okay so idk what meta is but listen THE DIRECTION ON DEAD BOY DETECTIVES IS FUCKING SUPERB. UNRIVALLED. AND I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT TO THE HELLSITE VOID. SO LISTEN.

transitions. between scenes. it's so easy to cross-fade, or just hard cut, or fade to black and then open the next scene. sometimes, if a piece of media is putting in a bit of effort, you'll see things like water transitioning to sky or maybe a background being continuous while the characters change or vice versa.

but dead boy detectives. the transitions are fucking flawless. and so creative, like everything about this show. creative transitions are difficult to do, and they keep getting it right. whether it's someone holding up a circle and that melds into the next scene where the railing has a circle in it, or the camera moving downwards from the floor in one location to under a table in a different location, or them falling out of mirrors, they take the tiniest of elements and turn them into transitions so fucking deliciously, and everything is so dynamic, both the camera and the scene.

and that makes it so much more impactful when there IS a hard cut. like in episode 5 (where the You Know What occurs with Jenny). the cut from the mascot at the high school scene to the butcher's shop is BRUTALLY hard, with Jenny again slicing into things with her meat cleaver, and it lends an extra air of violence to that meat cleaver--which is such great foreshadowing for what happens later (even the initial establishing shot of the butcher's shop at the start of the episode makes the cleaver in the sign flash red, drawing attention to it).

the direction helps the narrative so much, giving both atmosphere and foreshadowing without needing to fatten the dialogue with it.

and apart from all that just the general camerawork is so creative and helps with the campy feel of the show, with characters being bang in the middle of frames or with the camera holding a lovely shot for longer than a beat like Edwin and Niko cocking their heads to the side it's all such a lovely, choreographed dance between the camera, the actors, the set and the script and NGKKK.

Gc2b Binders No Longer Reputable

I've been away, so y'all may already be very aware of this, but I want to make sure it's stated on this blog because it's been The Brand for yeeeaaars: the quality of gc2b binders has been going downhill the past few years. People who bought from them prior and recently can attest to how poor the quality has become. The binders are just not the same. The material isn't comfortable and, more importantly, the fit just isn't good. People who've tried recent gc2b binders, even those who've been binding for years, are suffering from back and muscle pain, stiff shoulders, soreness, etc. regardless of fit. The material just doesn't seem to be suitable for binding anymore. It is also degrading really quickly and binders are wearing out in a matter of months. It is no longer worth it to buy from gc2b.

You'll want to keep your eye on brands that are still doing good work: Spectrum Outfitters (UK), For Them (seems to be a hate it or love it company; I know some who swear by them and others who feel they dont' really sell actual binders - just sports bras/lighter compression tops), Shapeshifters (good custom work and larger sizing), and Underworks (best budget brand).

To throw my hat in the ring here, my personal theory for Jeremy Knox's unknown fucked up past is that his brother committed suicide, which led to him developing anger issues/self destructive tendencies that were exacerbated by the his former team (I think he mentions them being pretty unsportsmanlike) and eventually escalated into something that got him arrested. He refused to give up exy which the family tried to blame for the issue, so instead his mom had him go to therapy, which helped him— along with the Trojan's general vibe— but at this point his family isn't willing to forgive him due to the potential scandal/whatever happened. I'm thinking the incident probably has something to due with the former exy team as a whole but that's as far as my theory goes.

My theory on what happened with Jeremy’s family (tw: suicide):

When telling Jean about Jeremy’s siblings, she says, “Jeremy has - three. One sister, two brothers. The older brother’s an absolute tool, but there’s bound to be a jerk or two when you pass four kids.” The hesitation before three leads me to believe she was withholding the actual number. Common sense says she neglected to mention one: I’m thinking he had 4 siblings, one sister and three brothers. Alternativley she was hesitating trying to decide whether or not to tell the truth and decided she would not lie (as we know the names of the oldest brother [Bryson] and the sister [Annalise], but not that secret third sibling). In that case it would be interesting to see contradiction from Jeremy later.

Now as far as what the fuck happened, I am unfortunately thinking that the mystery sibling committed suicide and for some reason the family blames Jeremy. We see after Jean says he hopes Greyson will follow in suit of Wayne: “That isn’t a joke’ Jeremy said with unexpected ferocity.” We don’t see Jeremy get so harsh at any other point in the book, which points to personal involvement somehow.

This would also mean police involvement (it’s grim, but its who you call when you find a body) and it would make sense that Jeremy would avoid them not out of fear but out of either guilt over his involvement or refusal to get “sorry for your loss”ed from people that were also involved.

Annalise, his younger sister, states that Jeremy started his college career with a scandal that perhaps came to a head with a fall banquet that split the family and made her swear off exy, mad that Jeremy did not swear it off as well.

So…to put all that together, I think Jeremy had a sibling who played exy as well. At the fall banquet during Jeremy’s freshman year, something happened between this sibling and Jeremy (perhaps an argument?) that ended with the sibling committing suicide and Jeremy taking the blame for it.

Obviously some large pieces are missing from this theory, but still…tell me what you think.

Can we talk about how crazy of a book Edwin gave to Monty in exchange for the astrology book? I was initially laughing cuz it was called “Valley of the Dolls” (come ON Edwin really?) But then I looked up the plot and what business does Edwin have reading that? It appears to be largely about love affairs and infidelity…it all seems rather risqué for Edwin’s delicate Edwardian sensibilities.

Something that always makes me giggle is what the Cat King says to Edwin after Niko dies. “We don’t all have nine lives. My condolences for your brave friend” is so genuinely off of a greeting card. Like I can see the stupid cat graphic and everything, my guy has no freaking people skills. He even pauses substantially in the middle of the two sentences, like you’re turning the card open or some shit. Idk how Edwin didn’t smack him.
