RDR1/2 is so overtly critical of the State, of professional police, of southern pride, of indigenous genocide, and so so much else; Dutch’s official description literally calls him anarchic and says he’s unraveling now because the modern world is approaching. he’s realizing there’s no where left to run, that his dream of a less cruel world will never happen, because the paradigm shift to a new world built on everything he’s fought against all these years is inevitable.

Arthur and John and no safety net. They were poor and lost their families and were alone and forsaken and picked up by a gang to do what they had to survive. And if a supposedly vicious criminal like Dutch was more kind to them than the State or the orphanages or the community or any people that should have helped them, then who do they learn is the evil one?

And John. The new professional policing force kidnapping his wife and son, to make him kill men for them, while telling him killing is wrong, just so they can exert total control over the population, and he does these things for them, he reforms himself, has reformed himself for years, plays by their rules now, saves countless peoples lives, and in the end, they still come back and murder him, both because there is no forgiveness in the policing force and the State, and also because they have no problem killing good people because they do it all the time.

And so much of this commentary is lost because the sometimes we zoom to close and focus on the details of the story and not what it’s saying and it breaks me apart.
