I feel like we should talk about how this is quite literally the only scene in the vees' reactions that velvette is seen smiling in LMAO
like at least val also joins vox in his alastor sadism (not to his insane extent, but he is seen smiling in the previous scenes until vox says his weird shit and insults his entire industry "this is better than sex") but velvette doesn't even join in their sadism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
val only smiles for like a split second in some of the scenes so it's not immediately noticeable but he DOES smile so he IS actually enjoying it with vox
velvette though, legit doesn't give a fuck about alastor suffering and only smiles at the idea of lucifer and adam fucking. girl do you have some hidden interests you would like to talk about? val is expected okay, but velvette??? why is this the only part that interests you??? at least join in your boys' sadism????

But now I wanna think about televangelist Vox with a scholarly background in theology or divinity getting really into Charlie's hotel (hot new scam! He excelled at selling salvation in life, he can totally do it again in Hell!). Let's talk about Christian Universalism

I actually really dislike "cult leader Vox" but only because I don't think most people mean "cult" in a way that I care about.

Warming up to the idea of Vox having been a cult leader while alive but I only like it in a very specific way.
I like imagining young Vox, someone in the cornbelt of America, not living in the big city yet. A small town with a strong religious core. The church being the heart of the community.
Vox doesn't get it. He reads the bible, he says his prayers, but not once has God ever spoken to him. He wonders if there's something wrong with him or if everyone else is just crazy.
When he realizes the preacher is just a man reading a book, he realizes religion is just a tool people use to control others.
The journey in my head is just:
I don't understand religion -> Oh religious leaders are just making shit up -> I could do that

@m3nt4llyr4v3d on yeah, absolutely the main reason it makes little sense is that the show's worldbuilding is largely based on Vibes. Hell's Rings and the politics therein are certainly not A Song of Ice and Fire. I don't say this to degrade the writing, really. It is what it is.
I think it would make sense that Hellborn politics and Sinner politics are wildly different and separated. Lucifer, the Sins, and the Goetia royalty matter a whole lot more to the Hellborn than to Sinners. Sinners only reside in Pride, so the foreign politics of the other Rings don't really matter to them. Lucifer thinks Sinners are awful and doesn't want to interact with them. Ergo, his existence doesn't really matter to Sinners. He's just kinda there, existing, and is really more of a famous mythological figure whose reputation keeps him in power.
I also think that a large portion of Sinners just don't want to follow authority. Plus, the Divine Right of Kings is a more effective propaganda tool when people are born into the system thinking that the monarchy is a fact of life, and their monarchy is their monarchy. Sinners fresh from Earth don't really have a reason to like their new hellish King.
Fighting for my life every time someone is like "well Charlie is the princess of Hell, why can't she free Angel? she's obviously much more powerful than Valentino" like.
Like! No- she's literally not powerful! Her political power is negligible. Sinners degrade and laugh at her on live TV. She can't order Cannibal Town to help her; she had to convince them to willingly follow her for a reward of free, exotic food. Valentino does not see her as a threat. No one does. And she never demonstrates that she has any legitimate 'supernatural' power of her own that would be dangerous to any powerful Overlords with magical abilities of their own. Sure, she can transform into a more demonic form but what does she do with it? Not much! (She fights angels with a weapon like any other normie Sinner she convinced to fight with her)*
She's not Lucifer, with his reality-warping abilities. Her title comes from his and Lilith's, and she hasn't done anything to earn it herself. Why would Overlords see her as anything other than a nepotism baby?
Worse, Lucifer may be the ruler of Hell in name, but he doesn't do anything. He doesn't like Sinners. He's locked himself up in his palace for years. He isn't involved in Hell's political scene.
And the most damning: Overlords consider themselves sovereign rulers (they are described as such by Carmilla). They wouldn't have sovereignty if Lucifer and his daughter actually ruled above them.
*(I do know she has some sort of pyrokinetic ability but like, she still doesn't do anything with it.) (She punches Adam/catches his punch and he's surprised by it stopping him, but like, Lucifer is the ground in that scenario, he's holding her, and all it really proves is that Charlie can hold her arm straight and Lucifer isn't moved by the force Adam tried to hit them with. The physics of it all make it a little boring, I don't care, they're flying in the air and their punches don't move each other.) (Okay I will say: if that didn't make it obvious, I think this show absolutely sucks at portraying powers, supernatural or magical abilities, and the fights... Aren't good. Which very much might skew my perspective into saying "they aren't powerful, they kinda suck.") (It's underwhelming to me!) (But I care more about the politics anyway.)

Also. Sorry I'm in a complaining about fandom mood. I do not get the amount of people who put disclaimers on their Hazbin Hotel fanart like "I hate the show and the creator and everything the show and fandom stand for!! Here's fanart but I am NOT a fan!" Like. Okay... My biggest fandoms were/are Supernatural and Star Wars. You are simply describing what being a fan of media is like

Me, every day: I'm not gonna be mean about Alastor. It's no fun to be mean about Alastor.
Also me: I know the pilot isn't real canon anymore, but Alastor is the kind of guy to tell women to smile, then he slapped Vaggie's ass and forced her into clothes she didn't want to wear for the sake of his musical number. He enjoys displaying his own power, it makes him feel good when other people are terrified of him.

Okay, now that the blog finally got unflagged, I can share this! Massive thanks to @benjimatorarts accepting this commission– I'm delighted with how it turned out! It's nice to have a sort of "cover" for this AU, especially since it's been ruling my life for the past month.
For those who don't know, this AU is predicated on the theory that Niffty is actually a former overlord who Alastor somehow drove into insanity. The story is based around the question: "What if he did the same to Vox?" Developing this AU has been an ongoing collaborative effort between myself and several lovely frequent contributors, and I've really enjoyed what we've put together so far! We mostly focus on Vox's relationship with the Vees in the aftermath of the event and the psychological/emotional fallout thereof, as well as Alastor's reappearance seven years later, when he summons Vox to join him at the hotel. It's honestly been a ton of fun to work on and I think we've gotten some really good angst/black comedy out of it!
But yeah, enough pitching– thank you again to @benjimatorarts for the piece!
