Solar Eclipse 2024

Best picture I could get with my phone. I really wasn't that concerned about getting a picture or video.

Arrival to Earth - Steve Jablonsky played during the entire duration of totality!

I got to experience the total solar eclipse! I am incredibly grateful to have witnessed this in person. My parents and I drove out of state to the path of totality. The drive had suprising very little traffic and the place we sat to watch had 4 cars total (including ours).

How It Went

It was AMAZING. I don't know what I was expecting but what I experienced was nothing short of spectacular.

The moments leading up to total coverage were sereal and a tiny bit anxiety producing. There was light but also dimness. It wasn't the same as dawn or dusk where the sky changes color. The sky stayed blue. I would compare it to putting a brightness filter for pcs on your eyes or wearing very weak sunglasses.

The moments leading up to and during the eclipse, I shuffled a playlist on my phone. It was ethereal. Right before the moment of totality and for the complete duration, the song Arrival to Earth - Steve Jablonsky played. It was a perfect song for this event!

Part way through, I took an ear bud out and listened for the birds as I remember someone who experienced the 2017 eclipse talk about how the birds went quiet during total coverage. I can confirm that the birds were noticeably quiter where I was. I didn't notice the temperature change much until the sun started to come back out. It was noticeably warmer.

The planning and drive was 100% worth it to have experienced this in person. 🌑

I have a habit of not watching (or even knowing the existence of most) Oscar nominated films until watching the Oscars. Poor Things was one of these films and it was nominated for a bunch of awards so I gave it a shot.

I can only describe it as an organized fever dream.

What stood out the most to me was the cinematography. It takes place in Victorian era Europe (a rather stretched reality). It has almost a fantasy vibe to it, the way certain scenes are lit or the way the sky looks. I often forgot that the movie even took place in the 19th century and not the future or some fantasy version of Earth. The score may have also helped with that. Much of the ost has a rather eerie tone to it. Almost disturbing yet alluring at the same time.

This movie is very graphic both in terms of gore and NSFW scenes.

Looks like those rumors about Tumblr and WordPress selling user training to AI companies were true. There's a registration wall for this article, but I'll include a few short screenshots from it.

So it seems like a bunch of data that shouldn't have been included for AI was queued up, including deactivated posts from blogs. According to the product manager at Tumblr, some of this this data will be removed.

It seems you can opt-out of having your posts scraped, but honestly this should be a opt-in feature. Ugh, it just feels like what we suffered through with DeviantArt all over again in terms of permission and consent.

I would encourage you to read the entire article for yourself (use a burner email, if the free registration wall bothers you.)

Personally, I'm glad I moved my WordPress.com blog to a self-hosted option just a few hours ago. It wasn't for this reason, but the timing couldn't be better. So yeah, I don't think I'll be recommending WordPress.com as a blogging option to anyone who asks. As for Tumblr, I guess we'll have to keep an eye on when we can opt out having our data fed to the gen AI machines. (And hope that these companies actually honor those requests, though I'm skeptical.)

Theory:

Viren isn't going to die and no one is going to have to be sacrificed.

Aaravos once said, "Those who fail tests of love are simple animals. They deserve to be motivated by fear". (S2E9)

Aaravos told Viren to sacrifice his child. Granted, Sparklepuff isn't Viren's in the traditional sense and he only just found out now. But he's been traveling with Sparklepuff for almost 30 days and getting to know the little guy. Plus, he just found out that he's his magical son.

But he clearly can't bring himself harm Sparklepuff even to save his own life. Even if he's a little screeching, gooey humunculus.

So, what if this was a test of love and Viren passed?

You also have to consider the spell itself. Infantis Sanguine. "The blood of your child". What if Viren didn't have any children to begin with? The spell would have no significance then. I don't believe Aaravos is being transparent with Viren.
