Want to hear a scary true story??? It’s a bit long but since it’s good time of year for a scary story, I’ll tell you. Living on a farm, we get our share of animals getting killed, but this happened a month ago and it still gives me the chills... Our ducks are really good sitters while our chickens are not, but we needed more chickens so we’ve been swapping the duck eggs with chicken eggs. It works. The ducks are good sitters and mothers even if they’re hatching out chicks... except for Weevil. It was strange because it was time for Weevil’s eggs to hatch but no chicks. I even thought I heard chirping noises (or was it screams?) so I checked her nest when she got up to get water and food. But still no chicks... Strange, I thought, was there only 6 eggs? But I’m terrible with remembering numbers so I didn’t think much of it. The next day we saw a chick! We were happy but that quickly turned to horror as the chick was out of the nest and on the ground injured. Weevil was still sitting and didn’t seem to notice the chick. We took the chick in and noticed her right wing was missing. I thought maybe another animal had attacked it. Where was our cat? As the kids and I were taking care of the injured chick, I heard my wife scream. My wife had another chick in her hand with blood everywhere. Then I saw the blood dripping off Weevil’s beak and looking into her eyes, I understood. Weevil has been eating the newborns! She’s been hatching them, but because she also eats the shells I didn’t realize it. We quickly took the rest of eggs away and made a makeshift incubator. The other chick died but we did mange to hatch three more eggs. If you swipe to the next photo, you’ll see our one wing survivor.
