As a poc Muslim, I want to stress that this is a scary time for many of us who are Black and people of colour. If you are white, there are still things you can and should be doing for your Black and POC friends.

1) Check in with us when possible - being an ally is more than monetarily donating to organizations. It’s showing you ACTUALLY care in your day to day life. Anyone can throw a few dollars to an organization and say ‘Black Lives Matter’ but it’s what you do on the daily to help us that matters.

2) Spread awareness about current issues - the best way to do this is to signal boost your Black and POC friends’ opinions’ on current issues affecting us. Our voices matter and should be taken seriously. If you are boosting a news source, make sure they are Black and POC friendly

3) Volunteer for an organization/donate to one - please do this if you can! This shows that you actually care and want to make a difference in our lives. As I said, volunteering and/or donating should be done in conjunction with helping your Black/POC friends in the little ways (example: checking in with them)

4) Attending protests - please attend protests if you can because it shows you actively want to dismantle the systems that keep Black and POC people oppressed.

Being honest to yourself lifts up a big weight that's on your shoulders. Be yourself freely, its ok for people to judge you, they always have opinions. Find people that doesn't care if your opinions are different from theirs and accept yours. Trust me I've been there, too.

This is a bit different from the usual comics but I hope you like it. We moved around a lot and it meant constantly being the new kid and never having a consistent friend group. I was very awkward and scared that I would never have friends so I did everything to try and fit in - generally meaning pretending to like everything someone else liked. It took me a while to figure out that it meant people didn’t actually get to know me and I would come off as fake or just end up lonely pretending to be someone I’m not. Something I learnt is that having different interests and opinions from your friends isn’t always a bad thing. Being honest to yourself is important. I’m still working on that, but I’ve gotten better.
