This is a great walkthrough... I am going to continue to just take pictures as I finish minis right on my painting table because I am lazy af and this is more of a completion log for me then a mini picture blog.

No one asked for this and it might be rude, but!

I got some unsolicited advise for people photographying minis with phones against a backdrop of anykind (but especially a textured one) :

Here’s a suggestion to try things differently and then you’ll be able to decide which option you find more interesting…

What I usually see is this :

Minis with their backs against the wall, so to speak.

What it creates is that there is little differenciation with the minis, there is as much attention given (if not more!) to the background than to the mini when the eyes go through the image (in this case my minis are lacklustre which makes the issue very obvious)

You might want to try this and see if you like it better :

Giving some space between the backdrop and the minis will achieve two things :

Less light on the background, highlighting and detaching the minis from the rest of the scene, making them more noticeable.

Even with a phone, which hasn’t got a very shallow depth of field, doing this will allow you to put the background out of focus, making it even easier to focus on the minis. If you zoom in digitally with the phone, you’ll also help make that effect slightly more obvious. (Don’t overdo it though, you’ll lose in image quality fast!)

You can also really amplify the results by lowering the brightness of the background and adding blur effect with layer masks on it on an editing software such as Gimp (free) or PS, really making the minis stand out.

And of course all of this stays true if you use more unified backdrops and/or a dslr or camera with macro mode.

Here’s an example of things done not so well :

Even if the image is OK, the background is way too close to the mini, making it receive almost as much light as the mini and thus making it too bright and distracting. I could’ve edited it but somehow didn’t (because the issue is minimal, the camera creates enough out-of-focus blur to make the mini stand out)

But ideally this is the result I want to go for :

A very “low key” background, almost completely black to really make the little mans shine and pop out.

Before I go back to the homeworking grinder, I’ll just mention that if anyone wants me to make a twitch stream and/or video tutorial on how to edit phone pictures like the dark eldar I posted there, yeah I’m open to it, if I get enough people harassing me about it.

I'll be honest I have been super happy that my mother has decided to take my son a couple days a week. He just has more energy then my wife and I combined especially while we work with the 2 month old on strange sleep schedules and both work full time from home. I don't love him less or miss him less I just can't keep up with him, at least at school he had 15 other kids to wear him out somewhat. And if someone couldn't play with him there were 15 other people who might be able to.

i knew the state of society’s view of children was bad but i didn’t realize just how dire the situation was was until the lockdown began. this last month or so has really opened my eyes to how much people dislike children, even their own children, simply because they exist and they need them because you know… they’re small humans without the capacity to care for themselves.  it seems harmless but memes talking about how parents need alcohol to deal with their kids or can’t wait for their kids to go back to school so someone else can deal with them does harm in that it dehumanizes children and puts blame on the children for existing when it’s not the child’s fault they were brought into the world. it also brings about another uncomfortable fact: if you don’t like the way your children behave, barring them having a behavioral disorder or disability, you’re probably to blame and need to reevaluate how you’re raising them. children are more than innocent bystanders… they are helpless and absolutely reliant on the adults around them to not only provide for them, but to show them love which in turn sets the precedent for how they will love in the future. this attitude implying they asked to be here and that it’s okay to joke about how annoying they are has got to stop.
