Yes Women (Take Up Space)
Tumblr media
Yesterday, millions watched Alexandria Osacio-Cortez defeat Joe Crowley, a longtime Democrat incumbent of New York’s 14th Congressional District. The win shocked publications and pundits, many accustomed to the same names and faces. The New York Times referred to Elite Daily, Mic and Refinery29 (publications that saw something in her that they didn’t) as, quite absurdly, “websites most often associated with millennial and female audiences.”

She has arguably inspired many who believe that we can do better for ourselves and our communities than what has been offered.
I know I’m inspired.
And while I may never go into politics (tried that, wasn’t for me), her win reminds me that we don’t have to settle for just anything. It’s a hard, but necessary lesson. I know I shrink myself at times because I don’t want to seem too big. Because when you’re too big, people start asking questions. Or they start talking about you. We’re conditioned to believe that everyone has to like you. However, the prophet(ess) is never welcome in (her) own hometown. At the end of the day, it’s not about pleasing everyone. It’s about doing the right thing. And we shrink ourselves because we don’t want to seem like we’re taking up space? Baby girl. Take up that space.

P.S. The designer in me is sending shoutouts to her design team because wow. Reaching beyond the red, white, and blue? The upward movement? *chef kiss*
