saw someone on instagram say “you shouldn’t post your art until it’s good” and that comment filled me with rage so i want to say to every beginner artist or artist who feels their art is not improving no matter how long they’ve been at it. i love you and i love your art and everything you post bears part of you and that is so beautiful. block everyone who says otherwise they are not entitled to freely consume what they rag on.

art is about spending an embarrassing amount of time trying to get something to look right giving up and then moving on to do it slightly better next time. at some point if you're an exhibitionist you then post it for internet strangers to look at.

I made a vimeo
there's nothing on there except the animations I already posted here but like the quality is a bit better I think
Also it only lets you post 3 at a time with a free account so I'll have to be choosy with the last slot I guess and possibly rotate things as I make more but tbh I'll take that over ads on youtube

the point of art is not to be great but to make it transparently obvious that there is something wrong with you

thank you frRIEND this is such a confidence boost 🥹
ARE Y'ALL FUCKIN READY FOR THIS THING I MADE THAT I WANNA MAKE YOU WATCH
Prepare to be....well....not overwhelmed. Not underwhelmed...more....Satisfactorilywhelmed *drum roll* My first traditionally 2d animated short is done (well. Done enough. Not perfect but it's just an informal practice thing so you know what it's fine for that 🙃) BEHOLD
Sound on for questionable quality keyboard noises
So yeah this is a little experiment I churned out in a month of neglecting other more important projects....it's supposed to be like.....the feeling of slumping into burnout and then the ups and downs of trying to get out of it? does it make sense...?
But yeah basically it's traditional animation - like ink and paint on cels and composited and scanned manually bc it annoys me the mainstream has decided this is an obsolete art form and I'm protesty about it because IT'S ART IT DOESNT BECOME OBSOLETE BC PROGRAMS EXIST DO NOT PASS GO DO NOT COLLECT 200 DOLLARS. I did cheat a little and digitally cut the water and copy-pasted it onto some frames but that's because I could find ONE TRANSPARENT BLUE SHEET IN THE ENTIRE METROPOLITAN AREA I SHIT YOU NOT. and I didn't want to cut my only precious water sheet in case something went wrong or I had to redo a shot. But everything else is pretty manual. Also the music is op 76 no 2 by Sibelius - ATTEMPTED 🙃. Sorry some notes are just SO QUIET but it's good enough it's whatever. My level of piano skill is like. Not professional by any stretch of the imagination and this is good enough for me
Oh and backgrounds are generally various kinds of charcoal with ink
anyway hope you at least found my project interesting thanks for watching
(actually not to make it weird but my whole life has led up to me trying this and I blame Joe Murray for making me want to be an animator when I was a little kid and I always wanted to try this kind and now I finally had the time and money and enough drawing skills to try it so yeah it's not like fuckin Disney or whatever but I am happy I got to make it exist. feels like I checked a thing off my bucket list)

people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.

Preview of some of this animation with an Extremely Rough draft of the background music.....I've never been good at recordings and I didn't magically get better for this 🙃 So it's gonna take some figuring out bc right now I sound like I'm recording in a cavernous toilet AND YOU CAN HEAR EVERY FUCKING KEY PRESS. KEYBOARD PROBLEMS TM. I also without fail make 78 mistakes the second I so much as breathe on the record button so ngl I'm probably just gonna cobble together mistakeless sections. If you want to know the piece it's Op 76 No 2 by Sibelius (which FYI is in the public domain in the US - where I live. I dont think there are any public domain RECORDINGS though so thats why i decided to just tackle it myself rip wish me luck) BUT IF YOU LOOK IT UP YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED IN ME LET'S GET THAT OUT OF THE WAY I AM NOT A REAL PIANIST BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION

I'm curious. what job would you do if money was no object (you just automatically had an income you could live comfortably on)? including work like volunteering, studying etc. please share in the tags :)

HEY do you guys want to know about my supplies
too bad you're going to anyway
Tumblr media
the paints I'm using are these
Tumblr media
I also got their 10f transparent cels. I had some cels laying around from cartoonsupplies.com but the chromacolour ones are WAY better quality. All this shit will cost you (especially if you're like me and half to ship it halfway around the damn globe) but it's generally worth it I think. I ALMOST look like I know what I'm doing XD
Tumblr media
For lines everything sucks ass. This shitty waterproof ink you can get at your local Shitty Overpriced Neighborhood CVS Of Craftstores (aka. Michaels) is the only thing that sticks reliably and yes I am using an obnoxious little dip pen with it but I don't know where the fuck that is rn (I have one more shot to I so here's hoping I figure it out)
Tumblr media
Oh yeah you'll want some brushes. I got some pointy ones and some flat square ones designed for acrylic and gouache. The cel paint behaves like thin acrylic paint so these work best. god help you if they're not dry
Tumblr media
don't forget your cartoon character white gloves so you don't get finger prints on all the cels
"Hey ej quick question what the fuck do I do with all this"
glad you asked I will probably make another post about that. And about backgrounds which for me are an entirely separate animal

Well I didn't end up being able to add more in betweens because I just straight up ran out of cels 🙃 and I'm not going to fork over 150 bucks for another pack rn so......I mean whatever you get the idea. Guy running up trippy floating stairs. Getting close to being done with this short.
as for why all the shit I do looks Like This TM like I'm going for the opposite feeling of Disney I have this to say abt my influences

does anyone want to see a progression of a clip from rough to final?
here's a tiny digestible clip of my animation showing like the rough pencils and then the better pencils and then the ink/paint
That background is a bit wobbly I know ugh it's bc I'm doing this on a scanner and I basically have to place it every single frame and it's hard to get it in the same spot. I may do a little nudging digitally or I might just declare that MY ARTISTIC LICENSE SAYS IT ADDS CHARACTER and leave it idk
Also once again the frame rate is like "fuck you what frame rate" bc this shit is expensive
