Thinking about Black Sails S3 where Flint shoots the two members of his crew accused of stealing rations, and Billy and Silver (and everyone really) is going on about how cold and heartless and RUTHLESS and unfeeling Flint is and how they need to stop him.. And then we cut to the absolute masterclass in acting that Toby Stephens gives us where Flint slowly locks himself in his cabin, sets the gun down so so so carefully, and then slumps against the wall, caving in on himself, as he starts to sob uncontrollably but so so quietly... Black Sails is A Show

black sails really said this story is about the stories and stories are about ghosts and ghosts are those we've loved and the love is the story and the story is a choice

Happy Halloween! Am I the only one thinking about if James were around for a Halloween, and he saw all the little kids dressed up as pirates and monsters and otherworldly creatures, what would he think?
I just think about him as Captain Flint meeting Abigail and so terrified of being seen. But then on halloween everyone who approaches him is like, cool costume, and he is so confused.
And then in a completely different train of thought, I like to imagine Thomas and James handing out Halloween candy and Thomas just gives him a knowing look every time a kid is dressed as a pirate comes to their door. James never responds but always gives those kids his favorite candy.

One thing Black Sails did so good imo is that it always makes me question about what I would have done if I were Silver in the finale. Would I have made the decision to protect the people I love despite having to betray them? Would I have respected their decisions and freedom and risk their life when I knew I could save them? What is more important for me, freedom or knowing that they're safe, even if they might hate me?
I don't know. I like to think that I would have chosen to let them make their own decision, but being in his position maybe i would have chosen to save them, especially with his background, we know that in his past there have been unspeakable horrors, i can understand him not wanting to lose more people. On the other hand though I don't think that removing people's autonomy is okay, especially thinking in the situation where these people are trying to bring real change in the world. But what were the chances that their plan actually could have succeeded?
I don't know, so much to think about here.

a fun and funky fact for general public consumption is that the music that plays in 2x03 over Flint looking in through Miranda’s window and realizing that he’s completely unwelcome while she has “civilized” guests is the Very Same music that’s played in 4x03 over Silver and Madi’s reunion and Flint’s reaction to it so. Make of that what you will…

I was watching Rogue One today and there is a moment where the generals decide not to fight, they are going to surrender but Andor and a several others take Jyn’s side, they will fight for her and with her. To convince her Andor says, “Everything we’ve done would have been for nothing.” and to my roommates confusion I finished the line aloud, “we would have been for nothing.”

this is something that I think about a lot
We never get to see Flint put his hair up (criminal oversight imo) but he does more than once suddenly have it up again in between scenes which would imply that he had a stash of hair ties hidden somewhere on his person at all times.

I also think it is so interesting the way that this is a story that doesn’t get warped. Flint chose how he wanted to present it, he kept the story to himself, he rehearsed it, he told it. And it stayed that way. Despite the story staying the same when Featherstone told it, Flint still lost control of it.
Flint starts explaining the Urca de Lima with "Let me tell you a story... about a man named Vasquez" twice, meaning this is a speech he has clearly deliberately rehearsed, which we could analyze seriously but instead I'd rather just laugh picturing him practicing it in a mirror in the captain's cabin of the Walrus

At the beginning, Thomas thought he would be one of them, one day he would not awake to the banging and the yells, one day, his arms would not respond, and his shovel would not lift and he would fall into the earth. But he never did. He didn't know if it was conscious at the beginning, the fight to stay alive, even now, he still didn't know. He didn't have anything to remain for, yet here he was, ten years later, still alive. And now he wondered, as he looked at the small form limping down the drive if this man would be just another ghost passing through.

god the way the finale just looks you right in the camera and says “well? do you believe him?” All four seasons, we’ve watched Silver be the deceiver, the weaver of stories, but never until that clearing on a haunted island are we as the audience so directly implicated. Now we are the ones asked to put our trust in John Silver, the ones that ask ourselves whether we can put our trust in him after all this. Because it’s hard to say which would be more fitting: to accept that he has always been a thing made of lies, or to disbelieve him the one time he is truly honest
