okay we need to have an intervention.
i've noticed that people don't leave the same kind of unhinged compliments under fanfics that visual artists usually receive (eg, "i want to eat your art"), so i've come up with a list that you need to start employing when your friends send you their WIPs and when your favorites update on ao3 but you're having a hard time commenting something that sounds intelligent and you still want to support them
"you're like if [famos author] (eg, Victor Hugo if the fic is angst) was into [fandom]"
"well THIS has been added to my pre-sleep daydream schedule"
"this fic invaded my mind and consumed my brain like a spore"
"I'M LOSING SLEEP OVER THIS ONE, FOLKS"
"yOu'Ve AlReAdY lEfT kUdOs HeRe"
"this fic has me scratching at my yellow wallpaper, it's so good"
"this fic has me checking under my floorboards for the heart of a kind man i murdered, it's so good"
"i'm making my parents read this"
"i know only one chapter is out so far, but i'm going to print this out, staple it together, and put it on my bookshelf next to the canon material"
"this fic gave me another mental illness"
(you can only do this one once) "i made an ao3 account specifically to bookmark this"
"i'm going to print this out so i can eat the words on the paper"
and a couple that are just nice (without the feral nature):
"i made a custom playlist to listen to while i read this fic"
"this fic reminds me of [song]"
"i really liked the part where [x], it really stuck with me"
"i really liked this line, [quote the line,] it was so well-written!"
artists: draw fanart of the fic!! it doesn't matter if you think your art skills are good and it doesnt matter if it's just a sketch!! let the author see it!!
make a moodboard!! for the fic!! let the author see it!!

I'm going to start this post off by saying that I write fic, and I know the pain of putting something out there and not getting a response. It sucks and it hurts and it puts a dent in my self-confidence. If I have the choice between posting a work on AO3 and getting only comments or posting a work on AO3 and getting only kudos, I'll probably choose comments let's say 8 times out of 10.
But with that in mind, posts that attempt to shame or guilt readers into commenting don't actually work.
Negative reinforcement (in the form of shame, guilt, or other worse emotions) doesn't make anyone want to do the thing. It just makes them want to avoid the guilt, etc. Rather than encouraging someone to talk to you about your writing, you're making that person want to avoid you so that they don't have to feel bad. That's just human nature.
I've said before that I think a lot of writers are looking for community rather than comments, and I still think that's true. The reason I love both writing and receiving comments is because it makes me feel like I've made a connection with someone. I may never know their real name or what they look like or where they live or anything else but what fandom we have in common, but we've reached out to each other in this text-based medium and we've shared words that made each other feel something.
I know that these posts are written out of frustration or loneliness or needing support or a hundred other reasons I could list off the top of my head. But when I read "you should be grateful for the things I give you and show me proper appreciation" it just reminds me of my parents telling me to clean my room or to follow the rules while I live under their roof.
It's so much more vulnerable to admit, "I don't know if this story is any good and I really wish someone would reassure me right now."
It's much harder to say, "I feel so alone in this fandom, and I want to make friends with someone."
It's difficult to admit, "I worked so hard on this for so long and I'm so tired, but if someone out there likes it then all of that effort will be worthwhile - and if no one says anything, then I'll feel like my effort was wasted."
I'm not trying to shame the people who made those posts, and if that's how this comes across then I'm sorry. I'm just trying to explain why I think those posts will harm more than they help.
I also hope that any readers who see this post will understand that those writers are just people who are feeling a lot of different ways, and they're venting their frustrations. I've been there. I've reblogged those posts before when I was feeling frustrated like that too.
If you're able to comment, those comments are appreciated. If you're not able to comment (for whatever reason), that's okay too. ❤️

bugs me ngl that the assumption now seems to be that ‘queer’ is always a shorthand you use for a whole bundle of specific labels that you ~*actually*~ identify with. Queer can be the only label. I’m not withholding anything from you by telling you I’m queer.

"Running Up That Hill" was such a perfect song to choose for That Scene™️ for several reasons.
The actual meaning of the song is about how the singer wishes she and a man in her life could swap places to better understand and communicate with each other. Max didn't understand how to communicate how much she was hurting to the people in her life, especially Lucas, so I imagine while she played that song on repeat over the past year, she was thinking about how she wished there was a way to get him and the others to see what she was going through.
But even without knowing the intent of the song, a surface-level reading of the lyrics also works. Someone in pain is making a deal with God to switch places with someone else - which sounds like someone who wishes they could exchange places with a loved one who died. And with the amount of guilt, grief, and isolation Max was feeling this season after Billy's death, I bet a part of her wished it was her who died instead of him. The Vecna's interactions with his victims are similar to someone battling suicidal thoughts.
But when it came to the actual scene, the culmination of all her hours listening to her favorite song, Max turned away from her despair (the Vecna) and chose hope, literally running to her friends and to life. So hearing that someone is making a deal with God and running up a hill towards the thing they want most goes from a tragic interpretation to a triumphant one - with Max choosing to keep living.
That whole scene gave me chills and was just so incredibly well done.

Today in class we discussed archaeological evidence of play and learning in childhood flintknapping.
The evidence isn't ideal, and the analysis is complicated, but I love the idea of a roving gang of children of various ages, packing around hammerstones and low-quality knappable stone, leaving little piles of trash wherever they go and hassling every grownup in the village to help them make good tools.
Of moms watching small bits of debris narrowly miss the fish she just filleted and going "you know who's really good at making spears? Your uncle Bob is really good at making spears. Why don't you go ask him and let me cook?"
Of grandparents who aren't up to going out to gather today sitting for hours showing whatever kids are around new ways to make things.
Of circles of skilled toolmakers interspersed with little kids who watch them intensely, making squiggly, probably-not-very-sharp versions of grownup tools, and proudly showing them off, and using them to make more things.
Humans have always been humans, and kids have always been kids.

batman: what’s the situation?
commissioner gordon: Harley and Ivy have hijacked an AM radio station and taken the employees hostage
batman: what are their demands?
commissioner gordon: they haven’t issued any. they, uh.
batman:
[commisioner gordon turns on the radio]
harley: —you gotta walk away, sweetie. His family sounds completely toxic, if not outright emotionally abusive, and he’s too enmeshed to see it.
caller: no, you’re right. you’re right. I gotta do it.
harley: you got this, honey. now, stay on the line a minute, I’m writing down some the names of some books for you and you can get those from Ivy after we’re done. okay! our next caller —
[commisioner gordon turns off the radio]
batman: what station is this?
commisioner gordon: WGTM.
batman: the one that rebroadcasts rush limbaugh?
commissioner gordon:

commisioner gordon: you know what, i probably didn’t need to call you for this.
