Time to post this here now since y’all don’t know how to act.

Also I know y’all like to have your little links and sources and that like sooooo totally fine and great! But that seems so fruitless when arguing against people who believe this type of thing plus I’m feeling so emotional right now and this post is mainly going to be emotions and more emotions lol!

Now I’m sure y’all have seen the post about those celebrities singing “Imagine”- that’s becoming the unspoken anthem for this pandemic we’re going through right now? It’s so weird. Anyway, with the criticism for what celebs are doing (singing about peace and a not so materialistic life while living in eternal paradise), allegations against John being an abuser have also come to light. Now I’m probably gonna get hate for this- which...okay whatevs I’m a black gay woman living in the south show me what ya got homie- but this needs to be said:

If you go around defaming John Lennon’s name saying that he beat his wife and kids, you are not saying it out of awareness and care for victims of domestic abuse but because you’re the type to spread lies simply to have a common opinion. As a victim of domestic violence, I’m not here to excuse the time John hit Cynthia and him not being there for Julian in his youth. Trust me. But I have had enough hearing people say that John Lennon beat his wife and kids as though it is the complete truth. Spreading lies and false stories about him frequently beating women does not help domestic abuse victims because whenever it gets proved wrong that it isn’t right, no one takes domestic abuse seriously. Understand? Yes, John did strike Cynthia once (as discloses by her in her book) in his youth and she left him for it only to return after some time. And while I do NOT condone his behavior that does not make someone an “abuser” especially since it was one instance when he was young and yes- notoriously violent. To everyone, unfortunately. But not only did John apologize for his behavior, but he was also making an effort and displaying to the world how much he has improved as a man. Indeed, he was. But as you all know, before he could pursue this new life he was creating for himself he was shot at a young age. Now I know that a lot of you on here are younger than 15 and your perspective on things like that is different but 40 is VERY young. Especially when one considers the abrupt way in which he was taken.

Okay, that was pretty rambly but all I’m saying is: use your resources and research. Not only that but think before you make such terrible claims. John does not deserve the slander. Does he deserve to be held accountable for cheating on Cynthia and not being the best father to Julian when he could? Definitely. But think about the situation also. He was a child himself when he had Julian. He was a Beatle. He suffered from childhood trauma and had an absent father himself. That man didn’t know the first thing about parenthood and I always find myself thinking if he had a stable upbringing then he would have been a terrific father, simply because I do believe that it was in himself to be one. Or if he did like George and had a family when he was ready, then he would have been an amazing father.

Also I must ask: Why John? Ringo has come out to say that he was abusive to his wife. Where are the pitchforks and slandering? I think it’s because Ringo out lives John, and got to prove himself as a person and improve. Plus people are quick to make John seem bad because he’s the snarky, more cynical one while Ringo was happy and plucky. John died young and didn’t get the chance so our last impression of him is him living most of his life being not a good guy.

But let this be a lesson to you about humanity. People grow and change. Someone being famous doesn’t mean they have to be a saint. That’s why so many people (myself included) love John Lennon so much. He was unapologetically human and exposed himself of his actions. Most of the time when a man is found out to have a bad past, it’s because someone else called him out on it. Very rarely will a male celebrity come up and say “hey I was like a shitty dude”. Especially one with John Lennon’s fame. Instead of using this as an excuse to point fingers and go “LOOK! SEE! HE’S A BAD GUY!!” Take this as an opportunity to see how much he’s changed for the better. It makes me sad to think that he died so young and all everyone wants to bring up any time they have the chance is his unfortunate past. I’m someone who’s done a lot to change herself over the years, like a lot of us have and will. No one deserves to die and be remembered as terrible when you’re much more than that.
