The Atacama Desert in Chile, one of the driest places on the planet with a typically barren landscape, is covered in a vibrant floral bed. Dormant or hibernating seeds bloom the spring after large but rare rainfall, a phenomenon known as "desierto forido," or flowering desert

I had a great opportunity to speak with Frank Leder on behalf of No Man Walks Alone, a fantastic shop out of NYC. Frank is a genuinely passionate fellow whose obsession with quality really translates into his work--not just clothes, but every aspect of design and construction across several other endeavors. Some extra bits here that aren’t related to the clothing:
Arj: Going beyond the clothes…you seem to be hands-on with everything and that goes into your cosmetic products as well.
Frank Leder: Yeah, so some of them have these specific leaves in them so I’ll go to the forest to harvest [them] myself. The production is done by this high-end laboratory based in Austria, he’s producing natural cosmetics for some others as well, like Susanne Kaufmann. He was a cheesemaker and farmer and then built this big laboratory in the middle of nowhere on the edge of the forest. I heard about this guy and said, I have to meet this guy! We really clicked, he’s about 50 years old and really into what he’s doing. Probably the only guy who was willing to accept what I wanted to do. My approach is something no big cosmetic company would want to be involved in. It’s not profitable, it comes from close to the heart, something that takes lots of time—we tried for nearly two years to get the recipes right, always changing the formulas. The hand wash is based on a Bavarian sausage, in a way it’s super traditional because of the making process.
Arj: And what about the beer shampoo? Where do you get these ideas from?
FL: In the old times people tended to wash their hair with beer because it was really nourishing. Nobody would now offer you hand cream made of porcini mushrooms right? It’s a combination of all these inspirations, based on memories from childhood or traditional German recipes.
Arj: Are these cosmetics meant to introduce people to the world of Frank Leder?
FL: You could say that, yes. For me it’s an addition to my garments. It’s maybe easier to buy, a garment may be too costly but someone may still be interested in my offerings. So for customers or shops, yeah it gets the word out. But it was really fun to experiment in a different environment.
Arj: There’s also talk about furniture now?
FL: Yeah, it’s not on the website, but we’ve done some things in the past ; tables, chairs, but it’s something that I’m producing and it’s important to do because I like it, if I have the idea. I don’t limit myself to fashion. I find the people that I can work with and go for it, it brings tremendous joy.  There’s one fashion-related piece coming out soon, it’s like a military locker that soldier would put his things in. The last collection was about uniforms and lockers, and I started to get into that .In the locker every garment has its own place. It’s designed very precisely in how you placeyour shirts, shoes, under garments. So I’ve produced a locker out of a material that you wouldn’t really use. They used to be made of salvaged wood, but I’ve used walnut which is quite expensive. And there are garments produced for this locker: it’s a full collection; trousers, shirts, hats, shoes, and you have to buy the locker with the garments, the whole environment, everything is together. It would be limited to maybe five. It would be interesting to see who is interested in it because it will be quite expensive.
