I have a Problem
Every fandom I’m in (including fandoms I was in before) keep filtering into my brain through the lens of a Suspiria AU
It’s exhausting
Like I can’t make a dancing-as-magic-and-divinity-worship fic for ALL of my fandoms goddamn ittt

Something that is in fact SO important to Wei Wuxian is that, fundamentally, he is hot. He is Thee Hot Girl. He’s shooting five arrows blindfolded as a charged political statement and he’s doing it with zero magic powers AND he was sexy when he did it. He beats out his own brother (sorry, Jiang Cheng) for Most Eligible Bachelor despite being literally dirt poor and not a sect heir. He lives rent free in the minds of everybody twenty years later, to the point that JC and LWJ are literally Like That and NHS literally constructed his revenge plot around him and— look, just watch the scenes at the Second Burial Mounds Siege. Oh, and they use all his inventions, even though he’s an evil heretic, because uhhh they were really good inventions. Actually. Like he was in fact at the top of the field as an inventor and innovator. And he was hot. AND he had no powers. Whoops.

the best part about wei wuxian's resurrection scene is that it happens when the audience doesn't know anything about him yet, so when he goes "i'm going to act like a deranged homosexual lunatic so no one recognizes me" you're like yeah sure that could be a feasible disguise until the flashback happens and you realize it's a terrible idea, because wei wuxian acts like a deranged homosexual lunatic all the time

MXTX really said: if you write a villian who has suffered abuse and trauma but also does cruel and evil things, the audience is going to divide into people who either say his trauma means his actions were 100% justified or people who say he deserved his trauma because of his later evil actions. When the truth is the villian is both a traumatised victim and guilty of their very evil crimes in equal measure. In fact I'm giving you a specific example so you understand what I'm talking about
And the audience proceeded to prove her point exactly

I've been thinking for a few days about how Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangyao both recognize the limits of their own power. And like. A lot of people don't like that. They expect Heroes(tm) to push past their limits and do the impossible, like Wei Wuxian. But they can't do that.

Am I gonna project a bunch of my religious issues onto this character? Yes. Sorry.

A lot of danmei (Chinese BL) conventionally have one character who always tops (the gong) and one who never does (the shou), and as far as I know the shou tends to be the "main" character. The story is usually centered around their life instead of the gong's. In the novel, Lan Wangji is the gong and Wei Wuxian is the shou, and the author has said that she doesn't like their dynamics being reversed in fandom. All of this has kinda led to a situation where fans can get really contentious about their preferred dynamic or harass those who like the non-canon dynamic. But harassment is obviously not tolerated in the decent side of the fandom so just block anyone who gives you grief and keep scrolling. :-)
Well all right then! :)
I may be new to danmei, and Chinese media in general, but I’m not new to curating my own fandom experience!
I’m not saying that if I ever write Wangxian that Wexian will always top Wangji, but it’ll probably happen sometimes. I know the block and filter buttons well!

I was wholly unprepared for the experience of watching the untamed in 2023. I’ve seen the gifs! I’ve read some character analysis! I vaguely knew the plot but I did not expect a.) the show to be a lot more tragic and nuanced and funny than what I thought possible and I cannot stress this enough b.) for Wen Ning to also be there on that damn boat
