Have you seen this childhood show: Xiaolin Showdown (2003-2006), United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: No submitted commentary.
[Mod A: I definitely have not heard of this show and my first impression of it is mistaking the big guy in the background for a Mountie haha (He is actually meant to be a Texas cowboy named Clay). This show was meant to be a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, with an East Asian fight art style and philosophy combined with a Western-style humour and character. Each character is a dragon/dragon in training: Omi (yellow guy and Xiaolin Dragon of Water), Kimiko Tohomiko (the tech girl and Xiaolin Dragon of Fire), Raimundo Pedrosa (self-elected team leader and Xiaolin Dragon of Air) and Clay Bailey (team muscle and Xiaolin Dragon of Earth). Together, they work with Dojo Kanojo Cho (green shapeshifting dragon advisor/mode of transportation) to fight against the antagonist Heylin team and retrieve/protect the Shen Gong Wu (a set of powerful ancient hidden artifacts that only Dojo can really sense in the environment). Each episode ends with a magical duel called Xiaolin Showdown (they said the title of the show!) to decide who gets possession of the Shen Gong Wu. It sounds interesting even I didn’t really watch any martial arts shows growing up!]

Have you seen this childhood show: The Hive (2011-2016), United Kingdom (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: No user commentary.
[Mod A: I haven’t heard of this show, but this CGI show reminds me of Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends in terms of the odd CGI character design (I’m sorry but both shows creep me out!). This show was about the Bee Family with Buzzbee, Rubee, Babee (Side note: I always wonder what happens to all the characters named some variation of Baby when they become adults with that name), and Momma and Pappa Bee. Each episode centres around a specific moral/life lesson for little kids to learn about. This show encouraged exploring/playing outside, spending time with your family, being friendly and rewards being curious about the world. This show does have a Queen Bee, which makes me very curious about how they explained the monarchy to kids haha. There’s not really a lot of information out there I can say about the show, but I do hope it was able to communicate to kids that bees and spiders are our friends and that they shouldn’t try to kill them (but let them outside instead)!]

Have you seen this childhood show: As told by Ginger (2000-2006), United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: This show made me feel sad sometimes. Not in a bad way, but in like a bittersweet way.
[Mod A: This might have been the only show in this kind of animation art style (by the Klasky Csupo studio at Nickelodeon) that I haven’t seen (since I’ve seen Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys and Rugrats). This show was about a middle schooler (later high schooler) named Ginger Foutley who, with her friends, tries to become “more than a social geek”. Courtney Gripling, the most popular girl in the school, is intrigued by Ginger’s “gingerism” (her odd phrases/habits) and consequently takes interest in Ginger and tries to include her in the social events of the school. Courtney’s right-hand woman, Miranda Killgallen, is jealous of the attention Courtney places on Ginger and works to make sure Ginger does not replace her in the popularity standings (I wonder how well it held up that the Black best friend was more of an antagonist). These character dynamics sounds like a great set up for a rom-com! Everyday after school, Ginger writes about her daily adventures in her diary. The show was nominated for three Emmy awards for Outstanding Animated Program, as the characters actually changed according to the plot arcs, grew up, and changed clothes throughout the show (which was rare for animation at the time as it meant more work, time and money). They also had some quite serious plots: break-ups, bullying, caffeine addictions, concerns about suicidal ideation in students (based on their class work), death, depression, and emergency surgeries. Sounds kind of like an animated Degrassi, very intriguing (makes total sense why it would be bittersweet to watch)!]

Have you seen this childhood show: The Jersey (1999-2004), United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: It’s like a sports version of Quantum Leap.
[Mod A: I actually haven’t seen either Quantum Leap or The Jersey, so I don’t know what this means lol (but I will research to understand!). Quantum Leap is about a physicist who involuntarily travels through space-time to correct historical mistakes by using the bodies of people in that historical period. The Jersey uses a similar concept to this where four teenagers (Nicholas "Nick" Lighter, Morgan Hudson, Coleman Galloway, and Elliot Riffkin) share a magic football jersey (which was Nick’s grandfather’s old jersey) that puts one of them into the body of a famous athlete (from various sports) in order to learn important life lessons. I did not recognize any athletes on the Wikipedia list except for Tony Hawk and Sabrina Bryan (they had a Cheetah Girl in one episode?!?!!), but that’s bc most of them were American footballers or basketball players (sports I didn’t grow up watching), and the two hockey players were not on my hometown team. I’m also so curious, do they telepathically connect with the mind of the athlete or is it a full on possession? Regardless, this seems to be heavily focused on American Football, although it seems there were some basketball, rugby, wrestling, baseball and hockey episodes. From the episode descriptions, Morgan seems to be the most compelling character to me because she got to transport into the soccer and hockey bodies! They also had an episode “Nick’s a Chick” where the main guy Nick insults women’s sports and consequently gets transported into the body of Lisa Leslie (a WNBA player) to hopefully learn to put some respect on women’s sports <3 Another unexpected connection from another poll is that Lee Thompson Young (The Famous Jett Jackson, RIP) was in an episode! Probably would be more interested in it if the jersey was a hockey jersey (but that’s just my bias haha)].

Have you seen this childhood show: Shaun the Sheep (2007-2021), United Kingdom (Grammelot (just sounds))
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: Stop motion is so cool, made me laugh so many times.
[Mod A: Loved this as well, though I’ve only really seen the movie (I also may have played a rip-off Shaun the Sheep video game in the 2000s lol). I love stop motion and Aardman Animations (studio that created this), because they also created Wallace and Gromit (which is ICONIC!!) and Shaun was a character from “A Close Shave” and “Shopper 13” (from Wallace and Gromit 2002 series). This show was a spin-off where Shaun was the main character as the leader of the flock. Shaun lives at Mossy Bottom in Northern England, with his flock mates and the sheepdog Bitzer. Shaun is fascinated by human culture and technology, and is always trying to introduce the other sheep to these technology in crazy ways while trying to keep their activities a secret from the farmer. Bitzer is sometimes an ally to the sheep, but depending on how dangerous the technology/activity is, he will also try to deter them from proceeding. This show occupies a similar spot in my mind to the “Barnyard” movie that came out a year earlier (2006), as it had a similar premise except that was about cows (I loved that movie as a kid, not sure how well it has held up haha). Very fun show/movie overall!]

Have you seen this childhood show: Rocket Power (1999-2004), United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: I feel like whenever people are reminiscing over late 90s/early 2000s cartoons, Rocket Power doesn’t get mentioned that much but that just might be what I’ve seen.
[Mod A: I have seen this show and I loved it (I also had a Nickelodeon book that had some Rocket Power stories in it). Besides the iconic Avril Lavigne, this show was probably one of the main influences that got me into skateboarding as a kid haha. I also loved that they incorporated other extreme sports such as street hockey, snowboarding (my favourite sport), and surfing (all sports I grew up playing a lot, except I preferred boogie boarding like Sam over surfing (my balance is terrible on the water haha)). I also definitely had a crush on Reggie Rocket as a kid, but enough about my own memories! This show was about a gang of kids who bond over competing in extreme sports: Oswald “Otto” Rocket (a sports perfectionist), his sister Regina “Reggie” Rocket (a tomboy (same as me)), Maurice “Twister” Rodriquez (the slightly dumb videographer of the group), and Sam “Squid” Dillard (the tech person of the group). They live in Southern California and often hang out at the Shore Shack (a burger/surf shop) operated by their father Ray “Raymundo” Rocket and his best friend Tito Makani. Most episode revolve around either recreationally participating in a sport, or competing in a competition where they encounter problems/tensions that gets ultimately solved by remembering that friendship is more important than winning/pulling off perfect tricks. I actually would love to rewatch this show, because I still take part in all of the mentioned sports as an adult and I would love to see how much they get right/wrong about actually doing them (but they most likely got it right seeing at the show seems to be a love letter to the extreme sports community <3)]

Have you seen this childhood show: The Famous Jett Jackson (1998-2001), Canada and the United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: RIP Lee Thompson Young
[Mod A: I have heard of this show, but I was a bit too young for it! It was about Jett Jackson, a famous actor who moves the cast/production of the show he stars in, Silverstone, from Hollywood back to his hometown of Wilsted, North Carolina in order to stay close to his family and help revitalize the economy of his small town by providing jobs to the townspeople and keeping the small family businesses alive. Half of the plot of Jett Jackson was about his life outside of the production where he gets involved in a mix of humourous situations and local politics with his friends (who were a mix of his school friends and cast/crewmates). They explored various issues such as the ethics of censorship, big box stores, and class issues (such as Jett realizing his own potential out-of-touch perspective with African American issues due to the privileges of his fame and wealth). The other half of the show is set in “show within a show” Silverstone, where Jett plays a spy who fights against villains such as “The Rat” as part of the spy organization Mission Omega Matrix (MOM). I don’t know if this was played out like it was actually happening or if we see the behind the scenes crew during the action sequences, but it does sound like Disney reused the “show within a show” premise for Sonny with a Chance (which was one of the last Family Channel (aka Canadian Disney Channel) shows I watched). It seems like a really interesting show, very sorry to hear about Lee Thompson Young (the actor who played Jett Jackson)’s death.]

should there be an option for "didnt watch this personally but had younger kids in the household that did" or does that just count as "have seen it" or "have heard of it"?
Saw there’s a couple more asks in the inbox, I promise I will answer them later (as I have to go to bed now)!
I just wanted to give you guys time to think about this question because it’s something I’ve been wondering myself (as there are some shows that I watched as a teenager/adult as I have younger cousins/from babysitting). I see this type of commentary pop up in the tags/replies, so I wanted to see if I could make this fit within the poll options.
I do already have an option for “not sure if seen it, was very young when it aired” so I imagine it would make sense to have an option for being a teenager/adult when it aired (since my concept of nostalgia around childhood shows is if you were 2-12 when it aired, meaning you grew up watching it). That way, we get both sides of the spectrums in terms of being “too young or too old” for a show (and I think we are pretty evenly distributed in terms of age range/generations so hopefully this might work).
A poll option could be:
“Have seen it (when I was a teenager/adult)”
So a poll could look like this:
“Have seen it (when I was a kid)
Have seen it (when I was a teenager/adult)
Not sure if seen it (was very young when it aired)
Have not seen it, but heard of it!
Have not heard of it!”
Does this make sense? Do you think this will make responding to it more accurate or is it too specific? Please let me know, thank you!

I'm so sorry for your loss, I hope 2024 is a better year for you!
Thank you, it sucks (bc my Dido was a really lovely, friendly dude) but it’s a part of life and a good learning experience! I’ve been really lucky that this was the first family member death I can remember (my Nana died when I was four, and for her the grief was more for the potential role she could’ve had in my life as I unfortunately do not remember her well).
I do feel a strange optimism for this year, so fingers crossed for a better year for you, everyone and me <3

Please take all of the time that you need dear ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for your very kind message!
I definitely took all the time I needed! who knew that the five stages of grief was an actual real thing and not just a concept lmaooo I was solidly in the denial phase when I said I would post again before 2024 haha.
Seriously, I am doing a bit better, still in the depression stage. We haven’t had the funeral yet since it will be at Dido’s hometown in Poland (so it won’t be for a while bc of travel arrangements hence no closure yet).
I just wanted to thank you all so so much for your patience, I haven’t really been up to posting anything but I am working to catch up on the slack.
I have work this week, but I hope to start working on posts on Friday night to be posted this weekend!
Again thank you so much to everyone for your patience during this unexpected hiatus and thank you to all the new followers who followed even with no active polls for the last two weeks! I really appreciate seeing your commentary on the old polls!
Hope you all have a good week and looking forward to getting back into the swing of things,
<3 Mod A

I am very sorry to hear a out your Dido, I wish thw beat for you and your family ❤️
Drink lots of water and have a good break ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for your well wishes!
Unfortunately my Dido passed away this morning. I didn’t know he wouldn’t get better when I posted the previous update, but we found out a couple hours after that update that he wasn’t going to live past a couple days, so I’ve had some time to accept it even though I’m really sad about it. Sorry for not posting an update on the 26th like I said I would, was at the hospital all day.
The good thing is that we got to celebrate his 90th birthday on the 24th, so nine decades is a pretty good run!
I hope to resume polls before 2024 begins (it will be a good distraction) but not really up to doing so tonight or tomorrow.
Hope everyone is doing well and spending some time with their family/friends <3

Just a quick note to say that I won’t be able to update with new polls for the next two days (since the queue ran out) as I’ve been busy with baking/cooking the Christmas Eve dinner for the last couple of days! I was hoping to have had some time this morning, but my Dido (grandfather) ended up in the hospital last night, so I went to visit him instead.
Hopefully will be back on December 26th when it gets less busy here! I will also be able to answer asks/questions properly on the 26th as well!
Hope you all are having a wonderful winter and are doing well and staying healthy <3

Have you seen this childhood show: Octonauts (2010-Present), United Kingdom and Ireland (English, was dubbed in many other languages)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories:
First user commentary: I loved this show as a kid, both me and my best friends neurodiversity latched onto it as young kids and we aren’t as obsessed about it now, but is still one of the kid shows that we will gladly watch with our younger siblings. gotta love shows that are a bit more subtle educational shows. i still remember so many facts lmao
Second user commentary: Shout out to this show for getting me interested in vehicle design! I mean- LOOK at the OCTOPOD. That was the coolest thing I ever saw as a child and it’s still the coolest thing I’ve seen today.
This show was submitted twice!
[Mod A: According to the wikipedia, this show is like a kids version of Star Trek or the Thunderbirds (in terms of the exploration and educational factor), which is pretty cool! It was about an underwater crew made of eight members (all with their own special skill sets) who use fictional high tech machines to explore the ocean. While the machines and the Octopod (their home base) is fictional (so far), the actual environments they explore (like the Great Barrier Reef) and the animals they meet (like the whale shark) are very real! The cast comprises of Barnacles (Polar Bear, Captain), Kwazii (Cat, Lieutenant/Cryptozoologist), Peso (Penguin, Medic), Prof. Inkling (Dumbo Ocotpus, Founder/Oceanographer), Dr. Shellington (Sea Otter, Biologist), Tweak (Rabbit, Engineer), Dashi (Dachshund, Computer Programmer/Photographer) and Tunip (Vegimal, Chef). I was heavy into marine biology (as well as Astronomy) as a kid, so if this show came out earlier, I would’ve been really into it, particularly since it was quite educational and provided interesting facts about the ocean and the animals that live there. Dr. Shellington (the sea otter) probably would’ve been my favourite, bc that’s my favourite marine animal <3]

Have you seen this childhood show: The Brothers Garcia (2000-2004), United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: I loved the theme song. And they made a revival series last year for HBO Max but it got cancelled after one season.
[Mod A: I haven’t seen the show, but the vibes of the siblings remind me of the relationship I have with my sisters (particularly as the oldest sister haha)! This show was about a Mexican-American family and their children Larry (11), Lorena (Larry’s fraternal twin sister, 11), George (12), and Carlos (13) and how they clash against each other, learn from each other and grow together in San Antonio, Texas. Larry exhibits classic youngest child syndrome in his quest to get attention from his parents, but is overshadowed by Lorena (who is charismatic and draws attention), George (who is very smart) and Carlos (who plays on many sports teams). As a result of this, Larry struggles to find something that makes himself unique (in his own eyes at least) and the show is about him growing in that regard. The show is narrated by an adult Larry, so the recollections can be a bit biased, but it is clear that the family love each other despite the sibling rivalry (which from my experiance can be a form of love haha). This show is notable as being the first English-language sitcom to have an all-Latino cast and creative team!]

Have you seen this childhood show: 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd (1999-2002), Canada and United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: The show got cancelled after 40 episodes so the main character never finished all 100 deeds.
[Mod A: This show was about a bully named Eddie McDowd who, after being caught bullying a kid by a mysterious man, is turned into a dog as a punishment for his merciless bullying/general selfishness. In order to become a boy again, he has to complete 100 good deeds (which is apperently the number that will prove that Eddie has actually learnt, changed and grown as an empathetic human being). Now, he must go through life as a dog, with everyone treating him like a dog except the last kid he bullied, Justin Taylor (who is also the only one who can hear Eddie talk in dog form). Eddie lives with Justin’s family while completing his deeds (I don’t know if Eddie’s original family think Eddie is missing or they don’t care where he is, in which case is a very sad backstory). Occasionally the mysterious man, known as the Drifter, will come around to mark whenever a good deed has been done, and if Eddie has messed up, will take away a good deed from the tally. As the submitter stated, the show was cancelled, so we will never know if Eddie becomes a boy again or not. While I love that Brenda Song was in this show (London Tipton from Suite Life of Zack and Cody), I don’t know if I would’ve liked this show, because as a kid, non-consensual body transformation freaked me out so much (like the scene where the parents turned to pigs in Spirited Away or when Charlie Cox got turned into a mouse in Stardust) haha. Sounds like a really interesting if not angsty concept (that may have been played for laughs)]

Have you seen this childhood show: Cousin Skeeter (1998-2001), United States (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: I don’t remember any episodes but I do remember this show made me laugh.
[Mod A: This show was about Skeeter (a puppet voiced by Bill Bellamy) moving in with his cousins and how this affects Bobby (Robert Ri’chard) who is the same age as Skeeter. Skeeter is not seen as a puppet in this universe (but instead is considered pretty strange), so the main plot revolves around Bobby and Skeeter growing up, getting into shenanigans, and learning from each other. Skeeter is a popular ladies man, while Bobby is smart (and a bit of a nerd) who helps Skeeter get out of situations. Skeeter canonically is good friends with Dennis Rodman, Michael Jordan, and MC Lyte (whose life was saved by Skeeter). I love that Rondell Sheridan, who played the father in That’s so Raven and Cory in the House (two of my favourite shows when I was younger), was also in this show! I am not a fan of puppets, so I don’t know if I would’ve watched this, but it seems like a really cool show that was cancelled too early!]

Have you seen this childhood show: Taina (2001-2002), United States (English and Spanish)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: The theme song always pops in my head when I remember this show! And they also had some pretty big music stars on as guests: Shakira, Solange, Kelly Rowland, Luis Fonsi.
[Mod A: The theme song in question is “Gonna Be a Star” and it was sung by Christina Vidal who played Taina. Taina was a Puerto Rican teenager who attends the Manhattan High School of the Performing Arts to train to become a singer and actress. She attends the school with her bestie Renee Jones (a rapper who is also boy-crazy) and runs into their childhood friend Lamar (aspiring director/writer with a crush on Taina) and his friend Daniel (multi-instrumentalist who may have a crush on Renee and accompanies Taina when she sings). Each episode, Taina deals with friendship issues, usually runs into her nemesis (Maritza Hogg, who knew them when they were younger, is ruthless but sometimes an ally to Taina), goes to school, gets into mishaps with her friends and sometimes performs a song (by herself or sometimes with the episode’s guest star). This show was one of the first (if not the) latina-lead sitcoms on Nickelodeon, and it was super popular until its untimely cancellation, which seems to have been because of behind the scenes drama with recording studio contracts and executive meddling, not because of actual viewership numbers (which were high) or the quality of the show itself. Regardless, this show seems to be right up my alley! I feel like Victorious got a LOT of inspiration from this show.]
