Hi there! Hope you're good. Can you please tell me what Steel is about? I actually didn't quiet get it... feel free to ignore if you don't wanna answer :)

Hi, Anon! Thanks so much for this question, it’s a great one. I had to think about it lol. After some thought, and in an attempt to not spoil much, this is what I came up with—

“Steel” is a narrative commentary on the dark side of the shinobi system, and the idea is the reader is looking at corruption through a third party perspective. We have two different figures watching Sakura fall from grace in real (sort of heh 😅) time, and we are watching how the (Shinobi) system poisons and consumes itself. Majority of the story is written from Sasuke or Kakashi’s perspective, with some small instances where we’re seeing through Sakura’s eyes. A hint— time is not linear, and events are not chronological. If you’re confused, don’t worry because you’re kind of supposed to be at this point. If I can manage to do it effectively, the story will slowly unravel itself until we reach the nucleus where all things come together.

The most important idea to keep in mind is that Sakura is attempting to right a long list of wrongs. But… the harder she works to fix things, the harder it is to escape.

This was the farthest place they have traveled as a foundling team. For the most part, the mission was easy. Not that escorting a daimyo back to his estate in the Land of Snow didn’t have the risks, but Kakashi made sure they took the less scenic route. Up the jagged path of the mountainside where a small misstep can send one spiraling off the cliffs. 

However, it cut the journey in half, and Kakashi unwisely allowed his students to indulge in sightseeing which Naruto took as a cue to go skating.

The orange dobe loves it of course, sweeping past from here to there with no ounce of grace or balance. His notion of skating involves ‘winging it’ — flailing with his arms up and about, sliding in large movements, and making snow angels on the glistening surface. 

Their sensei is content under a bare branched tree pretending to be asleep even when Sasuke knows he is reading that Icha Icha book under his cloak.

Sakura? Well, she’s skating around just fine. She’s naturally good at this just as she's good with chakra control. It’s just that the pesky Naruto is asking her to skate him him. Hand-in-hand.

“Don’t worry about Sasuke! He’ll never leave the side!” He even has the audacity to laugh.

Of course Sasuke knows how to skate. He’s just conserving his energy.

Sakura takes on Naruto’s request (much to Sasuke’s sudden and unexplainable chagrin) and pulls him for a loop. Round and round they go, faster and faster, until the orange flops on the ice and waves surrender. Having defeated one hyperactive teammate, she makes her way to her next target.

Sasuke wants to wipe that determined grin off her face. “No.”

“Come on Sasuke. It’s fun.” Her one hand is outstretched for an invitation. 

“I know how to skate Sakura.” He confidently lifts one supporting hand from the railing and waves. “See, I can balance just fine. I’m just resting.” 

Her arm swoops in from out of nowhere to grab his other hand that has been gripping the railing for his dear life and pulls him to the center of the ice.

Her laughter is all he hears besides his screaming.

It somehow reorients him — her nose scrunching, jade eyes disappearing behind closed lids, and face turning the shade of her hair. In the twirling chaos she pulled him in, he feels himself steer towards her center of gravity.

His leg unfortunately catches her heel, and they tumble like a deck of cards on the surface, limbs all over each other but eyes towards the sky.

“That was fun,” Sakura says in between gasps.

“Hn,” is his attempt at agreement.

From gray and desolate clouds descend a sprinkle of white and fluff. One lands on his nose which Sakura pokes with a finger. “It’s snowing, Sasuke.” She giggles like it’s the cutest discovery.

“It’s the first snow,” he breathes into the air and clutches her hand still in his.
