I wish everyone would admit that classic literature is inherently difficult to read, and that you shouldn’t feel stupid if you don’t “get it”. Especially the dark academia/ classic lit fandoms and stuff. Like unless you have the vocabulary and pop culture knowledge of an 18th century nobleman, it’s going to be a tough read. It’ll take you longer to read; you’re not stupid if you’ve spent several months on a single book! And you don’t have to enjoy everything. It’s okay if you got bored after one chapter of Wuthering Heights, and couldn’t be bothered to read the rest. It’s okay if you want to read your favourite kids book for the 10th time instead. You’re not stupid. No piece of literature is inherently better, more “important”, more “meaningful”, or more “intellectual” than another. First and foremost, read what brings you joy.

wild how mothers teach daughters that part of expressing girlhood correctly is to have “crushes” on boys and then girls enforce that expectation on each other, leading to sleepovers where girls are just playing a guessing game of what boy they’re supposed to have a crush on like “uhhh.. this one is okay, I guess this is what attraction is??” and this just continues in various degrees of complexity and forcefulness indefinitely until girls who never actually experienced attraction to boys are finally like “wait I don’t have to do this anymore, thank god”

brecht having creon say "you do not see the divine law of the state" and antigone respond "it might be divine, but i would rather it be human"...... it both completely overturns the sophoclean message and faithfully adapts it to the contemporary sensibility

Reading so much Marlowe has led me to the great fact that “minion” is a borrowing from the French endearment mignon, and in its original usage referred to a king’s (often gay male) lover, and that makes every modern usage of the term (especially in superhero genres) 100% Better

hey did you know that you can believe “literary scholars DO read older texts critically and are aware of the bigotry in those texts” and “jewish/black/lgbt/etc. teenagers are allowed to be upset that every book their english teacher assigns seems to be written by an old dead white dude who hates them” at the same time? empathy and critical thinking are the spices of life.

Hands down the best gag in derry girls is the fact that every time someone gives james shit all his friends and family jump to his defense because "it's not because he's gay is it??" and every single time the response is "no of course not it's because he's english" and they all do a full 180 and go "oh yeah fair enough we hate him for that too"

i think what’s getting me most about this movie other than all the other changes is that lowery flipped gawain inside out. in the poem gawain is a man who wants to live honorably, who is trying to do the right thing in order to feel like he belongs at court, who refuses the lady’s advances, who respects lord bertilak as a host and agrees to his game, but who ultimately does not reveal the sash to the green knight. he fails to live up to his principles because his fear of death is stronger than his desire to be honorable.
dev patel’s gawain is not interested in honor: he sleeps with a prostitute but refuses to be with her legitimately, he is reluctant to help a dead girl out of goodwill, he gives in to the lady, he won’t play the game with bertilak. he isn’t looking for moral goodness in order to feel like he has earned a place at court, he wants notoriety— a story that will become legend. but he gives up the sash in the final moment, because he realizes that honor is worth more than his fear of death.
