I love episode 8 because Speirs is always around Winters and Nixon and for some reason that makes him look kinda small and it's so funny

I'm sorry but "He means well" as Speirs' senior superlative sent me looking for his high school yearbook.

for the dialogue prompts: "i made her cry. how could i do that?" + speirs? thank you!
AN: I can’t stop writing for my newest OC, Ruth. Hope that’s okay! I wanted to write something different than the usual “Speirs is mad and yells” fic even though I wrote that trope at first but ended up deleting it. Hope you like this just as much!
Soldiers part like the sea for Lieutenant Speirs as he marches through camp, searching makeshift aid station after aid station until he finds the Sergeant he’s looking for.
“Kelley,” he greets her, watching as she barely winces as Doc Pepping digs into her bicep, the Sergeant having taken a bullet during a skirmish earlier in the day.
“Speirs,” she replies, tone as cheery as ever, if a little strained. “To what do I owe the pleasure? Thought Dog was on reserve for this?”
He nods. “We are. Caught the supply officer on my way and heard you were wounded. Thought I’d check in.”
Ruth Kelley was something of a jack of all trades for the 506th. Officially with Easy, she led a squad and was sure with a rifle, but also came from the OSS, and frequently worked with Nixon and the other companies on intelligence missions - recon and patrols.
She and Speirs worked together often, and if he found himself getting attached to the woman, well... that’s no one’s business.
“Here.” He says casually, thrusting a Hershey’s bar at her. “Thought it might help.”
She blinks at him before taking the bar out of his hands. He watches in horror as her eyes grow watery.
“You don’t know how long it’s been--” She stops herself, shaking her head. She looks at Doc. “How much morphine did you give me?”
“You refused morphine, Sarge.” He says, hint of a grin playing at his lips. “You’re all set. Take it easy for a few days,” he orders, squeezing her other shoulder.
She hops off the table with a murmured thanks, pushing past Speirs.
He watches her go, trying to figure out what the hell just happened. “I made her cry.” He says, mystified. “How could I--”
“I’d wager she was surprised you did something nice for her, sir.” Pepping says, busying himself putting away supplies. “Who knows when the last time that happened was.”
Speirs, still surprised by Ruth’s reaction (and his own, if he’s honest - the churning of his insides at the first sign of tears in her eyes), wanders out of the aid station almost aimlessly.
Across the way, on the steps of a bombed out building, Ruth sits in a patch of sun, fresh white bandage gleaming on her arm. She’s already got half the chocolate unwrapped and takes a bite, tilting her head back as a smile grows on her lips.
Ruth Kelley surprises him every day. Not just for her bravery and her smarts, but with things like this - she opens her eyes and sees him standing there, and gets to her feet. She’s in front of him before he can react.
“Thanks for this, sir.” She says, checking that no one else is lingering around. Pressing up on her toes, she kisses him lightly on the cheek. “It really helped me feel better. Thank you.”
She’s gone before he can blink, and he swallows hard as he watches her walk down the cobblestones towards the CP.
He absently rubs at the spot where her lips had been, shaking his head. Chocolate. Who knew.

something so innately raw about falling in love during a war. like you’ve seen the worse in me yet you still want me. you’ve seen me cruel, cranky, outright mean but you’re still here. you’ve seen me breakdown and cry until i’m sobbing and heaving but you promise to never leave me. like you’ve seen the worse of me but still continue to love me and you will most likely never see the best of me ever again (that was left behind when i entered the war). you remind me that we’re in this together and that we can build another best of us together. and then i remember that you too are just as broken as me and that i still want you at your worse as well.
