also to add to all of this i feel like something that should be noted (at least by my dumbass) is that, in a way... erwin never really lies to his soldiers. sure, he'll mislead them (telling them different locations of where eren's squad actually is as an example) if it's to protect an important asset within the survey corps, but he never outright lies (only from what i remember though dont take this as gospel). he calls himself a conman and a liar because so many people died under his command when he'd say that he fought for humanity when he really fought for himself all sorts of people fight for themselves in the scouts (eren with fighting titans and him n the buddies seeing the outside world, jean originally wanted to join the mps to live comfortably, etc) and their own dreams... but hteir own dreams are pretty much what is a part of what makes humanity... well. humanity. erwin fought to be able to learn about if his father's theories were right, which is just as equally valid as anybody else's

when he was faced with the option that he could hide behind his soldiers and see what's in the basement, erwin did NOT take that option. it's often in media we'll see corrupt higher-ups that would be cowardly and hide behind their own soldiers who would act like meat shields, or those that would just only use their soldiers for the dirty work. erwin doesn't do that

he acknowledges the choices he can make and gets insight from a third party, and eventually settles with him leading the rest of the recruits. he doesn't say they'll 'live' in these shitty conditions, doesn't say that they're fighting with full-on glory and gonna look badass, he keeps it real and actively leads these soldiers to certain death... but he doesn't cower behind them. he leads them right at the front knowing HE HIMSELF is the first to die

despite how terrifying and fucking batshit insane erwin can be, the completely unhinged creacher he is, he still has a heart and cares for his soldiers (he has intense survivor's guilt, regrets and remorse as he envisions himself on a mountain of their bodies, or seeing them all gathered around him waiting for his next move. he shows clear fear and pain, even a sense of emptiness at the realization that the young recruits would all die from his orders.. not to mention how stoic he had to keep himself as they returned from the 57th expedition and were heckled.

of course, we cant forget stohess and how fucking insane that was (annie and eren shifting, a SHITTON of civilian deaths bc of their bullshittery) and how many people it killed under erwin's orders... but in this sort of situation, it's a 'lesser evil'. either more people die in the long run as the female titan escapes to kill more soldiers and people alike, or capturing her then and there despite how much bullshit occurs

bro is a complicated character. he's stoic and formal and almost graceful in his own right, but also can be completely unhinged, manipulative and undoubtedly a gambling man-- and not to mention borderline suicidal. but that isn't to say he's heartless-- he cares immensely and knows what must come with the role of being a commander: you can't always have a situation where everyone just gets out alive no problem, no casualties, no nothing, there will be situations where it's either one choice or the other, and both are shit, but one will be better in the long run. he held his own survivor's guilt, his own remorse, he's got his own flaws, but that's what makes him so human.

he's simple and complex, got all sorts of layers to him and. man he's fuckin wild

What met Mike at first, after he'd given the recently-appointed Commander such horrific reports, Erwin had stared almost deadpan at the words that cursed his gaze. It was the worst possible scenario, something that happened so suddenly, so-- so out of nowhere, merely a few days after they'd gotten to Wall Rose just before they themselves would've experienced the fall... the sightings of a Colossal Titan, sixty meters tall, taller than the Walls, that took out the Southern gate of Wall Maria at Shiganshina district as another Titan with armored flesh like a knight's had broken through the Northern gate.

It was like some sick, cruel joke. A joke played on him after all of the casualties seen from Commander Sha-- Keith's expeditions, now they'd only double. A leader was needed now, more than ever, but could Erwin truly succeed in such a role? When they'd been met with what could only be described as the worst fucking casualty that could ever befall Humanity?

Perhaps not. But they couldn't go back now. Regretting these decisions would only dull future decisions... all that'd be left for them is to curl up and die. And Erwin would not have that.

" 'Wall Maria's been breached'... " Erwin read aloud as if to cement such a horrific realization in his own mind, yet despite the stress this would all put upon him, there was no doubt about it. The cogs could be seen just turning in his head through those icy eyes, which began to narrow in focus. Erwin suddenly slapped the report down onto his desk, standing up with urgency.

" Seems to be Hell truly has been waiting for me... Everyone else in the Walls, too, by the looks of it. But if we're able to limit civilian casualties, then the better, despite our circumstances. " Instantly, the Commander was in work mode, something often seen from his Section-Commander days of course, but this was something far more calculated than what might've been considered before. The blonde focused on the other before him, lips pursing for a moment. " Send a request for emergency rations, I'll accompany you-- we're preparing for a sudden expedition that will leave us setting out in a few days. I want to make sure we get the refugees of Wall Maria to reach Wall Rose safely. While I trust in our fellow Regiments... " A pause, perhaps realizing his place.

" ... I cannot guarantee their success rate when it comes to battling the Titans. We will get into the Long-Distance Scouting Formation as I'd proposed to Shadis before his resignation and make sure everything is color-coded. "

" If we want this done properly, everyone needs to come together. Not just the Garrison scrambling along the Walls while the Military Police and them are left to clean up the messes. Do you understand? " He knew Mike did. Erwin would trust Mike with his life-- one of the rarer things that Erwin could ever give. He's known Mike since the earlier cadet days. Hange, as well. And yet...

... Some part of him felt ready to falter, deep down. An operation of this magnitude when they'd already lost so many soldiers... Erwin had to turn away and compose himself. Deep breaths.

He'd need to prepare for a gamble, then. Their first expedition with himself as leader... he'd need to find funding, make sure they had enough rations to handle the journey to help escort the refugees across Wall Maria to Wall Rose. It'd take days. Weeks, perhaps... and that was if Premier Zachary had faith in them. After everything with Keith? He was sure it'd be damn near zero faith, but Erwin would still work despite that. Helping refugees and survivors was their top priority.

Well, seemed like Erwin found a kindred spirit.

Late into the night, doing paperwork, Erwin had sworn up and down to himself he heard footsteps and somebody walking about-- so, when he'd gone to investigate, he saw Jean himself walking through the halls... no doubt, very exhausted. Erwin had brought him into his office without a second thought, but made it clear that Jean wasn't in any trouble.

It was often some Scouts would wake up late into the night, maybe after some sort of nightmare, or just being unable to sleep, or something else entirely-- Erwin could only guess based on behavioral reports about Kirschtein, it possibly could've been a nightmare... he was close to a trainee, Marco Bodt, whom unfortunately didn't make it out of what happened at Trost. Erwin knew that feeling all too well.

" I am sure you're fine, Kirschtein, " Erwin spoke in a gentle, perhaps father-like tone. " I can... understand having the look of exhaustion, from... well, exhaustion. " He gestured to one of the chairs for Jean, across from himself-- Erwin didn't go behind his desk. There were times where formalities were not always required. What mattered, right now, was the well-being of one of his soldiers. The blond offered a smile to the younger,

" While undoubtedly odd having someone such as myself invite you to my office like this, I still want to ensure your health, be it mental or physical. If you're unable to sleep, you're free to join me in my office... there's often times where I won't truly sleep due to my work, so if you need someone to talk to, I'm here. "

character development questions.

honestly, since we know SO LITTLE about erwin-- i've just. made my own headcanons

1) we know erwin grew up in wall rose! i've headcanoned, judging by how he's pretty well-dressed as a child, that he's in the northernmost district: utopia district-- this is mainly due to his father's job as a teacher, which was no doubt considered very much needed in their time as there'd be many people that would need education in such huge districts. he still lives there!... though, erwin doesn't visit as often as he used to. not after what happened to his father.

2) some eldian/paradisian credits, a paper flower made by a special someone in his youth, a toy soldier doll and many, many scouts insignias. the paper flower was from a childhood sweetheart-- the toy soldier was a gift from his father, and... while some would consider it morbid or odd, erwin has a habit on holding onto any spare badges that havent been able to be given to anybody. a soldier sometimes may not have family of any kind to remember them by-- not even a distant relative or a friend. so, erwin keeps them. there's more in his desk and he can't bring himself to ever let go of them.

3) an abandoned place somewhere free of titans-- something like being able to adventure in random places. erwin, despite what he may or may not show, is a very adventurous and curious guy! he's often hid personality traits considered more 'childish', but being able to look through a visible representation of the past is something absolutely intriguing to him. if he could bring anybody... well... most definitely one of the vets, if not all of them.

4) holy shit. well... yeah, hes been to court. didnt go too well after getting his shit rocked (figuratively and literally later on in life) but! hey! he got out of court AND got a new queen crowned! viva la revolution! it should be known that erwin also. VERY much dislikes being in court. that wasn't the first time he's been tried, and sure as hell not the last.

Sitting in that carriage with Premier Zachary was one that left an odd sense of dread in Erwin. It was something small, at first, merely listening to him until he saw those clenched teeth past the beard and the manic look in his eyes... speaking of the nobles and aristocrats in such a manner-- ever since Erwin's gamble in attempting to expose them, it seemed to be the Premier Commander was... almost joyful in the thought of such sadism that'd be brought tenfold onto the nobility.

It left Erwin uneasy. There was a lump in his stomach, it felt like, this feeling that he was like a cornered animal in that very carriage... that if he were to say something wrong, he'd be the one to earn the Premier's ire.

It was true, there were many who despised the nobility for their actions and selfishness when it came to trying to help themselves, to take funding from the Survey Corps and to put it more and more into money for the higher-class-- he'd had to deal with it for a long time, but there was a difference between this want for justice and... genuine love for torture. Erwin wanted justice. That was what separated him and the Premier.

" Thank you, sir. " Erwin spoke, making sure to try to hide his reluctance, " It was... just a gamble. Another one of my gambles. I have to thank you and Commander Pyxis, sir. "

He wanted to be as far away from Premier Zachary as possible. He wanted to go home.

Hesitation-- a habit with Erwin, it was leaving such a sinking feeling in his gut. He was never good with practicing the ODM gear, and the thought of having to try to use it soon enough for some night training terrified him. After all, what the hell was he going to say to their head instructor if he were late again? The lectures was something Erwin was far more used to-- that and, shockingly enough, hand-to-hand combat. It was the ODM gear that always intimidated him.

Glancing up from their table, Erwin's eyes lit up in utter relief as he heard Miche say that-- sure, it was no doubt a joke, a bit of a tease towards Erwin, but he'd turn those tables right back by taking it in stride! He had fucking balls to say that to Commander Shadis himself. It was no doubt about it-- Erwin was a man that thought much more forward compared to some of his comrades. He was a man that wanted to lower the casualties by any means necessary-- and the recent expedition that left so many dead has left Erwin furious. Soldiers were ordered to be left behind. Erwin bucked that order.

The Section-Commander's voice was laced with venom, a trembling anger that seemed so ready to bubble over in his attempts to try to hold back any rage that could've gotten him into even worse trouble-- but he barely cared about that right now.
