UP AHEAD: so much rambling about Orange. written very late at night and not the most coherent, sorry. (also, all uses of Thomas are referring to c!Thomas)
okay everyone talks about the dark sides being their opposites, opposing colors, colors on opposite ends of the wheel, but wanna know another term for it? complementary colors. I think the idea of "totally opposing, entirely contrasting, nothing alike" is not really accurate to the lore that we have been given? It's clear that it's important that all sides are accepted, and that there is no "solely good" or "solely bad" trait. Everything has complexities and different aspects to it, and the sides are no different.
I've never been particularly fond of the idea of wrath/anger/cruelty being orange because it seems like a scapegoat? I am more in favor of it representing regret (as most appearances of it are present in scenes or conversations with regret present) [forgot where i saw the theory first :sob:] and passion (impulsive acts based in emotions, a contrast to Logan's character while simultaneously rounding him out and forcing him and thomas to accept the parts that aren't all logical) [theory from @/dillydallydove] as these have more dimension and seem to fill out the gaps in the sides a bit more, especially considering the general theme going with remus, janus, and virgil. These are aspects that Thomas represses, and he knows them by names that aren't really accurate to their full purposes. He knows Janus as deceit, while he is more accurately described as self-preservation. He knows Remus as intrusive thoughts, when he is more accurately described as his repressed creativity. He knows Virgil as Anxiety (which is fairly accurate, though it still minimizes his functions) though he might be more accurately described as caution? fear? an aspect of self preservation? Regardless, perhaps orange could be known as wrath or anger because that's what he manifests as, but that doesn't mean that this is accurate to who he is as an aspect of Thomas. Remus is intrusive thoughts because that is the only way he can get recognized, the only way he breaks through the suppression. Janus is known as deceit because he has to manipulate the other sides to get them to prioritize Thomas's self-interest (as well as his personal responsibility to protect Thomas from what he can't handle at the moment; deceiving himself, sure, but at it's core, preserving his presently fragile mental state).
What emotion, what passion, does thomas repress the most? he's clearly open to expressing love and joy and, more recently, stress and anxiety, even some hints of sadness showing. but what has he been repressing the most? his anger! his frustration! his (and his sides') sense of inadequacy!! Orange is being seen in these contexts because that is what he isn't allowing himself (and the sides) to express as themselves.
Sanders Sides' whole thing is accepting the different parts of yourself, with underlying themes of c!thomas's upbringing causing him to repress, deny, or otherwise have an unhealthy relationship with "bad" aspects of himself (which, boy do i have some ideas for possible explorations of OCD in this, especially with the prevalence of intrusive thoughts- and the ways Thomas and the other sides change their language around Remus to prevent him from "getting ideas"-). Orange could be treated as a character foil to Logan, or Orange could be like Janus, but instead of protecting c!T from things he can't handle, Orange is the result of that suppression. Like how remus formed from thomas (patton) forbidding Roman from having "bad" ideas, orange could be formed from thomas (logan) pushing down "bad" feelings, feelings of passion that don't directly help other people.
Of course, this brings me to how Janus (a "gatekeeper" of sorts for Thomas) would interact with orange. this is reaching more into prediction territory. I suspect that Janus wants orange to emerge, as prolonged repression is harming Thomas (which i'm pretty sure he alluded to at least once, though i'm blanking on when). (also, an aside, is it not concerning that during the christmas special, Janus, c!T's self-preservation, was increasingly inebriated?? ooh and the occasional gags about Logan drinking wine too-) Notice how Janus has been watching Logan? this plus the general willingness to exclude Logan (further pushing his frustration and feelings of inadequacy) makes me suspect that he (as per usual) knows more than the rest.
I... don't really have a conclusion. I think Orange isn't an embodiment of aggression, moreso a result of repression? I guess? And I'm concerned about... yeah everyone involved, but especially Logan and Janus.

URGENT: Bail funds needed for a Filipino, student victim-survivor's bail fund!
Tumblr media
[caption copy-pasted from Enough is Enough, a youth organization of sexual abuse victim-survivors fighting for gender equality in campuses]
HELP US FREE ALIAS ROBERT! Donate to the bail fund via GCash: 0927 650 9197 and mention it is for Robert's bail fund.
Who is alias Robert?
In August 2022, he was among the whistleblowers of sexual harassment issues in Bacoor National High School It was after a conversation between two teachers who were 'prying on good-looking students' during the enrollment season circulated online. Many more victims also came forward and shared their stories of abuse and harassment at the hands of teachers from BNHS.
Last April 5, he was arrested on four charges of cyber-libel from four predator teachers in BNHS. Alias Robert has yet to find justice for the abuse he faced in school, and now he is wrongfully incarcerated while the real criminals – the predator teachers – remain free and unprosecuted.
What happened in Bacoor National High School?
Longstanding sexual harassment issues in BNHS ranged from grooming, unsolicited remarks, harassment, etc. The whistleblowers were alumni of the school, given the power dynamics and fear of retaliation from their teachers, it was only after they had left or graduated from school that the victims found the courage to share their stories of abuse.
According to our monitoring, there are no less than 11 predators in BNHS. However, the Department of Education has only filed administrative cases against 5 predators. A few months after the filing of cases, one of the accused predators was reportedly seen on the BNHS campus.
What does his incarceration mean?
Time and time again, cyber-libel is used to repress victims’ efforts for justice and safer spaces. Alias Robert’s case marks a grave threat to all victim-survivors and the collective effort against campus predators. It sends out a message that victim-survivors who come forward with their truth will be punished and suppressed.
But this is not the time to cower into submission. All the more, victims and advocates alike must overcome all odds, including the weaponization of the Cybercrime law, in the pursuit of justice and safer campuses.

I’m curious to know, when you say Remus’s function serves like an alarm clock, do you think Remus is aware of/intentionally fulfilling that role? Because I have always interpreted it as, from his perspective, his role is simply to be c!Thomas’s creativity the same way Roman is. His version of creativity is just rejected by c!Thomas and the other sides (often for good reason, but sometimes not). Even though his ideas are sometimes dangerous or unrealistic, the role of creativity isn’t always to do everything that pops into your head. Roman has unrealistic ideas as well but because they’re not as upsetting to c!Thomas, they’re seen as fanciful rather than totally forbidden. A lot of what Remus wants is just for c!Thomas to censor himself less and explore darker, more mature themes in his art. Idk about him representing ‘repressed truths’ since intrusive thoughts are by definition not rooted in realistic conclusions or in what the individual actually wants. I def see what you mean about Remus serving as an alarm for Thomas’s mental state, especially in WTIT, but idk if I see Remus’s intentions in WTIT as being that complex and altruistic. Especially since he’s genuinely upset whenever c!Thomas and Logan ignore or defeat his creative inventions. (Also sorry if any of this comes off as confrontational, I genuinely love reading your analyses and I’m just curious to hear your perspective more!)
hello! no worries btw, idt this is confrontational at all! i find it to be an interesting point of discussion :3
the reason i entertain the idea of remus being repressed truths (or thoughts in general) is because i acknowledge remus is a faulty representation of intrusive thoughts, in a meta level. this episode was created before major discussions of what intrusive thoughts really means blew up on tiktok. even by how remus is executed as a character, it is clear to a lot of us that what he suggests isn't Just intrusive thoughts. rather he's a mix of that and impulsivity!
but for me, remus Has to be aware of and Cares for his role as a side of thomas. i expounded it more in my extensive orange side theory, but to reiterate: the baseline need of the dark sides is to get listened to, but because thomas has very bad black-and-white thinking, it's almost required that they be meticulous with their plan execution. in this case, remus kinda Has to get along to get what he ultimately wants: to be listened to.
i generally think all sides do things in the interests of thomas and themselves. i don't think it can be divorced from each other actually— their entire foundation of existence begins with their roles in connection to thomas.
it is still. a very open question to ask though about how does remus actually want to give back to thomas. when i say he's an alarm clock, i say that he's hyperaware of thomas and the sides' struggles and his presence means you should probably do sometjing about it. but then we don't actually know if the end goal is if he wants thomas to get better by acknowledging the intrusive thoughts and winding down, OR if thomas should truly follow through with these thoughts.
there's a lot of mystery when it comes to remus and his true intent. all i can say is that he does want the best for thomas in a way only remus sees fit. you asked if he was aware of his role outside of creativity and for me, yeah! i think there's too much scenes for insecurity callouts to the other sides for remus to be unaware of his role :3 man knows all your secrets! all kept hidden!

Hehe, I did say I'm pedantic. Feel free to ignore my quibbling over specific wording. I just have a thing where I always want to use the Most Correct word.
I've actually read your Orange essay! It gave me a lot of interesting thoughts. My current theory for Orange' attribution would be something along the lines of "resentment" (both because a "colder" emotion seems fitting for how much he's suppressed, and because something hatred related seems like a good name for the "final boss" of the sides, as it's even more demonized than anger) but I 100% agree that his domain is over all those forbidden emotions + assertiveness (as all of those are conspiciously missing in the other sides' domains). I've definitely adopted calling Orange an externalizing force from that essay tho :P
Tho I do disagree with some of the other theories there, such as how Thomas going to therapy is the endgame solution of the series (the entire premise of the series is Thomas working through his issues, going to therapy would be the same thing but just have it all happen off screen. I can see at most that the sides mention stuff they learned in therapy during the discussions, but Logan (and Janus sometimes) already give the necessary exposition about these kind of things so Thomas going to therapy won't really add anything to the story), or how the "dark" sides have a big plan going from the first appearances of Janus and Virgil (in clbg Janus was still very much in the "what you don't know can't hurt you" mindset and it's only in svs that he shifted into something that wants Thomas to be aware of all of himself. It seems to me like Logan's speech in clbg about how knowledge is the most powerful weapon indicated to Janus that on some level Thomas did want to know those things and so he was ready to learn about them, which is what made him shift tracks and align his goals more with Remus to try and "release" Orange).
HI HELLO SORRY IM LATE BUT IM HERE NOW
at the end of the day, for me, as long as a theory abides by "orange is an externalizing force" then i'm fully on board. love the idea of resentment, kind of gives of an idea that there are things that impacted thomas so gravely it created a side to hold that
but on the second— that is a perspective i genuinely really like. the fact that logan's statement in clbg could allude to the true ending of sasi makes a LOT of sense actually. because while therapy does a lot of help, the true problem-fixer when it comes to thomas' issues is to fix his foundation of beliefs. not in a sense that he's Wrong, but rather reshape his principles to abandon ones he inherited from toxic upbringing. i genuinely do prefer that ending more than the therapy one
