This comic is discontinued.
I think everyone's seen this coming now. >.>"
Sorry for trying to draw it out so long. I did try, and I wasn't pretending to salvage this comic... but let's say I've done a LOT of missteps that ruined the experience for me.
I'll put the longer stuff under read more, but the basic is: I'm sorry that it had to come to this. You may shoot some asks if you wanna know the rest of the story, or what my thoughts are, or anything else, really! And if you're disappointed, I understand. I am, too. But I think it's best to put the pencil down for this project.
Thank you to those who were waiting. ;o;
The story I planned for this comic was pretty big, and it was my pride for a long, long time. I even had a whole google docs at 23 pages worldbuilding for this comic! But it seems like despite all I try, it still didn't work out for me.
The basics are these:
I am not a person who can focus on a huge project for too long. It feels like a chore eventually and my motivation for it dies. I needed a handbook to hold onto, and I didn't have it! Because I didn't plan the story through!! So if you're like me who keeps jumping projects, maybe limiting yourself to a shorter, simpler story and writing everything down in text format BEFORE turning it into a comic will work wonders.
I discussed it with too many people... Now, having friends isn't bad, and sharing work with your friends isn't bad, either! The problem is, as I said above, I DIDN'T have a strong grip on the story and kept asking people to 'help figure things out with me'. This really muddies my story and overtime, I forget my true intent for it... which pushed me away from the story altogether.
I. STARTED. TOO. BIG. Despite my weaknesses, I chomped down on it because I thought I could do it. I got way too eager, way too greedy, and without pacing myself properly I just shot myself at the foot and lost steam early in the race.
Please note that this only works for me. I am someone with massive focus issues, a full-time job, and other real-life stresses, and I cannot hold the weight of this story over time. So don't be discouraged if you are planning on making your own comic. Just be prepared and try things out before you jump into it.
Pilot comics are always good. Yes. Please do that.
Thank you! Really. For still waiting all this time. I appreciate all of you, and I'm sorry for all of this. I hope the comic was fun while it lasted. As I said, if you have questions or need advice, please ask away! (I won't answer complaints because, sadly, it bogs me down. I'm also unhappy with my own decision! ; ;)
(The good news is I am using this energy to make another comic, but you will see that in +6 years once I ACTUALLY finalize and plan the story down.)

There is often a saying told between miners:
"To look into the darkness is to look upon death itself.”
Like all field divisions, the miners of Search and Rescue eat danger and breathe hazard on the daily. Complications and close encounters with death were no secret; every rescuer knew of this. Surrounded by darkness fifty blocks under the surface, death may be one misstep away, just beyond the comforting light of a burning torch or a lit headlamp.     Any miner would steel their gaze, take a deep breath, and face death.
Jayden, on the other hand, shut her eyes,
    and began counting.
Tumblr media
Numbers do not lie; Jayden loved them for that alone. Good and bad, safe and unsafe, all can be measured by numbers and formulas. Hence, she would turn to numbers when there was nothing else to rely on. She counted probabilities every ten, sometimes five minutes. She compared rights and wrongs, and whether or not the rights can undo the wrongs. She counted that the corridor they were in 84 seconds ago was six blocks tall and five blocks wide. She could be sure that they are traveling at the speed of 12 bl/h. She remembered the time of day they started the mission so she could sneak in some rations in case she got hungry.
Most importantly: counting increased the probability of avoiding a calamity.
Situations always start off with tiny mistakes, after all. Mismatched numbers, uneven surfaces, poor luck, and other forms of constants and variables and what-have-yous that wouldn’t hurt anyone, let alone a fly… Until those little mistakes snowball, coagulate, and merge together.
Suddenly a myriad of harmless inconveniences becomes a situation, and a situation snowballs into calamity. And then people panic because they didn’t ‘think it through’... and end up carted off in a funeral chest.
So Jayden told herself that she couldn’t panic. She simply couldn’t afford to. It would be all over if she did. She was a woman of formulas and step-by-step calculations. In this team it was Cyl and Brenn’s job to call the shots, Steven’s job to heal, and it was her job to provide data and calculations.
Hence, Jayden closed her eyes and counted.
   That’s what she does best.
   …
Tumblr media
With a gasp and a jerk, Jayden’s hands hastily relocated to the surface of the wall against her back. The numbers in her head quivered, with some falling off a metaphorical chalkboard, flapping uselessly as it glided in metaphorical air and landed upon a metaphorical floor. How many seconds had passed, she tried to remember. 112… 128… something around two minutes? How far... How long has she been counting, anyway?
In a spark of realization, the engineer’s gloved fingers quickly patted around her thigh to make sure it was still there: The radio, hanging against her belt by an orange carabiner. The headset yanking off of her didn’t matter as long as the radio stayed safe… and the feeling of cold, metallic surface against her clammy finger brought much relief to her psyche.
Thank Jeb. She wouldn’t know what to do if she lost it.
She noticed Krafften wordlessly returned his gaze towards the moving contraptions. She hoped he did not feel how heavily her chest heaved nor see the shame burning against her cheeks as she took the opportunity to carefully secure the radio. She has a job to accomplish.
All they need to do is to find the missing people. Then, everyone gets to go home.
The problem right now, really, is who she happened to be paired with.
Tumblr media
…Stephanus Krafften. A walking taboo and man dubbed one of the least trustworthy persons across the entirety of Kravtaheim. God knows why Brenn decided to keep him with all the resentment she could sense from him. All he contributed to Division SE14 so far was just the smell of sadness, cigarette smoke, and (mostly) obsolete knowledge. He was just a ghost, a remnant of his glory days. He might even be harmless now…
That didn’t stop the painful gossip and whispers she heard about Brenn in the mess hall, though.
All Jayden Xiao could do was to make him none of her business. Brenn and Cyl, surely, have enough on their plates. She respected her seniors’ decisions and Steven’s positive attitude towards this person (no matter how mind-boggling that was). This man hadn’t personally given her grief either; she had nobody in the Mining Department she lost, nor was she in the Mining Department when the incident happened.
However, the fact stayed that this man was not someone who could easily earn someone’s trust.
…Then again, as long as she causes no trouble nor starts a fight with the most infamous man of the Mining Department, things would be fine.
Tumblr media
     …right?
      …
    ……
   “...Pardon—”
   “EEP!”
A surprise to both parties. Jayden looked up in disbelief, right into the wide eyed stare of the startled older man. Quickly, her surprise changed to irritation, her brows furrowing.
“What? What?? I’m thinking!” She hissed.
“I… apologize for startling you.” Krafften quickly responded, raising his free hand up in surrender. Behind him, another room-sized section of the dungeon zoomed past. The grinding sound it made left a ringing sensation in her ears. “It- it’s just that… you’re really quiet, miss. I know things aren’t… looking up right now, but I assure you, things are going to be alright.”
“...’Alright’?” Jayden exclaimed with a gaped mouth. “‘Alright’??”
Her gloved hands patted against her chest.
“We almost got p-pancaked two minutes ago! How is that ‘alright’?!”
All the woman got was an unchanging, blank expression. It made her a little angrier, not going to lie.
Wait! Wait, let’s calm down now, J, she internally told herself. Maybe it’s not such a good idea to pick a fight with a larger man who can clearly push her off this tiny, 0.46bl ledge with a flick of his arm. Shaking her head and pinching the bridge of her nose, she looked up towards him once more. She felt calmer now, and his blank facial expression remained the same.
“What do we do?” She asked. “We’re stuck on a moving contraption over here at the mercy of a dungeon’s mechanic for- for how long exactly? It won’t happen forever, right?”
“...As far as I know, shuffles have different times ranging from five to ten minutes.” Krafften muttered, averting his gaze. “The bigger they are, of course, the longer it takes to shuffle.”
“So we have eight minutes remaining, give or take. If we’re lucky…” She muttered. That’s 480 seconds… 477 now. Do they still have time to find the others? Maybe they can jump on the moving sections. Like ninjas. Didn’t Krafften have a relic that works like a grappling hook? Maybe they can do something about that.
…Actually: No. That sounds mighty silly, and very rash.
She heard Krafften clear his throat behind her. It sounded disgusting, and very phlegm-y. Come to think of it, how many times had he been clearing his throat in the background now. Like… five times?
“We’ve— I’ve been stuck in one of these several times. The safest way to get through this is to press yourself against a wall and ride it out, then… adjust position if we’re on the connecting side before we, you know. Get squished.”
“Wh- you’ve been stuck in one of these several times??” J asked, aghast. And survived? No wonder the man could stand around stone-faced all while she’s over here suffering constant near heart attacks. He’s experienced with these sorts of things all along?
“...Wait. You had experience with this, yet you didn’t bother to tell us this before we got caught up in this mess??”
The engineer chided, one arm spinning and spinning and halted abruptly, gesturing towards the darkness of the dungeon.
“It could’ve saved us all of— of this! Why didn’t you say anything??”
The briefest flash of regret flickered in those purple eyes. As if caught red-handed, his lips parted open to say something… and closed right up. Underneath the judgmental glare of a riled-up engineer, the man eventually rasped, stuttering:
“I-I’m sorry… I didn’t think… I mean, the outer look of a dungeon’s entrance is randomized and doesn't exactly correlate with the actual mechanics of the dungeon itself… a-and… It’s not easy to discern which entrance has what mechanic because of…”
…The incredulous stare Jayden gave him stopped him mid-sentence.
Jayden could’ve sworn she saw Krafften shrinking a little.
“ … Er, I… It was not— I didn’t mean to make excuses—”
Tumblr media
“Why didn’t you say anything when we were still on the surface, then?” She asked, cutting his apology short with furrowed brows. Jayden could taste the venom laced in her every intonation. “I thought you were part of an ace team?”
With the expression he’s giving her, she might as well have asked: Are you trying to get us killed?
“...it… did-didn’t cross my mind… a-at that time.” Stuttered the ghastly man, barely audible. His gaze stuck on the ground, shoulders slouched in shame. “With my experience— I should’ve… considered it more. I’m… I’m sorry.”
…Now this is just sad to look at. Man’s really looked like he’s about to shatter into pieces the next time she looked at him wrong. Jayden began inhaling a deep breath quietly through her nose, and exhaled, slowly. Numbers and formulas began to accrue at the back of her mind, and her shoulders relaxed gradually with each count.   …six… seven… eight. Alright, let’s try again.
“...You know what, don’t— Let’s just drop it, it’s over and done...” Mumbled the young woman. “Tell me what we can do instead. We gotta be ready for what might happen next—”
Tumblr media
And one shriek was all it took.
Like a paint stripper, that single wail replaced all the formulas with nothing but whiteness. Like a mallet to the blackboard, the numbers shattered and scrambled, replacing all of her meticulous calculations with ringing ears and images of her loved ones flashing before her eyes. She could barely feel the fingers digging against her shoulder, keeping her safe from the ledge. She couldn’t take her eyes away from the darkness keeping her away from Steven. From Cylvus. From Brennan.   ‘To look into the darkness is to look upon death itself.’
Tumblr media
If Steven was here now, how blue would she seem to him...?

Hello! here with some updates!
Here’s the bad news first: I will be shutting down the Discord for lack of activity (from my end). I have always been struggling with what to discuss/put there, so I won’t be continuing it even further for now. Maybe in the future I will host a fiction-based server to talk about your favorite fiction elements!
But,
I will be posting more doodle art here to bolster up activity. I am very good at them, and maybe mini doodle comics as well!
I will also try post up some drabbles, but they will not be as much as the doodles.
The purpose of this is to add more side contents when I can. o>
Steven is now officially the poster monkey boii /j
Have a good day!

The two seemed to get their points across. The brine finally stilled in their grip, dejected. Steven did not like being manhandled, but the feeling of gelatin coagulating around his joints was more uncomfortable. Safety’s first, sure... but being unable to move his hands? The... limbs he needed to communicate?
    Come on, now...
“...carry on, Cyl.” Brennan’s voice rang. Steven felt the skeleton’s gauntlets tighten slightly around his chest. He huffed, just a little.
“...yes! Right, uh. Honestly, this is a little more complicated than just avoiding flying, apartment sized slabs of stone.” Cylvus lamented. “Considering there are no notes of the entire top part changing, nobody knew that this how this entire thing works underground. And what- what we’re witnessing right now is when the dungeon is shifting; pried apart and then put back together. Maybe— Maybe it’s time based, or maybe it’s triggered, I don’t know, but— ”
Cyl snapped their fingers together silently, muttering to themselves as they tried to formulate their hypothesis. Their eyes narrowed slightly as another module passed inches away from their noses. It was probably travelling at the speed of a running horse.
“ —the point is: I think this entire dungeon is moving in pieces. Pieces within a larger room than the dungeon itself. L-like a bunch of blocks rebuild and rearranged and then put back together. It’s designed to make people get lost within it — “
Tumblr media
“Your wealth of information and ideas is always—” Brenn’s sentence abruptly interrupted by a deafening grinding of wall against wall just to their left, shaking the entirety of the structure they were hitchhiking on. The skeleton let out an exhale, sharp and rattled, and continued with a heavy sigh. “—greatly appreciated, Cyl. How long does each shuffle usually go for?”
“Not long; Less than 10 minutes. Too short for us to even pinpoint where we were, and where we’re going. It’s supposed to be effective ”
“And when the next one will start?”
Tumblr media
“It’s... one of those...” The radio operator moved their hands about. Steven noticed that Cyl gestured their hands in a peculiar way when they were in deep thought. “...ever-changing variable. Each dungeon have different time limits between shuffles. If we’re in a Tier III dungeon, time limit varies from five to six hours before the next shuffle.”
“...Fuck me sideways, then.” Brennan muttered under his breath.
“Seconded. We’re really, uh, kind of at the mercy of a colossal contraption here.”
At this point, Steven decided to finally yap. Being left out of the conversation was not a pleasant experience for anyone, especially for someone who was stuck to the wall by the arms. His two seniors, realizing they have forgotten that one more individual is present, turned to Steven and gave him an apologetic grimace.
“...What about sending Steven to scout the modules and find everyone?” Brenn asked, and the brine jolted with excitement. Finally, some action! Steven responded by yipping and vigorously nodding his head in agreement.
“We can, but with the risk of not knowing when this will stop and what wall connects to which?” Cyl commented, their eyes meeting with the brine’s. “Not a great idea. We don’t even know how big this entire thing is. What if we get lost again?”
At that comment, Steven whapped his tail against Cyl’s gelatinous body followed by a slurry of whines towards his mentor.
“We can’t gamble on insanely high risk, Steven. You do not want to learn from Krafften, you understand?” Brennan chided, only to be interrupted by whining through bared fangs. Surely, they could understand that young medic was displeased with the choice they had made? Who did they think he was? He’s licensed, for gods’ sake! He could jump, run, and even leap atop of one of the moving modules if he timed it right enough. It’s not that hard! Instead, he was bound to the wall, treated like a kid. He’s a brine gods dang it, their greatest asset, not a pitiful little brother figure!
Too bad he couldn’t exactly communicate this without signing. He swore Brennan was trying to saying something to shut him up. But right now, Steven didn’t want to hear it nor lose to his superior. And to ensure his victory, Steven replied with an ear-splitting screech, rivaling that of a loudspeaker’s.
Tumblr media
Have you heard the Mining Department’s brines screech before? Brines can be loud, you see. It’s a way for them to intimidate those who trespasses into their territory. Younger ones who were recently rescued whine all the time from within their rooms. The tired nurses and the cleaners down the hall would tell you that it’s like working with fifty alarm clocks everyday, even with noise-cancelling pads installed on their walls. Darlene, the receptionist, would tell you that they whine and yap in pitches that rival a whistle, or Jeb forbid, an emergency siren. (And you may wonder why she always wore the noise-cancelling headphones, donated by the kind souls from Comms. Now you know.)
Steven has the pitch of loudhailer feedback and is as noisy as one if he wanted to. If it’s going to be a lose-lose situation, damn right Steven will make it everyone’s problem.
“It’s not the time for this, you little shit!” Brenn yelled, trying to inch close to the unruly junior and maybe clamp his mouth shut.  “Keep this up and Cyl’s gonna put a mouthful of slime in you, you ‘ear me?!
On the other hand, Cylvus was uncharacteristically quiet through the entire tantrum ordeal. The slimeperson’s eyes were not even on their two bickering teammates. They squinted, blinked, and went wide eyed with realization.
...and then proceeded to wordlessly gave both Brennan and Steven a piece of their mind.
Tumblr media
“Shut up! Shh!!” The slimeperson scolded, and while the two are still stunned, used their hands to turn the two’s faces to the same direction they were previously looking at. “Look there and tell me what you see.”
Steven was about to hiss back when his eyes caught trail of something in the distance. The mismatches eyes were focused on a glint of light in the distance. A ball of yellow, dancing from left to right, left to right. Dancing, like a wisp seeking for attention.
And the brine caught whiff of fear. Fear, like cigar smoke dissipating in the air.
“...Is that...” Brennan muttered, inching further away to look. “Torchlight?”
...And then he realized, eyes blown wide open.
“...we don’t use torches!” The skeleton exclaimed, rattled. “That’s them!“
Tumblr media
   “That’s our guys!”

Chapter 8 - PAGE 1-3
Hello. Due to IRL reasons, this comic will not have a proper upload schedule... sorry about this.
To make things short: I wanted to be professional with the comic, but I couldn’t handle irl stress and overachieving. So I’ll be changing my mindset and make this, truly, a hobby project.
I was planning on putting up quick sketches for a weekly upload, but I decided against it. So the quality will stay the same, just with slow and volatile updates. Even so I will continue to push on.
Thank you for the wait ^ ^

some updates!
hello hello this is doe here!
thank you for sticking with me so far! I hope that people still read my comics (you dont have to like and reblog), and I do hope you enjoy it immensely.
so! there are some updates that will be coming up:
1. I will be porting the comic from wordpress to here as well! There WILL be a masterpost of chapters available here, mostly to gain more traction and ease of access. I don’t think I’m big enough to host a standalone website, so for now I will be hosting them here! (I’m also looking into Webtoons, so those who knows details on it, please feel free to hmu!)
2. There will be new beta readers joining in to help my works. I do not get here alone. I ask from reviews for my works here and there so I can improve and straighten the story up. Their names will be included in the masterlist as well!
3. This is a personal request from me, but if you are interested in the comic, please send asks or comment in the reply section! I would love to answer lore asks, and it helps the activity of this blog as well. So, if you like it, please feel free to send me your thoughts ;v; If not, it’s fine, too.
So yeah! that’s all from me. I’ll try see if I can get a page out today (gotta make changes due to the edits I’m making to the story) so fingers crossed.
Thanks for reading!
