Evaluation.

Describe the tasks and activities you completed during this assignment, what were you asked to produce and why/how did you choose your idea? - include and cite specific influences and inspirations from your research.

We were asked to produce a three-to-five-minute documentary that must have content filmed by me, music soundtrack, text and credits. I first considered doing a documentary about how people live an Instagram life, but I changed my mind.

I thought about doing a documentary about how accessible contraception is and when I was brainstorming around this idea, I also stumbled upon the trailer for Unpregnant a film about a seventeen-year-old who goes on a three-day road trip to New Mexico to get an abortion. Watching this film inspired me to change my idea and to focus the documentary on a woman's abortion story.

I also learnt about Bill Nichols documentary modes theory and Tony De Bromhead’s theory. At first, I struggled to put documentaries I watched into his modes but the more documentaries I watched the easier it was to identify traits.

After looking at different camera shots and angles I completed John's week 8 practical task by filmed different shots and angles. Doing this helped me to think about what shots I wanted to include.

2. What type of research did you undertake? Give examples and detail of two sources of relevant academic or cultural information that shaped your planning or development of your work. Check all research is Harvard referenced and annotated.

I have both quantitive and qualitative research. The quantitive research is the abortion statistics I found on the World Health Organization website. The qualitative research is when I looked through the stories on the Shout Your Abortion website and using Kayla’s story.

I also analyzed three documentaries with Bill Nichols theory in mind. And when I settled on the idea of my documentary being abortion, I looked for abortion themed documentaries for inspiration.

3. How do you feel about the pre-production paperwork you have produced? How did this help you plan and develop your ideas?

I feel that the pre-production paperwork has helped me to stay on track and help me to identify what I needed to do. The paperwork helped me to plan my time and made sure that I uploaded my ideas to Tumblr.

4. What Mode of documentary did you choose to create? Why? How did this impact your process for this project?

I chose to make a poetic documentary with some performative traits. Choosing this mode made it easier to think about what I wanted to include this was especially helpful when thinking about what clips to include.

5. How did you plan to shoot your film and what crew and equipment did you use? Did this change due to the current Pandemic and lockdown? If so, how did you change and adapt your idea? Reference College COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Once the lockdown was in place it made me think about how my documentary would have to change, I filmed on my phone and I bought a microphone and a tripod. I also had to think about how I would be editing if I couldn’t edit in college.

6. Was your shoot effective? What could you have done in hindsight that would have given you more editorial options?

My shoot was effective as I filmed one scene of birds flying and a tree, I did this to create a poetic look.

7. Was the editing process difficult? What would you do to make this easier in the future?

The editing process for me was quite difficult because I was editing on a free Abode Premiere Rush trial. It was difficult to edit because I'm used to Adobe Premiere Pro and I struggled to work on Adobe Rush.

The layout was different, and it was difficult to find the transitions. When I was filming, I planned to use the poetic footage to feature the statistics but in editing I found that I couldn’t do that.

8. Review your Website, have you uploaded all work? is it labelled, organized and easy to navigate with detailed weekly reflective journals?

To organise my work and to make it easier to navigate I created a master list where all my work would be categorised. At the beginning of the project, I created a WordPress site but after posting some post I noticed they wouldn’t save in the right categories I tried to fix the problem, I even made a new site to see if that would work but it didn’t, so I created a Tumblr page and uploaded all the work I'd completed at that stage.

9. What new skills have you learned during this assignment?

I have learnt new editing techniques I was able to edit my voiceovers to remove the pauses. I have also learnt to be resilient.

10. What skills have you had the chance to develop during this assignment? Highlight improved skills in relation to a previous project.

I’ve had to develop my editing skills. I’m more resilient and know have better time management skills.

11.What new skills have you learned during this assignment?

I have learnt new editing techniques I was able to edit my voiceovers to remove the pauses. I have also learnt to be resilient.

12. What skills have you had the chance to develop during this assignment? Highlight improved skills in relation to a previous project.

With learning to be resilient meant keeping up my work, when online lessons started, I had a lot of work to complete, and it did build up at a point I had my course work, math's lessons and the documentary work to complete with also learning to work at home. Whilst being at home I learnt to do the food shopping alone which meant writing a list, budgeting and having it put away before my Wednesday lesson began.

13. How do you feel about your final piece and how you have managed during this project?

I feel proud of my documentary especially because the lockdown stopped a lot of my ideas and forced me to re-evaluate my ideas.

14. What feedback did you get from your peers? How do you feel about this?

I haven’t got any feedback from my peers yet, but I did send the YouTube link to my dad and he liked it. I also put it on my Facebook and WordPress sites.

15.What skills/ areas would you like to improve upon in your final major project?

I would like to improve my editing skills in my final major project as I plan to continue with the abortion topic but hopefully the pandemic won’t be a as big a problem then.

Shot list.

Poland : scuffles erupt as thousands protest against abortion ban

I used clips from this as it had a lot of violent looking protests compared to other clips that I’ve used and seen. A lot of the shots used in the footage are wide close ups.

US abortion rights activists protest against “war on women”

I used clips from this video because it was more peaceful and I wanted to include it to show how united the people are on this issue. A lot of the shots in the video medium shots but you can also see a lot of the signs clearly which is another reason why I used the clip.

History is made as Ireland votes to repel anti-abortion laws.

I wanted to include a video on Ireland’s protesting because I remember talking about the protests in Ireland when I was in secondary school and watching news reports on it on the news. And when I was first brainstorming ideas those memories are what inspired me to create this look for the documentary.

I would say that this is a medium full shot.

My own footage.

I filmed a tilted scene with a focus on a tree and birds flying. I did this to create a poetic effect I had wanted to use this footage to have the statistics on but that wasn’t possible in editing so I put the statistics on a titles page.
