Dramione Fics I Loved in 2021

So grateful for the many fanfic authors who freely share their talent with us. I always find myself coming up short with the words to express my love for them and their stories since I don’t quite have a way with words like they do… But I do, however, have some f l a i r for the arts. So for this holiday break, I gave myself the challenge of creating a little digital collage as a thank you for a few of the stories I read this year that have really stuck with me. Here ya go guys!

Beautifully written, beautifully told. I always appreciate stories that feature Astoria (or Ron) as someone with compassion and understanding, instead of always being made out to be a simpering and/or evil bitch. I was cheering for them all at the end!

Every time Hermione Granger is in close proximity to Draco Malfoy, she is seized by a sudden urge to flee his presence. What on earth could be the reason for that?

Not a love triangle despite where my collage ended up… but they do “vie” for Hermione’s support on something stupidly hilarious. Poor Harry. The author was a new discovery for me this year and I’ve enjoyed so many other stories of theirs: Draco Malfoy’s Halfway House for Wayward Hens (first one I ever read!), Commonalities of the Coldest Kind, Choice and Chance, among a few others. All are HILARIOUS!!

Anchors in a Storm, @inadaze22

Draco’s current mistake—well, it wasn’t simply one, but three—was a chain of seemingly unconnected events that, when spliced together just so, made one hell of a shit storm.

Loved the storytelling of the literal shit storm they went through. The author took me on an Adventure and I didn’t even notice that nine chapters flew by! Draco is an Idiot. Ha! (Also really recommend The Art of Seating Etiquette, which I read earlier in the year.)

Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love, isthisselfcare

Hermione straddles the magical and non-magical worlds as a medical researcher and Healer about to make a Big Discovery. Draco is an Auror assigned to protect her from forces unknown – to both of their displeasure. Features hypercompetent, fiery Hermione and lazy, yet dangerous, Draco. Slow burn.

My current absolute fav. Thank you to @mightbewriting (whose Wait & Hope series you should be reading!) for recommending this on her tumblr several weeks ago. This is simply top-notch! And THE BANTER (!!) IN THIS IS TOP-NOTCH. I really, really cannot express enough words to tell you how amazing and hilarious this story is. You WILL get butterflies! And squeal and smile in your room like the Dramione idiot that you are. I love this story so much that I couldn’t stop at just one collage, and so did a second inspired by the latest chapter.

Falling Dark, @scullymurphy

It’s a year after Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy parted in Italy with promises of love and fidelity. The Battle of Hogwarts is over and Voldemort is dead. And although the price paid was high, Hermione is ready to start the rest of her life, and her eighth year studies, with Draco by her side. No hiding and no shame. But when Draco finally arrives at Hogwarts, it’s obvious that things are very wrong. Why is he acting so strangely? 

If Bending Light was the warm, lazy Italian summer, this is the dark, brooding Scottish winter. Dress warmly.

Another fav author, one who’s inspired me several times before to create. And this year, she did the unthinkable and had me rooting for someone other than Draco. I’ve been reading Dramione for close to two decades now (the only ship I typically read) and never has an “other” snuck up on me and taken hold like this. Color me shocked with a side of existential crisis to boot. Kidding… mostly. The latest chapter has me ready for Draco’s comeback tho!! (This is the sequel to Bending Light, another fav, which you MUST read as well!!)

In Search of Sunrise, In_Dreams (@indreamsink)

Unable and unwilling to walk away from a dare, Hermione is forced to stay up all night with Draco Malfoy. Sometimes, one night is enough to begin to understand a person.

I read this again yesterday to help me get inspired and I’m happy to report that the story still holds. This Draco is super endearing! A great fic if you’re looking for a new beginnings story for our fav duo. And speaking of an endearing!Draco, the author’s entry to last year’s @dhr-advent, Hazy, is one of my favs and I feel like it deserves so much more love and attention! Also highly recommend Chronos Historia for anyone who’s a sucker for a time travel fic.

Love and Other Historical Accidents, @pacific-rimbaud

Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy never intended to blow up their life’s work, but that’s rather what they’ve gone and done. Now they’re trapped 200 years in the past, with a broken Time Turner, a missing snuff box, a handful of overly-eligible daughters, and a House-elf in a cable knit cardigan. It will require the combined power of their keen intellects to get them home, if they’d stop arguing long enough to use them. For fans of Harry Potter, Jane Austen, and Connie Willis, a historical romantic comedy all about time, and getting the hell out of it.

Speaking of time travel, this is one of my favs! Now complete! Congrats to Pac for completing this story recently; I got into this late last year, but have been cackling at 3am with their shenanigans ever since. A funny story about this collage is that I actually meant to make one a year ago during the 2020 holiday break, but couldn’t for the life of me create one that felt “right”. (I’ve got LAOHA.psd, LAOHA 2.psd, and September’s LAOHA 3.psd in my laptop for proof!) I’m so happy these two Idiots have finally ‘caught up’ with each other and got on the same page!

To Seek the Light of Truth, @sparrow-ink

A retelling of the myth of Eros & Psyche.

An ancient artifact awakens in Magical Britain. Drama ensues. Hermione Granger doesn’t have time for rubbish like having her marriage arranged by a semi-sentient cup, only it seems she doesn’t have much choice in the matter. How is she supposed to help replenish the population of magical Britain when she doesn’t even know her husband’s name, and she’s never seen his face? And is she actually falling in love with someone who might as well be a ghost? Of course not. That would be ridiculous.

Herein contains: a library as a bribe (a bribrary, if you will), too much tea drinking, and more nonsense than you can shake a wand at. Enjoy!

And lastly, this little WIP that I’m hoping isn’t abandoned! I’m normally not one for Marriage Law fics, or anything similar which this one is, but I was pleasantly surprised by this story so far. It may or may not have been the bribrary (read: library as a bribe) that got me…?! I can’t wait to see how their relationship progresses and their reaction when everything is revealed!

Break Your Heart Worse

“Oh Merlin, she’s here,” Draco told them.

His Auror partner slapped him on the back unnecessarily hard. “Chin up there, Malfoy. It’ll get better.”

“You only say that because you upgraded from a Weasley to a Parkinson last year, Potter.”

A swat hit his chest.

“Bloody hell, Granger. You’ve been doing that enough I’m going to become lopsided.”

She rolled her eyes at Draco. 

“I’m sick of your moping.”

Draco pouted, “I don’t mope.”

“OK, fine, you tragically lament the tatters of your wretched heart like an Arthurian prince.”

“Exactly,” Draco agreed while Harry guffawed like a donkey.

“Fine. Let me break your heart worse then,” Granger offered ludicrously.

“What?”

“You heard me, if you’re so attached to feeling like this, let me break you worse. It’ll be fun, I promise.”

“You’re insane, Granger. Why would I want to feel worse than this?”

“You want to be a king or a prince, Malfoy?”

“Fine. One date, that’s it.”

“Good luck, mate. You remember what she did to Ron,” Harry said.

Draco thought back to the weepy, catatonic mess Weasley had been for weeks after their break-up. 

He scoffed.

“Like she’ll be able to coerce me into having any feeling for her at all.”

“Oh my fucking gods, Hermione. Where did you learn to do that?”

“Hm, would you have feelings about me stopping doing this?”

“Shut the fuck up and keep going.”

It sounded like she said ‘OK’ but where her mouth was placed it was hard to tell. 

“By the way, we’re going out tomorrow, too,” Draco told her.

“It’s been one year Granger and I’m still completely indifferent to you, shouldn’t you give this up now?”

“OK,” she started walking away. “See you on Monday.”

He grabbed her hand.

“You’re forgetting the break-up sex.”

She smiled. “Silly me.”

He signed the lease. 

“This doesn’t mean anything, it’s just practical.”

“Oh yes, of course. And we’re saving money by only having one bedroom,” she nodded.

“Yes, because you’re going to break my heart remember? But you can’t do that if I don’t care.”

“Yes, that is my goal. I’m wondering if I’ll do it when you propose. I’ll turn you down and you’ll be so, so sad.”

“Unlikely, Granger,” he shook his head in disbelief. “As if I’d want to tied to you forever. That proposal you’re holding out for is never happening.”

“Do you understand what you’ve cost me having Potter and Parkinson in your bridal party? I had to have Theo and Blaise and they’ve been utterly fucking impossible like I knew they would be.”

“Sorry they turned your robes the same colour as my Yule Ball dress, but I think you look lovely anyway.”

“So, is this still part of your masterplan to break me?”

She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Of course, when I’m absolutely sure you can’t live without me, expect divorce papers.”

Draco kissed her and the congregation applauded them.

Many, many years have passed now. They are old, slow and their lives are quiet. Their last great-grandchild had left for Hogwarts that morning. Their daughter Rebea had shared the memory of dropping off Aquila this morning. 

Hermione was resting in their bed, her breath laboured. 

“Draco,” she grasped his hand, the texture of her skin like tissue-paper. “I’m sorry I didn’t keep my promise.”

“What do you mean?” he asked, choking.

“I really did intend to leave you at some point. But my life seemed too wonderful and I always found myself wanting to stay one more day,” she swallowed and it sounded sticky like she was trying her best to stay here with him. 

“For 43,857 days I have stayed with you and I never once broke your heart. I’ve accomplished everything I set out to do in this life. All except that.”

“I think now I’d rather you didn’t,” Draco told her trying to make her laugh but she only managed a weak smile.

“I love you,” she said. “I just-” but her eyes glazed over she was gone.

Draco laughed, opening a drawer and drawing out a potion.

“Still can’t have you win, Granger,” he told her blurry form as tears obscured her. “I’ll find you so you can keep your promise sometime in the afterlife.”

He brought the Gravewitch Brew to his lips, “Though I hope you don’t. I can’t think of anything worse than being without you.”

He tipped it back and let the concoction work.

“You waited for me.”

“Of course I did, I know you hate discovering things after I do,” she said. 

The wide expanse of the universe opened up before them.

“Break my heart in the next lifetime, love,” he grasped her amorphous form.

And followed her into the dark.

”He must be the most arrogant person I’ve ever met.” Hermione’s voice echoed in the empty office.

”Are you talking about Malfoy again?”

”Yes. I mean... You have met him, right? He’s unbearabe. He is always early, which makes me feel like I’m late. He calls me ’Granger’ even though I’ve asked him to call me Hermione a hundred times. He never asks how I am. Never, Dottie! And we meet almost every day. And he always stares at me with this weird look in his eyes.”

”I see. You must really hate him.”

”I don’t know if hate is the right word,” Hermione said.

”What is it, then?”

”I don’t know! I just – I can’t stop thinking about him. I have to see him at work everyday, and when I go home, all I can think about is his stupid face and the pretentious way he talks. And have you ever smelled him, Dottie?”

”Have I... have I ever smelled Malfoy?”

”Even his smell is so distracting! He smells so... fresh and clean. Like rain mixed with some spices or something. It’s really hard to focus around him because of that. I swear, he doesn’t think anybody but himsef.”

”I think you’re right,” Dottie said slowly.

”You think he’s unbearable too?”

”No. I think you’re right, hate is not the right word for this situation.”

sometimes this is what I imagine Draco & Hermione’s Instagram feed look like if they dated each other.

headcanon: draco never captions his photos, except if they are of Hermione, he’ll always caption it “love” in different languages.

Hermione always quotes famous poets or writers in her captions. Theodore nott once took her phone and added “teddy waz here”, she never erased it.

this art is semi compliant with my WIP “flowers in her hair”. I say semi complaint because there’s no actual mentions of Instagram at all whatsoever in my fic but this would be what they’d have based on my version of these two.

Ron said nothing, only looked away, his lips pressed tight while Hermione further opened the door to the parts of her that she had kept private. Secret. Tamped down during their relationship and in the years following.

“I… I want to be seen. I want intimacy. I want a connection. I want to be turned inside out by someone who knows me just as well as I know myself. I want someone who loves me for who I am, and you don’t. I can’t keep bending and contorting and stretching myself thin to keep the peace and make you happy. I’ll snap. Again.”

She could tell when the memories jumped to the forefront of his brain by the way his eyes went distant. “Hermione…”

“I love myself. I know my value and identity. Maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for, maybe I won’t, but I’ll wait the rest of my life before I settle for anything less than what I deserve. And I deserve to be loved correctly… or not at all.”
