I always think it's really weird how so many Christians seem to operate as if men and women are incapable of just being friends without things getting weird.
Then I am reminded how aggressively single and downright creepy a lot of guys are. The sheer number of female friends and acquaintances I've talked with over the years who have horror stories of terrible experiences with men attests to that fact.
And then I remember how a lot of western culture places a disproportionate focus and value on romantic relationships over friendships, and how common that sentiment is reflected in our media.
And then I remember how when I was younger it was legit just an expectation for friendships between guys and girls to develop romantic feelings. How I was teased by my own family about female friends, as if the adults around me knew my feelings better than I did. How confused I became as a result. How this constant treatment led to me ruining many friendships unnecessarily in my formative years because I could no longer differentiate romantic love from platonic love, and how common that experience seems to be for both men and women alike.
And then I think... Yeah, I guess it makes sense so many Christians assume men and women can't just be friends. It begins with perfectly valid concerns - usually about avoiding sexual immorality and heartbreak. Then it spirals into pessimism and perpetuates itself as a self-fulfilling prophecy.
All that being said, I really think it would benefit the church as a whole - especially western Christians - to stop fixating on romance so much and at least TRY to learn how to be friends with the opposite sex. Yes, we are still subject to human nature, and yes, we should still be establishing and enforcing boundaries, being wise with our company and the situations we put ourselves in, etc - but we should at least be capable of talking with one another and working together without feeling the need to scope out a mate and flirt. That sort of behavior makes sense for the unregenerate, but I truly think that Christians should expect better of themselves and each other.
Christian men and women can't function at their fullest together as the body of Christ when we're treating romance as the pinnacle of love. Learn to first love each other as Christ loves us and friendship with the opposite sex will be a lot easier.

In an undated letter written in the late 1950s, reproduced in THE LETTERS OF JRR TOLKIEN, Tolkien alludes to the legal difficulties Sam faced after returning from the Grey Havens at the end of LORD OF THE RINGS:
When Master Samwise reported the ‘departure over Sea’ of Bilbo (and Frodo) in 1421, it was still held impossible to presume death; and when Master Samwise became Mayor in 1427, a rule was made that: ‘if any inhabitant of the Shire shall pass over Sea in the presence of a reliable witness, with the expressed intention not to return, or in circumstances plainly implying such an intention, he or she shall be deemed to have relinquished all titles rights or properties previously held or occupied, and the heir or heirs thereof shall forthwith enter into possession of these titles, rights, or properties, as is directed by established custom, or by the will and disposition of the departed, as the case may require.’
You can see how the residents of Hobbiton might have seen Sam's return as the premise of a kind of Agatha Christie mystery plot: favorite servant of eccentric middle-aged local resident departs on an unexpected journey with his master; returns home alone two weeks later; and then conveniently produces a copy of said eccentric local resident's new will, naming the servant the heir to all his property — and the only account the servant can offer of his master's whereabouts is a preposterous story about Elves. Suspicious! Very suspicious indeed!

oh and! when the firefighters showed up just after the crash and I was still reeling a bit, I remembered to pull the stilts I’m using for a play out of my car’s trunk and one of them walked by and just went “you’re already tall enough”
okay so I got in a car wreck yesterday (my fault; looked down for just a second) and thank God, everyone involved was okay and really nice about it and the only major damage is to my car (so I’d definitely appreciate prayer for wisdom in the car search) but anyway what I’m really here to tell y’all about is that when I went to the tow lot to ransom my car back, the guy whose car I hit walked in just after me - and he told me I remind him of his daughter
(because she recently rear-ended someone)

Its obvious to me when people who post about canaries in mines have never met a canary. Like yeah the miners had a special device to revive the canary because canaries are one of the most adorable creatures on the planet and they make adorable little chirping sounds and honestly probably loved the sounds of machinery and people talking so it was probably loud and friendly with the workers. Whatever though maybe meet a canary sometime and youd understand

I don't think anyone really knows what it's meant to feel like to be human, and I think that's part of the reason why we keep telling the story of becoming human all the way through our history.
