Xianle's fall was premeditated and done by Jun Wu in every detail.
Jun Wu brought the drought, intercepted Yong'An's prayers for Xie Lian, created a fake family whose death was the trigger for the war and the plague that was the final straw for Xianle's downfall.
Without JW doing all of this, it would be difficult to say whether Xianle would have actually fallen. JW sealed Xianle's fate after meeting XL, and he had all the power necessary to do so. But that doesn't mean it was actually fate acting.
If destiny was an immutable force of nature, then Shi Wudu would not be able to steal He Xuan's destiny, after all, what is immutable cannot be undone, right? And as the novel itself says: "no path are bound."
So, Xianle could fall centuries later 'cause of political problems, or it could become even more prosperous and make Yong'An as prosperous as a city of Xianle depending on the emperor.
As for Lang Ying, his kingly aura only appeared and grew stronger as the war progressed. In other words, if there had been no war, his aura would have remained "erased". Perhaps Xianle would not fall to war, but Lang Ying could play a crucial role in solving the political problems facing the kingdom. This could have brought Lang Ying to the throne and the capital would have become Yong'An, but it didn't mean that a civil war would have broken out.
If Xie Lian had been stronger back then and had realized the kind of person Jun Wu was, he probably could have ended the war, whether before or after the plague.
And this all makes Jun Wu a more brilliant villain, cuz he planned every detail and predicted every step that would be taken between the two sides while using Xie Lian's beliefs against himself and also using Xianle's political weaknesses to make the downfall happen faster.
Could what happened to Xianle have been avoided? Difficultly. Jun Wu was very powerful, there was no one at that time strong enough to even hinder him, and if there was, they wouldn't be interested in stopping Jun Wu. He made his choices and used the power he had to put his decisions into practice. "Fate" is just the shallow explanation to blame Xie Lian and take the responsibility off Jun Wu's shoulders.

Quan Yizhen watching Xie Lian, Shi Qingxuan, and Ming Yi crawl out of a hole into his palace and then immediately taking their side and throwing a bed at Pei Ming before proceeding to fight him with no actual context to go on is truly the most iconic thing that has happened thus far

When Hong Hong'er met Dianxia, he said he’d run away from home.
When San Lang met Gege again, he repeated he’d run away from home.
But when Hua Cheng met Xie Lian to never be separated again, he knew: he never ran away FROM home, he was always running away TO home.

Thinking here and... I'm one of who believes that Jun Wu has very similar attitudes to those of sexual abusers.
He has been obsessed with Xie Lian's virginity since his first ascension, so much so that he took him to the land of tenderness to be poisoned with an aphrodisiac;
He has a sword that tests people's virginity?? And of course he used it on Xie Lian;
The calm speech, the intimacy, the way he acts as if everything is normal and praising Xie Lian's growth too... Um, you know, it's very common for sexual abusers to act so naturally towards their victims, even if he is recognized, he will act as if he even has the right to be intimate;
Jun Wu always tries to keep everyone away from Xie Lian and make Xie Lian move away from people too, or humiliate him in some way. For example, trying to make Xie Lian move away from Hua Cheng, wanting to make him believe that Hua Cheng isn't a good person and isn't worthy of his trust, making Xie Lian feel guilty and like someone lesser than him and is being disobedient.
For some people this may not be important, I'm not going to get into the discussion of "fiction x reality", "romanticization" etc., I have no interest in discussing it here, I don't want to know about it, cause I already have my own opinions.
However, for me it's important, this language is too violent for me, and it reflects a lot on my own experiences, which is why I end up thinking about these things a lot. Anyway.

so far I've only seen the "haha jun wu was so funny putting fengqing in charge of the same domain" take and yes it is objectively a hilarious thing for him to have done but has anyone considered he did that hoping they'd fail? i mean look at yin yu and quan yizhen. being in charge of the same domain didn't work out so well for them. I'm betting jun wu was hoping something equally devastating would befall fengqing so that when xie lian eventually ascended again he'd be without his old friends and all alone. put the two known for hating each other together and let them fight over the south and surely they'll end up destroying each other right? well jokes on jun wu fengqing are the worst kind of codependant and they ain't going anywhere

HC saw XL in his diva makeup popstar phase and loved him,.....
Then saw him in his stressed college burnout phase, his depressed emo phase, and his baggy old sweatpants phase and still loved him. (Not to mention all three times that XL cross-dressed)
Thats real love.
"What matters is you and not the state of you"
he really meant it.... and that's beautiful.

“Hua Cheng only stood behind him, his hands supporting his waist steadily, but with just this person, it felt as if the entire world was behind him.”
I really love this quote from chapter 200, so here’s a (messy) sketch of that moment on the giant dianxia statue!

On my 100th reread of tgcf (I'm halfway through the first book) I am only now realising how much of a romantic Xie Lian is.
I thought the only line that indicated his nature was during the seaside "what matters is you, not the state of you" conversation where Xie Lian said "there were very difficult times in my life where I imagined if someone could see me like that and still love me. I still don't know if there would be anyone like that". But this is way later in the 3rd book and before that I hadn't imagined Xie Lian wanting someone to love him.
But I am now realising its outright clear from the beginning. In the first quest, Xie Lian enters the tea shop and looks out the window, noticing how beautiful the scenery was and his first thought was "this would be such a nice place for lovers' chance encounters" and immediately after that he has in own meet-cute with the butterfly.
Later, as he is led out of the bridal sedan by Hua Cheng, he is constantly thinking how great a husband Hua Cheng would be, "considerate, patient, loving" etc etc. Xie Lian enjoyed playing the bride then. He was thinking "oh it would be so nice if this were real, and this man was my husband". You cannot tell me that Hua Cheng was the only one swooning at the hand holding.
I see so many posts and edits of Hua Cheng being whipped from the start, but honestly Xie Lian was falling in love right from Mount Yujun. He knows nothing of the man but from one romantic encounter he remembers the boot bells so fondly and decides "he was soft with me. I like him". I know it's mxtx's doing and all but there is still something to be said when the story is narrated entirely in Xie Lian's head that every interaction XL has with San Lang that onwards is painted so romantically. Xie Lian is a romantic, it didn't take him long to fall hard and love Hua Cheng on purpose.
