Chapter Summary: Lucy grumbles and scoots across the bed until she can throw an arm across Kate’s lap and bury her face against her hip. It’s far too early to function, and she wants nothing more than to curl up against her girlfriend and go back to sleep, 7:30 a.m. departure time be damned.

“You should probably think about getting up soon,” Kate says, somehow managing to sound both fond and admonishing all at once, “We have to leave for Chicago in an hour.”

“Don’t care,” Lucy whines, “Too comfy.”

“Come on, my sweet, I’ll make it worth your while,” Kate says, suggestion lacing her voice in a way that makes Lucy perk up a bit.

“Oh, yeah?” she asks, pulling back just enough to squint up at Kate in the faint blue light.

“Oh, yeah,” Kate says with a smirk, wiggling her eyebrows, “if you get out of bed right now, you’ll be greatly rewarded.”

Warmth pools in Lucy’s stomach and she hums in interest. “With what?”

“With,” Kate drawls as she traces a single finger down the side of Lucy’s face, causing goosebumps to break out over her whole body, “one last half hour of Whistler family time and a twelve hour trip home.”

Lucy groans and shoves her face back against Kate’s hip.

Lucy lifts a hand in a slightly awkward wave. “Just, uh, looking for Kate.”

“You just missed her,” Paula says with a small smile before turning back to the sink. “She was heading out to look for you.”

Lucy jerks her thumb over her shoulder and starts retreating. “Okay, thanks. I’ll just—”

“Stay, stay,” Dan says warmly, “We’d love to get to know you more. You are dating our daughter, after all, and I feel like we don’t know a thing about you.”

Lucy freezes, before slowly walking forward to lean against the island. She’s never felt more uncomfortable in her life—not only does she not know Kate’s parents very well, she also kind of resents them for how they’ve treated Kate since Noah’s death.

Silence settles over the kitchen, awkward and stilted. Nobody meets anybody’s eyes and the silence drags on until it passes unbearable into straight up torture.

“So, uh, what do you want to know?” Lucy finally asks.

Dan and Paula look at each other, visibly sagging in relief. Lucy would probably be more insulted if she didn’t feel the exact same way.

Chapter Summary: Once they are back in the car, Lucy rests a hand on Kate’s arm, stopping her from starting it. “Hey,” she says, furrowing her brow, “can I ask you something?”

“‘Course, anything,” Kate says immediately, her own eyebrows furrowing as she turns her entire body to give Lucy her full attention. It makes warmth curl in Lucy’s stomach.

“Why didn’t you tell your parents about joining the FBI?” Lucy asks quietly.

Kate’s face flickers through many different expressions before settling on resignation, her eyes drifting past Lucy’s shoulder with a sigh. “It’s complicated,” she says.

Lucy runs her hand down Kate’s arm until she can lace her fingers together, tucking one leg under her and twisting so she can face Kate fully. It’s a little uncomfortable, and she knows her hips and knees are going to be stiff later, but it’s worth it to see the way that Kate smiles a little at the gesture. “I’ve got time,” she says, running her thumb soothingly over the back of Kate’s hand.
