hot take but Steve Harrington has one of the best male character arcs that I’ve seen in modern tv

A variety of things that Steve has been through that have changed his character and provoked a change in his ideas of the world, along with a few actions that have reflected who he is as a character.

- if you are all wondering, I have just been analyzing Steve a lot recently and these are just some things I’ve learned or noticed about Steve. This is the way I portray him on my roleplay account and is the basis to how I display his character in fanfics and roleplays. If you have different views on Steve please be kind and do not leave any hate.

TRIGGER WARNING; brief mention of suicide and many mentions of slut shamming, minor mentions of ptsd

*SEASON THREE SPOILERS ARE ALSO IN THIS DOCUMENT*

And the list begins

As we all know, in season one, we see Steve destroy Jonathan Byers camera. Now, at the time most of the fandom dismissed it as an act of cruelty against the other student. Although, in reality it’s the opposite. Jonathan had captured a photo of a girl half naked without consent Nancy was also a MINOR at the time and this must not have been legal. So why do I say this is so important? Well, Steve had recognized that what Jonathan had done was wrong and could be consider sexual harrsament and might have even been humiliating towards Nancy. Then once he did recognize what was wrong with what happened, he proceeded to show Jonathan that taking photos of naked woman without consent is wrong. He did so by ripping the photo and throwing it to the ground, which I feel is completely warranted in a situation like this. Ripping the photo was meant to symbolize and show that Jonathan had no right to do what he’d done, Steve was protecting Nancy and that’s really all. But then, it proceeds to show Steve break Jonathan’s camera. Now this, this was to far. But if you watch he instantly has a feeling of remorse! He literally feels so guilty that he had to leave the scene and change the conversation topic, so, even in season one, Steve had shown that he truly was a good person who would do anything for his friends.

The “Nancy The Slut” sign scene, now this ones pretty self explanatory. But we see a man cleaning the sign at the local movie theatre with the words “Nancy the slut wheeler” in huge red letters on the sign, when suddenly Steve comes walking up, still with a black eye and a swollen lip. Now, I would not blame Steve for being angry with Nancy at this exact moment and not wanting to help clean the sign, after all, she had been talking to Jonathan while still dating him! But instead of being mad, he offers to help clean it. This not only shows his respect towards Nancy, but also the property of other people! This overall just shows how Steve, even if nobody noticed in the beginning showed signs of having true respect towards other people even when he had no clear reason to do so.

The car scene where Steve tells Tommy H and Carol “Carol for once in your life, shut the hell up”, now this one is relatively deep but not to terribly much. In this scene Tommy and carol had been speaking about Nancy and how she had sex with Steve and how she was also talking to Jonathan at the time. This could be considered slut shaming and it’s just cruel to speak about how somebody acts during sex, especially since these kids are in HIGH SCHOOL. That’s right, high school! In high school sex is an important thing and could be the reason for discrimitory names such as “slut, whore, prude, tease, etc,” which is also a cause of many suicides in teenagers. during the scene, Steve seemingly just snaps. This could be overlooked as him just being annoyed with his friends behavior, But this is also a relatively good judge of character, showing that Steve understands that slut shaming even under these circumstances is wrong. It also shows how he is trying incredibly hard to be supportive of somebody who was most definetly not cool at that point in time, this is just an incredibly respectful thing to do and shows Steve slowly changing into somebody other than an asshole popular kid. Finally, it shows courage within Steve that many teenagers don’t have as standing up to your peers (especially your friends) is an extremely scary thing to do that takes a lot of bravery and strength.

The scene where Steve shows up at the Byer house, now I feel like this could go either way. Nobody really knew Steve’s true intention on going to the Byers house, but by the way you hear steve speaking, it makes it seem as if he is there to apologize for the fight between him and Jonathan, because in a way, Steve had been in the wrong when interrogating the fight with Jonathan. This simply shows that Steve can comprehend what he has done wrong in his past and is willing to apologize for his actions unlike many typical teenagers.

The train track scene, now this one isn’t to much of a judge of character, more something I just feel represents him as a person. Steve had been talking to dustin about girls and hair when he reveals the hair product he uses, this was a simple act of kindness towards dustin that really shifted Steve’s character, it was a huge turning point in my opinion and was the beginning of Steve becoming the character we all now know and love. Also, in this scene Steve brings up dustin being to “young for that shit.” This only really shows that Steve is trying to look out for dustin and only wants the best for the kid, it just kinda shows that he’s actually kind of a nice guy.

The demogorgan scene(I probably spelt that wrong, oop-), but basically this is the scene when max is under that thing and is nearly attacked. Steve jumps right on in to save the day, shoving max out of the way and potentially sacrificing his own life. This must have took immense bravery and is incredibly notable, seeming as Steve is willing to die for the safety of others.

“you’re dead.””NO YOU ARE!”, i feel like this is a major plot point in Steve’s storyline, Steve was just trying to defend the kids and I feel like that is just a really really good thing to do.

(SEASON THREE SPOILER) The talk in the bathroom with robin, not only does Steve reveal that he truly loved Nancy, but he also openly supports robin when she says that she is into girls and not guys. I feel as if in this time period, gay rights were only just becoming a thing and homophobia was still unusually high. So it’s incredible how accepting he is of robins sexuality (we love a lgbtq+ ally 🤭). This is one of the scenes that made me fall in love with his character as well, as he describes how he felt throughout his whole high school career and how he feels as though popularity is not everything and how he wishes he could have been different so he could be doing special with his life.

The majority of season two, season two was Steve’s character development prime. I feel as though this must have changed his life and his ideas on what people are actually like, in season two we see Steve beginning to change majorly. He starts loosing all his friends for Nancy, causing him to feel all alone (I use this in roleplays sometimes, claiming it’s his worst nightmare come true as I envision Steve as having a fear of abandonment and isolation) but also in this season, Nancy leaves him for Jonathan. He’s completely alone after this and only has Dustin, which I believe truly did change his views on the world since he literally lost EVERYTHING and by that, I mean his whole life. He no longer had friends, his grades were down the drain, his parents were never home. He was all alone. This must have struck change in him, it’s what makes me love him so much.

(SEASON THREE SPOILERS) the battle of star court must have been a HUGE shifting point for him, all of season three we see him fighting against the Russians beside his best friends. Being in a battle like this is almost like being at war and must have changed him in some way shape or form, although season four has yet to come out I would like to assume that this has given him some form of ptsd, which leads me into the next thing that provoked change in his life.

(SEASON THREE SPOILERS) this kid was DRUGGED, he was fucking drugged by a bunch of grown ass man who were forcing information out of him that he didn’t even have! This must have been a terrifying thing to have been put through, hell, he’s still practically a kid. He’s only 18, being put through military interrogation procedures where he gets the living shit beat out of him and where he was given drugs. Luckily, dustin does save him. But he still went through it. This must have been a huge change and might have even caused ptsd.

(SEASON THREE SPOILERS) Steve sacrificed himself for dustin and Erica, while running from the Russians he slams the door shut and holds it shut, then proceeds to yell go at them. This just shows the true courage Steve has and gives me mad respect for him.

(SEASON THREE SPOILERS) in season three he wins his first fight! Pretty cool right? I think so, this must have made him feel so good about himself. His whole life, Steve has been put down, ever since the beginning of season one this poor guys life has been a series of loosing friends, getting beat up and still trying to do what he felt was right. So, finally he wins something, even if it is just a simple fight, this most likely boosted his self esteem and made the years of loosing a bit less bad. This was probably a shifting point where Steve realizes that if he just has enough bravery and heart to do something, he may truly succeed.
