is it weird that it’s kinda healing seeing celebrities I grew up with in the 90s and early 00s gain weight and keep that weight on, working the same jobs they’ve always worked (cause weirdly their fucking weight had nothing to do with anything all along, imagine that)??

I can’t remember a single celebrity on my tv growing up who looked anything even closely resembling me, particularly not in my age range. every single example of what a girl & woman was, was thin to the extreme.

But as these same women age, their bodies change, and some of them have, I think (I hope), stopped seeing this as some kind of failure that needs to be fixed. And they look so good! I’m not naming anyone specifically here cause I don’t really want to be talking about other peoples bodies, but do want to acknowledge what I hope is something that … maybe… is very slowly shifting for the better.

I’m also hoping that some day soon I’ll stop being happily surprised when I see a thin or muscled dude loving a fat woman on my screen.

very slowly on the mend…

right before I got sick I’d been reading some fics from the 9-1-1 fandom (not gonna miss a show that makes a dude canonically bi 7 seasons in!) and saw that a fair few of the fics had the following people as their main “villain” or just the shitty person we’re supposed to hate:

…. So after reading a bunch of fics, I started watching the actual episodes. Expecting these three women to have done something terrible to someone else.

Nah! I thought we (slash fic writers primarily) had stopped with bashing the fking women who are canonical love interests. Literally that used to be what SO many m/m fics were about, the female canonical love interest would inevitably be used as the villain and things they’d done (in the tv show/movie) twisted and portrayed as like 100x worse than what actually happened, just because misogynistic writers can’t wrap their heads around women …. existing, and sometimes hurting others, in ways that are not at all malicious.

Like I know that sometimes random characters are turned into villains but this is a pattern that we see specifically with women in tv shows and movies (and life) and it’s also specific to slash writers.

And yes it’s your misogyny showing, internalised or not.

Do better. The fact that anyone could see a woman who spent years looking after a mother with dementia as a villain because she needed time to fucking find herself after her mother passed is genuinely disgusting.

at this point I honestly think that criticising art — or anything subjective — is at the very least worthless and at worst is just a really shitty way of treating both art and artists. and I’m not talking about like… people discussing and sharing their opinions about art. I’m talking people who get paid to call something “good” or “not good”.

I went to art school and we had critiques for every unit — so 5 per year. But the critiques weren’t about the person giving the critique. They were about the artist. Which meant instead of people being there specifically to tear us down, these were people who wanted to see us succeed— whatever that might mean to us, personally. Some of us wanted to shoot commercial photography, which meant their critiques really got into the more technical aspects of photography. Others are less photographers and more using the camera as a medium to create art, so our critiques focused on things like concepts and themes and all that fun shit. And they were able to do that and still push us to grow and be better at whatever we chose to do.

At no point during those two years did I think to myself “I need to stop doing this because I suck at it”, even though that’s literally what I was taught my whole life. And being in a space that actually fosters your creativity instead of tearing you down makes such a massive difference.

(And yeah I’m thinking of this cause of the steve martin doc lmfao… idk, I’m just not finding any value in tearing people down even if I personally didn’t enjoy what they made. It’s ridiculous pretending that won’t affect even seasoned artists, and for new artists it could destroy possible careers.

i have an aversion to watching IG/FB and yea, even youtube videos, but i have a friend who continually sends me all of those things. I’ve told her I don’t watch em (we just don’t have the same interests lmao). Yesterday i went as far as saying that cause i have my fb and IG accounts deactivated, I can’t physically watch the videos because the sites block them with a sign in page (lie) and she was like “oh shit got it!”.

I log on this morning to more videos she sent me 😭😭😭
