Grian to me just has a massive unwarranted guilt complex. He thinks he's a bad person. For killing Scar in thirdlife, for killing Mumbo and Jimmy in lastlife, for "making everyone hate us" (not true) in doublelife, for accidentally killing Bigb in doublelife.
Of course, he's just playing the same game as everyone else is. But he acts like there's a unique shameful evil behind his own role. Like he alone deserves contempt for what he's done.
And for that, he often tries to isolate himself. But the thing is; he gets lonely. He can't bear to be without other people. He needs the warmth and kindness of others, and without it, he feels like he can't breathe. So he seeks out love, and for that, he feels even more guilt.
The key is, though, that this self loathing is unwarranted. He deserves companionship. He deserves forgiveness. He already has it from the people he thinks he's hurt most (they're playing the same game he is, they hold no grudge). But he deserves it even more from himself, and he rarely gets that.

Top tier Desert Duo angst to me is:
1.) You are my sun. You are my earth. We were meant to orbit each other in every lifetime, and I'm sorry the universe pulls us apart.
2.) I'm sorry my blood dirties your hands. I'm sorry I spilled your blood onto myself. I'm sorry for taking from you. I'm sorry for making you unclean. I'm sorry I can't see why you don't blame me.
3.) Do you know what I am? I'm sorry.
4.) Stop apologizing. I love you.

All I'm saying is that there's an inherent horror and guilt behind losing your humanity through a transformation into one of the emotional parasites who trapped all your friends in an endless death game. Especially when nobody else seems to remember you as anything but an intruding figure who isn't supposed to be here.

The most simple test I use to see if I'm writing any life series character ooc or not is by asking myself whether I can see this character, putting all angst aside, just sitting down with the other life series members and genuinely laughing about something, and if the answer is no, I need to rework some things.

Headcanon that half the hermits wear falconer gloves at all times because Grian loves perching on them constantly.

Grian is clingy in every universe. He likes having people to lean on and gets very lonely very easily.
This works out fine on Hermitcraft. There's always someone around to cuddle up to or banter with or just spent time beside. It's genuinely impossible to ever be starved of attention on Hermitcraft, because affection and attention are given out freely.
On the life series it's different. On the life series you'll find someone who's willing to hold your hands only for them to die in front of your eyes. On the life series you can try to banter with someone and end up with a sword through your chest. On the life series it's possible to be rejected, to be betrayed, to be lonely.
Grian is a clingy person. But he knows better than to touch and trust freely on the life series. He knows what it's like to sit alone in an empty base and long for people. He knows what it's like to be touch starved in the worst ways.
On Hermitcraft, his need for attention and affection is nice, because there's no shortage of either wherever you turn. On the Life Series, it's a curse, one that leads him to make foolish decisions out of desperation and loneliness.

I've talked about this before with Desert Duo but I feel like they aren't the only ones who have their characters and dynamics warped a ton for angst.
I feel like people keep trying to warp every relationship into like two types of angsty trope and just, like, stretching out the characters involved until they fit the trope but may not fit their actual personalities or dynamic.
You can make the Life Series, or even Hermitcraft angsty. I like some forms of Life Series or Hermitcraft angst. I've seen it done well. But if you take away all of the joy and whimsy and banter and love, what do you have left of the Life Series or Hermitcraft in your angst?
Again, my main experience with this is Desert Duo since I'm most insane about them, primarily through seeing fans make Grian in specific (sometimes both of them) a fucked up toxic abusive mess that means a lot of Desert Duo content kinda loses the Grian and Scar after a while and becomes Generic Codependent Couple #9726.
But I've seen this done to other characters too where they're dumbed down and made less competent, turned into hyper toxic caricatures of themselves, or stripped of personality completely to fit into another pairings angst scene. And I just. Don't like it.

Do Scar and Grian need THREE duo names? No. Am I now in love with "Peskytimes" and going to tag it on everything? Yes.

I think the thing I really love about Desert Duo is the warmth between them.
The way they banter and poke and prod at each other but always with an undercurrent of fondness. Scar teases about Grian's secret soulmate, Grian huffs that his heart is for someone special, Scar whispers with Pearl about ideas to mess with their soulmates, Grian mutters about leaving the desert all season. They both stay. They both giggle together and quickly drop any faux hurt.
The way they play each other. Scar coaxes Grian into doing work for him, Grian snatches a life away from Scar, Scar practically robs Grian blind through 'fair trade', Scar stabs Grian in the back in Thirdlife, Grian stabs Scar in the back in Limited Life. It's all in good fun. They sigh and roll their eyes and smile.
The way they gravitate towards each other. Easily partnering in Thirdlife, dancing around an alliance in both Last Life and Limited Life, being paired by the universe in Double Life, trying to reach for each other only to be torn apart by the universe in Secret Life. They meld easily together, like whispered plans and a presence beside each other is the most natural thing in the world.
The way they understand each other. "You and me, we know monopolies" Scar says, and Grian smiles. "Why DON'T you come along with me?" Grian giggles, and Scar can breathe for the first time all session.
Can you guys HEAR me I'm so NORMAL-

Anyways, I might take a break from being on here. I haven't even watched Wilbur in years, I don't make content for him, I'm not particularly personally affected by the breakdown of the community, but I'm still going to take some time because my mental health has been affected by the victim blaming and tone policing posts I've seen on my dash and how they've triggered and negatively impacted me as an abuse survivor. God, we need to be better about how we react to abuse. All my love, guys, I'll see you when I'm feeling better.

Okay I know I said I wouldn't post anything else about it, but genuinely, if you find it appropriate to victim blame, deny, tone police, or insult an abuse victim, unfollow and block me. I've seen some absolutely vile takes on here and I want nothing to do with the people making them. I get it's hard to process someone you looked up to being a bad person, but if his closest friends can put that aside to support his victim, so can you.
For everyone else, stay safe and take care of yourself, take a break if you need, there are some awful things being said about victims right now and if it's triggering or harmful to you it's okay to step back.
