Residual Hauntings
The Difference Between a Residual and Intelligent Haunting We all have heard of a haunting or ghost story, but did you know that there are different types? Looking at the most common ghost stories, it is normally an apparition of a human, animal, or vehicle. The apparition appears and just as quickly disappears without explanation, but now and then the story becomes a bit scarier when the…

Tolgate ghost of Michell’s Pass – Ceres The Old Tollhouse, a thatched, whitewashed, two-roomed cottage, shaded by some huge oaks at the side of the road a few kilometers to Ceres, was built shortly after the completion of Michell’s Pass and is rumored to be the home to mysterious ghost. From 1 January 1849 the tollkeeper lived and worked there, day in and out before closing due to the earthquake. After renovations new several tenants used and lived in this building. In December 1990 a Ceres resident, Mrs. Lynette Bosman, took it over and turned it into a tea-room and craft shop. Although Mrs. Lynette Bosman dreaded going to the shop at night, she found the building to be very lonely and giving her a very weird and uncomfortable feeling.    What made it even worse, was the way the burglar alarm used to keep going off in the middle of the night, for no explicable reason. What made this weird, was that if the reason for the alarm going off, was due to a real break-in, the alarm bell would ring continuously, in the control room in Ceres.  But on those occasions, this was not the case. The alarm would only bell once! The security company’s control room staff was baffled.   No solution or explanation could ever be found for this.  They investigated, from electrical faults to mice, with no results.  With the only explanation left, it must be a ghost. “But who’s? In 2009 former it opened as the Tolhuis Bistro. Operating longer hours, the Tolhuis Bistro team started to encounter the ghost of a young Victorian lady roaming the property, which they lovingly named Nellie.   Could the ghost be of some long-forgotten traveller; footprints dented in time. When I went to investigate the now empty cottage, I found it dislocated, but not totally stripped nor inhabited by any living humans, which was quite odd.  And even though it was daylight, there was a heaviness once inside the building.  Although I didn’t get any concrete evidence, it did make me wonder if the ghostly keeper of the tollgate is still trying to do his job?  Keeping track, and keeping unwanted guests at bay, or maybe just a lonely young lady looking for some company? Tolgate ghost of Michell’s Pass – Ceres, Western Cape
Near the top of Michell’s Pass, just before you reach Ceres in the Western Cape, stand an old toll house nuzzled between big oak trees and rumored to be the home to a mysterious ghost. The Michell’s Pass’s construction, as we know it today, started in 1840 by Andrew Geddes Bain, also known for the construction of Bain’s Kloof pass near Wellington. When it finally opened in 1848, it was named…

St Elmo’s Convent, KwaZulu-Natal. This location situated 10 kilometres from Durban is said to be any ghost hunter's dream. St Elmo’s was erected in stages from 1918 until 1939. It was a Catholic convent used as a retreat for nuns of the Third Order of St Dominic as well as a remedial school for children with learning disabilities.  The Convent was forced to close down in 1994 due to a cut in government subsidies.  If you visit it now you will find it in a dilapidated state in most places.  Almost every window is broken, most of the Oregon pine flooring had been lifted and the building itself was stripped and ironically, someone had written on a dusty window the words: ‘God restore this place” Allegedly, the place is possessed by the spirits of a former priest and nun who refuse to leave. Entering at night, visitors have been confronted with unexplained footsteps, objects falling and heavy breathing.  When a group of friends dared to venture to the convent a couple of years ago, they stood before a closed door, and when they entered the room it suddenly turned very cold, as every hair on the back of their neck stood up. They immediately left. It is also believed that a spirit of a child still haunts the grounds. Even in South-Africa. I was told of to hellhound chasing people of old Bridge. Red eyed and all. The Hellhound has been seen several times throughout history, and it is not specific to any one place, but they are commonly associated with graveyards and the underworld. The most recent sightings occurred in Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, and Vilseck, Germany, in or near cemeteries. A hellhound is a supernatural dog in folklore. A wide variety of ominous or hellish supernatural dogs occur in mythologies around the world. Myths & Legends While considered a bad omen, the hellhound has often helped many as well. The supernatural dog was said to warn people of danger and protect them when they needed it. The dog is often very loyal to those who call upon one and is said to be very watchful. While the creatures are often known as evil, they are not as evil as one would suggest. For example, the Welsh "Cwn Annwn" (Hounds of the Welsh Underworld) were actually believed to be benign. However, encountering them was still considered a sign of imminent death. Omen of Death Seeing a hellhound or hearing one howl may be an omen or even a cause of death. Hellhounds are called "The Bearers of Death" because they were supposedly created by ancient demons to serve as heralds of death. According to legend, seeing one leads to a person's Guardians and Gatekeepers They often get assigned to guard the entrances to the world of the dead, such as graveyards and burial grounds or undertake other duties related to the afterlife or the supernatural, like protection a tear in our reality. #hauntedhistory  #hauntedhistoryofsouthafrica #hauntedrsa #haunteddestinations #haunteddestinationsSoutAfrica #strangerthanfiction #haunted #paranormal  #ghost #spooky #ghosts #scary #paranormalinvestigation #ghosthunting #haunting #spirits #hauntedplaces #ghoststories #supernatural #abandoned #spirit #ghostadventures #paranormalinvestigator  Credit: Credit: Myths & Folklore Wiki https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb9VHPvsn9O/?utm_medium=tumblr

Greenpoint Lighthouse Arguably one of the most recognizable landmarks in Cape Town, the red-and-white striped Green Point lighthouse dates back to the 1800’s, and with it’s historical significance comes hearsay of ghost stories and paranormal activity that’s swirled around for generations. The story goes that the lighthouse was once guarded by a lighthouse keeper named W.S West who disappeared for reasons unknown. However, his spirit still roams around the tower as a one-legged figure called ‘Daddy West’ – it said that his voice can be heard echoing along the tower walls late night. In 2014, the Cape Town Paranormal Investigations Unit went on an expedition to the lighthouse and came back with this recording of a demonic voice, which supposedly provides some concrete evidence to the rumours. #haunted #hauntedhistory #hauntedhistoryofsouthafrica #GreenpointLighthouseghosy #capetownghost #capetownhauntings #Ghost #haunting #paranormal Credit:CapeTownetc (at Green Point, Western Cape, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb2TXrCjAhF/?utm_medium=tumblr

South African Gallows This area known as Gallows Hill - the current site of the Cape Town Traffic department - which was then a chalky rise about 20 feet high, got its name from the gallows that was put there, high on the hill. This was to warn all the accupant of ships entering Cape Town harbor, not to make trouble. An early 18th century map actually shows the gallows and two small crosses at the foot of the dune closest to the town. The official gallows later become the site of Pretoria Federal Prison, where between 1902 and 1989, more than 2949 prisoners were executed, most for the crime of murder. Out of the 2949, 14 women were executed between 1959 & 1989 of which, the serial killer Daisy De Melker, who murder her 2 husbands and her son, was probably the most infamous. It's is rumored that Daisy de Melker still haunts her previous residence. I would love to know what ghost roams the Cape Town Traffic department? #southafricangallows #capetownghost #hauntedhistory  #hauntedhistoryofsouthafrica #hauntedrsa #haunteddestinations #haunteddestinationsSoutAfrica #strangerthanfiction #haunted #paranormal  #ghost #spooky #ghosts #scary #hauntedhouse #creepy #paranormalactivity #paranormalinvestigation #ghosthunting #haunting #spirits #hauntedplaces (at Green Point, Western Cape, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CabpPc-MdYS/?utm_medium=tumblr

Haunted Rust en Vreugde - Cape Town This historical dwelling from the 1700’s was built as the residence of Pieter Noodt, a much disliked govender of the Dutch East India Company and today functions as an art gallery and museum. Visitors often receive a few guests themselves, reportedly feeling a tap on their shoulder, but seeing no one behind them once they turn around. Other guests hear footsteps or sometimes see a floating woman in a long dress lingering between rooms on the ground floor, while another woman can be seen glaring down at guests from an upstairs window with an empty cot beside her. It is also reported that dogs take a great disliking to the portrait of Lord Charles Somerset, a British Govenor who also previously lived at Rust en Vreugd, and repeatedly snarl at his painting. #RustEnVreugdghost #hauntedhistory  #hauntedhistoryofsouthafrica #hauntedrsa #haunteddestinations #haunteddestinationsSoutAfrica #strangerthanfiction #haunted #paranormal  #ghost #spooky #ghosts #scary #hauntedhouse #creepy #paranormalactivity #paranormalinvestigation #ghosthunting #haunting #spirits #hauntedplaces #ghoststories #ghosthunters #supernatural #spirit #ghostadventures #haunt #paranormalinvestigator  #ghosthunter   (at Cape Town, Western Cape) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaZAr68MEfl/?utm_medium=tumblr

Ghost Motorcycle of Mitchells Plain, Cape Town Some say he’s headless, others say he’s completely clad in black, but many Mitchells Plain residents will vouch for the existence of the ghost motorcycle on Spine Road, which cuts its way through Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha right through to Blue Downs. The part of the road in question is a bridge, bordered by the Mitchells Plain subsections of Portlands, Tafelsig as well as Spine Road High School. Legend has it that on Friday nights, just after midnight, a phantom motorcycle speeds over the bridge. Not many have seen him, they say he moves too fast, but on a quiet, windless night, he can be heard speeding by. The strange thing is that the motorcycle never stops accelerating, they say: you hear it work through the gears and then accelerating at a high speed, engine whining. But it’s as if he never gets off the bridge, no matter how fast he goes. The myth is linked to a true story about a motorcycle rider who, speeding down Spine Road on a Harley Davidson, crashed at the foot of the bridge, and died. #hauntedhistory  #hauntedhistoryofsouthafrica #hauntedrsa #haunteddestinations #haunteddestinationsSoutAfrica #strangerthanfiction #haunted #paranormal  #ghost #spooky #ghosts #scary #hauntedhouse #creepy #paranormalactivity #paranormalinvestigation #ghosthunting #haunting #spirits #hauntedplaces #ghoststories #ghosthunters #supernatural #abandoned #spirit #ghostadventures #haunt #paranormalinvestigator  #photography #ghosthunter Credit: Cape Town Magazine (at Mitchells Plain) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ2GXIOs87a/?utm_medium=tumblr

GHOST OF CAPE TOWN - Hout Bay Kitima Restaurant is a tidy Hout Bay Asian eatery situated on The Kronendal, a 17th century former Dutch homestead … with a history. Part of that history is Elsa Cloete, a Dutch woman who lived in the homestead in the mid-1800s. Story has it that the young Elsa and a British soldier were madly in love, but her father wouldn’t allow them to see each other. So the young soldier hung himself from a tree, and the young girl died of a broken heart. According to reports from Kitima Restaurant staff, Cloete may be dead, but she isn’t gone. The staff have seen pots fly off wall hooks and lights dim without explanation. Guests have also reported sightings of a spectral female figure in one of the manor windows. The young soldier’s spirit also lives on as guests have reported sightings of a man’s outline lurking between the manor’s oak trees. Out of respect for the doomed lovers, the restaurant sets a table for them with food and wine every night. #hauntedhistory  #hauntedhistoryofsouthafrica #hauntedrsa #haunteddestinations #haunteddestinationsSoutAfrica #strangerthanfiction #haunted #paranormal  #ghost #spooky #ghosts #scary #hauntedhouse #creepy #paranormalactivity #paranormalinvestigation #ghosthunting #haunting #spirits #hauntedplaces #ghoststories #ghosthunters #supernatural #abandoned #spirit #ghostadventures #haunt #paranormalinvestigator  #photography #ghosthunter (at Hout Bay, Western Cape, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZpFlxRsDVX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Haunted Dolls
Although people are scared of many different things, most would agree that a haunted doll is, at the very least, a bit disturbing if not outright terrifying. So why exactly are some dolls haunted? What characteristics does a haunted doll typically have? How do haunted dolls effect peoples lives?
There are several different reasons as to why a doll can be haunted. The most common reason is because a child or otherwise deceased person’s spirit has become attached to the doll. Whether the doll was a beloved childhood toy or a precious gift, sometimes spirits do not like to let go of their prized possession, and instead possess the doll themselves.
Other times the energy of spirits can become attached to the doll, and although the person themselves is not necessarily possessing the doll knowingly, the energy that they left behind can still cause strange things to happen. Thirdly, sometimes people who have accidentally summoned a demon or spirit from the other-side, via an Ouija board or other mystical ritual, find that they need a way to subdue it. Since sending a demon or spirit back to the other-side is often difficult, some people choose instead to trap the spirit inside of an object, such as a doll. Although this will stop the malevolent being from traveling around, it still maintains all of its powers.
Finally, some spirits become trapped in a doll accidentally. During the Victorian ages it was common for a grieving mother to take a lock from her deceased child’s hair and weave it into that of a beloved doll. Despite the sweet notion, this caused many spirits to become “stuck” inside of the doll.
So what exactly separates a haunted doll from a normal doll? The answer to this is pretty obvious. Haunted dolls have been known to do everything from walking around on their own, changing positions without anyone touching them, following a person with their eyes as they move about a room, laughing on their own, and talking. Several owners of haunted dolls have reported hearing footsteps emanating from the dolls room when no one else was around, or seeing the doll peering at them from out a window when driving by.
