bringing this up again but i'm perplexed by this post like "he would not fucking say that" is about characters saying and behaving in a way that adheres to the writer's specific worldview and politics. if you were to ask "under what circumstances WOULD he say that" in this case it would be. well, he took a gender studies class. he read 93 pages of judith butler.

why is it that on any given reddit age gap discussion there's someone going 'i'm 20 and i wouldn't date a 19 year old'

Honestly most commenter concrit is worthless. I'm not even talking about myself, I've not got very much , but i do make it a habit to read comments on things.

the amount of 'concrit' I've seen when a fic has even the barest amount of conflict boiling down to 'wahh you were mean to MY blorbo' is astronomical. that or just misunderstanding something written in the story :/

Occasionally, there is something good. I always like a comment about something being unclear, because that's something I'm happy to fix. But generally randos in your comments are the worst way to get any good advice.

(Also like...how many concritters are also leaving nice comments? A list of 'words I misspelled' and nothing else feels like shit even if it's correctable! You aren't someone's 7th grade English teacher!)

Publicly here involves anything that anyone in a broader community can see without having to join, say, a discord server. You can be more specific in the tags. If your answer would change based on which fandom or community the fic belongs to, vote for the option that best reflects the community most open to public criticism of an author's work.

Constantly thinking about that post that’s like “people think Talia was controlling Jason in lost days, Jason could barely control Jason let alone Talia” because literally one of the first thing he does after regaining consciousness is outmaneuver league agents to run back to Gotham. If he wanted to leave he could that’s why she brings up the idea of training in order to stall his plans to kill Bruce (at some point he does clue into this). To me the dynamic of Talia manipulating Jason while Jason is semi aware of this and consciously going along with it is a much more interesting dynamic to explore than “Talia is an evil temptress and Jason is hapless to her whims” you constantly see in fanon. To me their post Lazarus pit dynamic is like if you took in an injured wolf and now that it’s healed it may bite you or fuck off at anytime but it sticks around for food and company also it keeps on bringing you dead prey animals

irritating when people say they're criticizing/analyzing a character and you go to read that meta and everything (or at least a large portion) is not based on how they act in canon and instead are based on fanon/fanfiction tropes.

like be honest and say youre criticizing/analyzing 'fanon character x' instead of pretending this is the actual canon character x

Like, fandom is gonna fandom and we all love a bit of angst. But sometimes I see scenarios that say 'what if Jason focused his revenge scheme on xyz because they stopped Bruce/didn't avenge him, etc' and I feel like that doesn't really do justice to his character?

A GIANT part of his beef with Bruce and his kill the Joker plan had to do specifically with Bruce. His DAD, specifically not avenging him, and later the man not letting him avenge HIMSELF.

If Bruce wanted or was willing to kill the Joker, he WOULD. Superman stopping him in the moment or not.

People EXPECT Superman to stop stuff like that, JASON would expect this of Superman whether they were close or not. Because Clark isn't his DAD.

Jason, sorry to say, doesn't care as much about Dick's actions as he does Bruce's, same with Alfred.

He wouldn't set his sights on Superman or Alfred or Dick, because he inherently is only really concerned, revenge-wise, with his FATHER'S actions.

It kind of buys into the impulsive, uncontrolled aspect of his character that people(both official writers and not) push these days about him being someone with undirected rage that is just taking it out on whoever is in his current sight line. Or who he can believably blame for Joker not being dead.

Which just isn't true in his utrh appearance, which is the characterization we'd be talking about in this context.

If he was so inclined to go for outside actors, he would have mailed a pound of Kyptonite to Clark and killed the Joker with no revenge plan at all. One and done. But the point isn't that Joker lives, actually, it's that Bruce never CARED enough to take revenge for him.

Two VERY different things.

Like, they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, he DOES want the Joker dead, but his main beef is with Bruce's actions. Regardless of the people around the man or their views/actions.

Jason believes that if Bruce set his mind to it, cared enough, was determined enough--he could kill the Joker if he wanted to, not matter the obstacle.

So, no, his revenge redirecting the the JLA to Dick, to Alfred, to Superman or even TIM for the lack of Joker dying doesn't pass the vibe check for me.

problem with being into superhero/cape fandoms is that all the fan content is rife with people who never critically analyzed the war on drugs propaganda within the media and just regurgitates it wholesale with no nuance

like sometimes it is hard bc if you're writing about certain plot points it can be baked in and you just have to Deal with it someway and it sucks we have to do that!

but some people don't even seem to realize there's Something Wrong with the thinking presented to them and often agree with it
