A character is built up as the antagonist only to die in the first trial. During a trial, a reasonably nice character is suspected by everyone and due to the length of the trial and the character being chosen by the player, it is made out to seem like they are the killer. However, they are innocent and become the game’s rival after proving their own innocence out of bitterness.

Motive: Truth or Hostage.
One of each of the participants loved ones are held captive and the participants must tell a damning secret about themself or risk their loved on dying. This continues until three hostages are killed.
Those who told their secret now have it out in the open, those who let their loved one die are now seen as cowards or heartless and if three people have died before all students take their turns, they are seen as having gotten lucky and resented.

The double murder takes place during the second chapter but in a locked room, meaning the students are unable to see the body and that the second trial does not count. The students focus on the first killer as they on a time limit and they can figure out who killed the second victim later when not under the threat of death.
During the third chapter's daily life, they try to find out who killed the second victim but come up blank. After a murder is committed, the room is opened and now they have to solve the murders of two students.
The second chapter's second murder and the door opening turn out to have been the work of the same student, who wanted to personally kill off someone they disliked believing that since the body of the person they killed was discovered second they would survive. Monokuma clarifies that since the second murder rule is judged by the time the victim was killed and not when the body was discovered, they have just admitted to the crime and are executed.
The remaining students are now living with the murderer of the third chapter's victim.
