Just about anywhere podcasts are hosted, but I recommend either Spotify or the Rusty Quill YouTube channel
Tumblr media
This a podcast, so the character in question has no Canon visual appearance. Regardless, I want to talk about my favorite monster from The Magnus Archives, Simon Fairchild.
The Magnus Archives has these things called the entities, the fears, etc, and they represent and feed on the sum total of all human fear. Some humans serve these powers that be and gain abilities as a result.
Simon Fairchild is one of them, serving the entity known as The Vast, which represents our fear of large open spaces, falling, and our own insignificance in the universe. His demeanor reflects that, not caring about most things in life because it's ultimately meaningless. Despite my mentions of his servitude, I'd call him a monster for the things he's done

How awfully tragic. My heart goes out to this poor fool
Tumblr media
One of the few npcs in the game Dead By Daylight is the Observer.
He claims to be a survivor who managed to avoid the trials faced by others, used by The Entity to gather food out of suffering. Instead being able to use his mental ability to form a tower to keep himself save.
At first his ability to avoid the games seems to give him free will from the entity, however he is trapped in the very tower meant to keep him safe and he does nothing but watch the memories of those who did not escape the trials as their souls are slowly worth away. He suffers with the knowledge that he is unable to help them.
despite all his power his is still a cog in The Entity’s design, a gubernete in the cybernetic system.

Manga is just a term to refer to comic books of Japanese origin. They're... surprisingly easy to pirate, but a subscription to Shonen Jump is literally $2.99
Tumblr media
I’ve been reading this relatively new manga called Kaiju No. 8, and it’s pretty interesting. going purely by terms discussed in class, it’s the story of a man who has to regularly hide his “filthiness” from his friends and family. He lives in a world where “Kaiju”, giant monsters, are a regular threat, and an unknown incident gives him the ability to switch between his original human form, and the form of a creature the Kaiju Defense Force refers to as Kaiju No. 8

It's funny, the last two pictures are actually from the Neo Metal Sonic incident, and these forms haven't reappeared since.
Metal primarily fights with high speed close quarters combat. The spines serve more to impersonate his primary target for destruction, Sonic the Hedgehog
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don’t mind me, just posting the best sonic character ever.
Metal Sonic is weird because it frequently switches between Monster and robot as far as behavior goes. more often than not, however, it’s a robot. There was the time it rebelled against it’s creator and became Neo Metal Sonic, but it hasn’t done much rebellious activity since the main cast defeated it that time.

I actually have a friend that’s obsessed with vampires, so I ended up knowing a lot through osmosis. how do you think lugosi’s dracula stands against the more modern takes, like Castlevania’s version?
Tumblr media
Been watching alot of films recently related to one of hollywoods most iconic characters, Dracula. All of the interpretations of him are great examples of monsters who cross boundaries and perform rituals but my favorite will always be Bela Lugosi’s version from the 1930s. He had all of the creeps that Nosferatu (the original german dracula) had while having a certain charm and charisma like the Gary Oldman version. Truly one of a kind.

ALBERT

WESKER
When I tell you I can't stand this jerk. He's a monster through and through. Since his first appearance in the Resident Evil franchise, he has been working to change the world around him for the worse.
He deals exclusively in B.O.W.s, bio-organic weapons, to the point of becoming one himself. He violates the social boundary between human and beast, straddling the line like a child sitting on a tree branch.

I haven't talked robots yet, so let's look at Atlas' top war machine, Penny Polendina from the web series RWBY.
She's meant to be based off the story of Pinnochio, so her entire character arc is about what it mens to be a "real girl". She has proven time and again to have a mind of her own, and real emotions. she even has an aura, which in the RWBY universe is proof of the existence of a soul.
It's reached the point where the only thing making her different from a human is physical make up and combat ability.

You look at that and tell me you don’t see the heart of evil.
Eveline from the game Resident Evil 7 has got to be a monster. She controls mold! filthy

The Tragedy of Demons
!SPOILERS FOR DEMON SLAYER, PROCEED WITH CAUTION!
One of my favorite manga series was a story created by Koyoharu Gotōge for Weekly Shonen Jump called Demon Slayer. It, alongside two other series that aren’t important right now, kicked off the era of Shueisha publishing darker, more mature stories to their line up of young boys manga. Demon Slayer tackles the concepts of loss, betrayal, and even the radicalization of youths to harmful ideologies. Moreso than anything though, Demon Slayer handles the ideas of spite and hatred for your fellow man very well.
No other character in the series emphasizes this more than the two demons Kokushibo and Kaigaku, The First and Sixth Upper Moon respectively.
Let it be known that in every manner we consider them, these two are undoubtably Monsters. This particular post, however, will pay an extra special bit of attention to Mary Douglas’ writing on the power rituals have over our minds when disorder is in play, as hatred can be seen as a disorder of the mind. we begin with the lesser of the two hateful beasts The Sixth of The Six Upper Demon Moons, Kaigaku.
Tumblr media
Kaigaku’s hatred is something that wasn’t initially as deep as one would think. Before becoming a demon, he was a Demon Slayer in-training, learning how to utilize the sword art known as Thunder Breathing alongside a fellow student named Zenitsu, under a famous Samurai. due to past events, Kaigaku was under the belief that strength and the power to survive were the only things worth respecting in life, and he stuck with that throughout his training. Imagine the disorder brought to his life when he found that his fellow student was not only a weakling, but a talentless one at that. Imagine the further disorder to his mind when the teacher still treated them as equals, and even considered both of them to be his heir.
While out killing demons, Kaigaku is backed into a corner by a particularly powerful demon, and in-line with his belief that survival was above all, asked it to turn him into a demon too. this is where he crosses the boundary between demons and slayers, one that is meant to divide righteous and selfish killers.
His turning from human to demon is essentially Kaigaku’s equivalent to a ritual as described by Douglas, abandoning common sense to find powers and truths which cannot be reached by conscious effort. willingly rejecting your own humanity and becoming a man eating monster definitely does this.
I started with kaigaku’s story because it leans into the next one. The demon that turned Kaigaku was none other than the second demon we’ll discuss, The First Upper Moon Kokushibo.
Tumblr media
Kokushibo is, for all intents and purposes, the more evil of the two demons. Where Kaigaku became a demon mostly as a survival tactic, with his hate for zenitsu being more a motivating afterthought, Kokushibo turned purely out of jealousy and hatred towards his brother Yoriichi, the first Demon Slayer.
Growing up, Kokushibo was learning how to wield a sword, while his twin brother yoriichi was isolated from the rest of the family. Kokushibo would visit him out of pity, and practice the sword while his younger twin watched. eventually, a servant of the family that knew how to use the sword decided to teach Yoriichi a basic stance. Yoriichi would immediately land four blows on the man, who Kokushibo couldn’t even hit once. Yoriichi would go on to invent the various sword styles known as breathing techniques, which Kokushibo eventually learned alongside his brother.
But after an incident where Yoriichi could only save Kokushibo from demons and not the rest of his men, his hatred towards Yoriichi would only grow. Not because of who he lost, but who he lost to. He couldn’t stand being weakerthan his brother. It made him feel like filth. I mean that in the Douglas way too. he felt so insignificant in comparison to his brother that he basically felt out of place in the world of samurai, like pursuing yoriichi’s path would be trespassing in a higher being’s territory.
So he too went to the ritual. He actively sought the original demon from which all others came from, Kibutsuji Muzan, and requested to become a demon. In his mind, this was the only way. Discarding not only his humanity, but the rest of his brother’s bloodline for the sake of power.
These two are the epitome of the idea that order can only be brought through strength, and that anything they hate is “disorderly”. In their attempts to fix perceived wrongs, they went down evil paths that ultimately lead to their deaths at the hands of powerful demon slayers centuries later

What's Digimon?
Its... a lot. An entire franchise that I a bit too big to get into in one Tumblr post
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thinking about how absolutely ridiculous yet menacing most Digimon designs are. This is a good example. NeoDeviMon is definitely a monster, and an unrepentant one at that

Battle Angel Alita is a franchise, consisting of Three Manga series and a Movie
Let’s Start off Right
I knew that if I wanted to really get into this blogging initiative, I’d have to begin with a topic I’m really passionate about. That’s why today, I’ll be talking about my absolute favorite cyborg in the entire world
Tumblr media
The so-called “Battle Angel”. Though known as Gally in Japan, we western viewers know her as Alita.
Let’s start off with the obvious stuff. Alita is a cyborg in the most literal sense, to the most extreme degree possible. The only part of her that is still completely organic is her brain, and as a result, she’s had numerous different bodies over the course of her story
I personally believe that the themes of her story and her personality strongly align Alita with Timothy Leary’s concept of the Cyber-Punk, the strange outsider individual that thinks completely independent of societal factors. The stubborn hero that won’t take no for an answer when it comes to saving people. Leary states that The Cyber Punk usually combines bravery with high curiosity, with super-self-esteem.
Alita matches this entire description perfectly, and it’s first shown through her own stubborn nature. at the beginning of the story, she’s found in a junkyard by a man who she later finds out is a bounty hunter, and immediately decides to be a bounty hunter herself. Despite the protests of her guardian, she refuses to back down, even signing up with the association in charge of hunters behind his back.
Alita also has the curiosity part in spades, since when she was first found, she had no memories of her past or even a name. her caretaker gave her the name she currently uses. Her first fight reminds her of something from her past, and from then on her overarching goal is a dogged pursuit of her past, leading to the various smaller plots she goes through involving finding love, working for a shadow government, and starting and ending multiple revolutions.
The quintessential trait of the Cyber Punk is that it is a Prometheus figure. Every one of Leary’s examples brought something to the societies they graced with their presence. In Alita’s case, that’s hope. She has proven time and again to be the walking embodiment of the power hope for the future can have. whether it was through suddenly understanding her new bodies through sheer determination or saving a city with just words.
