he is joining Fairy Tail, they will finally give the final step together.

Again, its fine if you don like them, but its way to different "I dont like them" and "They dont love each other" the first is a stament of you VALID feelings and taste, the second is wrong missinformation that goes against the canon facts.

Fairy Tail fans, I have a question: Why is Jerza a good ship?

I've seen the entire show and I can't see why they're perfect for each other. Can someone explain pls?

We ship Jerza bc it perfectly shows a balance between a male and a female being for each other in good and bad, bc this is not only about a woman being save by a man, but also a wlman saving a man. This about Jellal, a kid who saw her mother killed in front of him by a dark cult, take as a slave and being force to work and being physically and mentally abuse for years, but even so, he never lose hope, he became the protector of the other childs, and in the case of Erza, he became someone to look up to, then Erza is taken to torture for something she didnt do, the slavers put her eye just for fun, and Jellal was the only one that came for her recue, the one that cried in horror when he saw ehat they did to an innocent child. But then he is captured instead of her, punished, beaten, tortured for days and then he gets magically brainwash and magical manipulated by using the hate he had in his heart against the slavers. The things people blame Jellal, was not on his own will, he was magically manipulated by Ultear (who has admitted many times on canon) and she has the back up of Hades and Brain (to powerful and skillful mages) Then Erza tries to save him, but its late, he is under the control of powerful people and she doesnt even know that, she its expelled from the island, with thw broken hurt for not being able to save the person that save her. And that is just the beggining of tgeir tragic story, when they are getting closer something bigger pull them apart, even if theire feelings are pure, the world doesnt allow them to live according to them.

No matter how many people like to blame Jellal, he is a victim of a religion cults and slavers, of magic brainwash and manipulation, a victim of Grimmoire Heart big plan in ordwe to distract the all too powerful magic council, he was a tool, a toy and a scape goat, a child alone in the world selected by luck to be a piece on a mere game between light and dark.

Erza realized this in Nirvana, when sees him again, and she doesnt sugar coat to him the things that happened in the tower, and then, the real Jellal cries, unable to believe he hurt his friends, and even so he doesnt remembers and even so he is not actually guilty, he takes responsability, he decided to carry thosw sins, and he tries to free Erza from himself, but Erza tells him that dying will not fix nothing, that he has to keep living and atone for those sins and see the future with his own eyes, she doesnt just forgive and forget and "oh my poor baby". No. She tells him to keep living and atone and he doesnt feels bad bc she tells him that, he takes those words in his heart "words that became his light" and decides to live and atone for the crimes he actually didnt do.

Then he is taking to prison, Erza doesnt want too but she is the one that makes Team Natsu and Co stop fighting with ghe rune knights, he heart is breaking but she knows is the right thing to do in that moment (that's when the Jedza is SasuSaku becomes more and more like and idiotic comparison) Erza is not a simp, she acts with logic, justice, and Jellal is the same, he accepts his destiny into prison with a smile, and dont blames anyone, but all the contrary, he is grateful Erza stop them, he is grateful with everyone.

Then he is the voice that makes Erza stand uo against Azuma in Tenrou Island, he is the one that even in a antimagical prison, underground, tortured, without food or water, he still feels she is in danger and he is able to get his voice to her, and even while receiving the electrical discharges by Nadal, he only worries about her, and she hears him & stand up, and wins and he, in the dirty floor of this antimagical prison, he smiles, bc she is safe. Then is when Azuma tells Erza that Jellal was controlled by Ultear bc of plan she had with Hades, and now she totally understand he was only a tragic victim.

Then, Ultear & Meredy take him from prison, he has his memories from TOH again and he feels nothing but guilt, even so the one who controlled him with magic was Ultear, but he decided to take those sins in his shoulders and created Crime Sorciere in order to defeat the dark gilds and darkness in general and protect the innocents from the nasty stuff he lived (his mother getting kill by a dark cult, slavery, torture).

After 7 years of working to protect people and atoning for the sins he didnt did, he re encounters with his most important person, people get mad bc of the "Im a fiance" lie, but they are unable to see that he did that bc he felt he was taking advantage of Erza's turmoil of feelings, bc she is there crying, bc shw thought she will never seeing him again, bc she now knows the true about the magical manipulation and brain control, and she has all these feelings in her, and he realized that us totally wrong to kiss her, to confuses her more, is totally wrong bc she is not in a good emotional stated, but also, bc Crime Sorciere rule was to never fall in love with the people that walks in the light, bc he doesnt deserve her, but for him Erza do deserves to be love by someone who is able to bring her happines, and he loves her so much that he decides he is not going to confuse her heart, bc he believes in freedom and Erza's heart should be free for someone able to make her happy, someone that is not a runaway convict that could bring problems to her and her family/friends, someone free to love her and able to offer her something more than sadness... he has a heart so beautifuo and his love for her is so pure that he will be happy as long she is happy, even is that means that someone else becomes Erza's partner. Those are the word he tells to Ultear and Meredy, that is why he lied, to protected her.

And then we see how the start again as friends, protecting each other, inspiring each others, whishing, hoping, dreaming about more but never trying to force the other, they never push each other, they respect their boundaries ans times to heal, they are safe around each other, they are confidence around each other. They both give words that fill them with courage, like when Erza was shaking after what happened with Kyoka and he was the one to look for her and gave her the words that make her stop shaking, the one who was there when she was giving up against the mini dragons, the one that make the day sky a night sky bc someone hurt her, the one who ones to stand up in order to protect her, the one that will face the most dangerous dragon bc that way he will be able to protect her. The one that even after 10 years, he keeps atoning the sins that were not his, and Erza is there, supporting his steps, even if those steps will never bring him to her.

But destiny can be cruel, but also is kind, bc now he and CS got the royal pardon, and now he ia free to love & even so he still wants to live his life protecting people from darkness, he now will bring that way of life close to her, he is joining FT, they will walk the same path. Now their hearts are able to stay close, and maybe with a bit more time, the love the clearly have since childhood will blossom as it should.

Their story is about tragic, about how humans can overcome the most awful situations, about the love that let the other heal, that dont push, that keeos them together even if they are far apart, about the love that bring the light and the best of each other. About how love will always win.

I understand is not a pairing that can be for everyone, I understand that people dont like them, but it is really sad to read people bashing them without even understand them.
