Spongebob Meta
The movie Amadeus came out in 1984, and the first episode of Spongebob aired in 1999—both feature a cynical, unhappy man who struggles to distinguish himself as an artist but is consigned to “musical mediocrity” (Salieri/Squidward). In both stories, the man is unable to escape his younger, more spritely counterpart (Mozart/Spongebob). This counterpart is irritating, rude, extremely successful in a specific field (Mozart as a composer, Spongebob as a fry cook), and possesses a high-pitched laugh that drives their rival to the brink of insanity. Spongebob also exhibits an inexplicable, raw artistic talent in the episode “Artist Unknown,” in which he effortlessly sculpts a perfect recreation of the David, while Squidward (his elder and mentor) fails in every medium. In the episode “Plankton!” the character Plankton actually uses Spongebob’s body to call Squidward a “mediocre clarinet player,” words that cut to the quick.
I propose that Spongebob is actually an elaborate Amadeus alternate universe fan fiction. And I submit for your consideration the following image:
