For sure! Gonna put this under a “keep reading” because it’s rather long and also has some explicit definitions as well, but hopefully this helps! I made this guide a while back, but I think it’s up-to-date enough to understand💛

A/B/O Basics Guide

Disclaimer: All of these definitions and explanations are generalized across fics I’ve read and written. There’s absolutely a lot of non-traditional omegaverse content nowadays and we love diversity and mixing things up!!

Alphas/betas/omegas: the three main categories for secondary genders

Alphas: most dominant/aggressive, tend to be extremely protective and possessive, strong sense of smell and usually have more masculine traits/muskier scents

Betas: basically normal humans with genders that typically align with their primary one, usually have less ability to notice scents

Omegas: usually the weakest and most docile of the three, protective and possessive, but not as feral or aggressive unless their kids or mate are threatened, tend to have more feminine traits/soft scents

**Male/female/transgender/NB/gender-fluid/queer people, etc. still exist, but secondary genders tend to dictate treatment by society and status in omegaverse***

Pups: a way to refer to children or babies. Omegas tend to be very protective of them, even if it’s not their biological child

Scenting: done between pack members/mates to signify belonging and affection. Usually involves rubbing on wrists or necks (where scent glands are) to put your scent on them. Can be done for comforting someone or to mark them as yours

Biting: another way of claiming, like scenting. Usually done between mates, but like in general A/B/O fics tends to be very bite heavy because it involves a lot of primal/prey dynamics

Chirping/purring/growling: noises that omegas and alphas make out of instinct. Chirping is only omegas, usually a response to signify happiness. Purring can be either one. Again, like a noise to show comfort or happiness. Growls tend to be alphas, usually angry or protective, sometimes excited

Nesting: omegas do this for comfort/their heats. Involves putting scented and soft things around them. Maybe clothes from their pack or mate to form a nest/bed. Makes them feel safe and comfortable

Scruffing: generally done by alphas to omegas or pups, grabbing the back of their neck/their scent glands to cause them to calm down and submit

Presentation (Heat/Rut): only happens to omegas/alphas. They get hot and horny. Need to fuck or at least masturbate or it’s unbearable. They get more feral/primal when this happens and there’s not a lot of self control involved. Frequency and duration is up to the writer. Some people make it every few months and usually lasts a few days, but we all change that up. Presentation is when someone has their first heat or rut and it reveals their secondary gender

Suppressants: omegas/alphas sometimes use to lessen their scents/reduce or stop their heats/ruts (I’ve read it as a pill or patch). It’s a useful plot device if someone is hiding their designation for some reason. They won’t be found out as easily if their scent is diminished by them

Mates/bonds: like marriage, but harder or impossible to break. Involves biting the bonding gland on the neck. Two people who do this become mates and sometimes they have more of a connection, like they feel their mate’s emotions or distress afterwards. More protective over them for sure

Omega anatomy/slick: Everyone writes omegas and their anatomy differently, but I write dual-sexed male omegas who have vaginas and smaller cocks (can also be called cocklette/cocklet). Sometimes they have standard cis male genitalia and a self lubricating asshole, depending on the writer. Male omegas can get pregnant. When they get horny, they produce slick that alphas can smell/really like and acts as natural lubricant

Knotting: alphas are able to grow a knot at the base of their penis that swells up and locks them inside their partner when they orgasm. Makes knocking someone up easier

Bitching/studding: this is advanced stuff, but bitching is the process of changing an alpha to an omega. Studding is changing an omega to an alpha. Both methods are done differently and the authors take a lot of liberties in the methodology

Packs: close families/groups of friends. Can be people you’re just associated with that you spend time with and are protective over

Rejection sickness: usually an alpha or omega is interested in a person as their mate and they get rejected by them (intentionally or unintentionally) and it makes them sick. Flu-like symptoms that could even hospitalize them/kill them if they don’t deal with it. Usually involves admitting their feelings to the person who may have rejected them, resolving the issue, or taking medication to treat
