During World War II, the Bulgarian King avoided handing over Bulgarian Jews to German concentration camps, despite being allied with Hitler. Today, the largest Sephardic synagogue is lavishly decorated with Venetian mosaic and a multi-tiered chandelier, imbued with the symbolism of number 8. . While the communists shunned religion, they avoided destroying sacred sites. The temple of Nike Athena is my favorite building on Athens’ #Acropolis. It sits outside the Acropolis walls, angled towards the southwest, breaking from the rigid orthogonal symmetry of the #Propylaea—a rogue temple flying forth ahead of the main sanctuary to greet visitors ascending the grand staircase. . It was a temple to the goddess Nike, or victory, and announces the glory of Athens and it’s prowess over the classical world. . Its proportions and details are petite, yet refined. The Ionic capitals and crumbled frieze are the only remaining decoration.
