Highlights of 2017
1. Travel
Big trips, small trips & weekenders - there was a lot of travel in 2017!
The 1st major trip of the year was Jan/Feb to the UK, Norway, USA & Puerto Rico.
Top: London, Cambridge & Bergen
Bottom: Oslo, New York & San Juan
Tumblr media
The second big trip was in October to all the ‘hot spots’... Japan, South Korea & Russia.
Top: Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, & Ōkunoshima (Rabbit Island)
Bottom: Kyoto, Busan, Seoul & Vladivostok
Tumblr media
And a little closer to home... 4 days in Adelaide, a trip to Auckland in June, 2 Brisbane weekenders, 5 Melbourne weekends & just about every other weekend in between was spent in Sydney. The last trip of the year will be 6 days in Tassie.
Top: Brisbane, Glenelg, & Melbourne
Bottom: Auckland, Sydney & Vivid Sydney
Tumblr media
2. Musicals
The list of musicals I saw this year is very long, so if you want to skip to the end I’ve added 5 favorite productions in a bit more detail.
London: Lazarus & Rent
New York: The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, Dear Evan Hansen, In Transit, Waitress, The Great Comet & Sunset Boulevard
Brisbane: American Idiot & The Wizard of Oz
Melbourne: The Book of Mormon & Spring Awakening
Sydney: Nosferatutu, Cabaret, Calamity Jane, Big Fish, Only Heaven Knows, Mame, Between Worlds, Miss Saigon, Camelot, Melba, City of Angels, Assassins, Beautiful, Spring Awakening, Muriel's Wedding & High Fidelity
Favourites:
Dear Evan Hansen at the Music Box Theatre in January - this was an amazing musical that went on to win 6 Tony awards including Best Musical.
Sunset Boulevard at the Palace Theatre in February - Glenn Close reprised her role as Norma Desmond & even came to the stage door to sign Playbills.
The Book of Mormon at the Princess Theatre in May - I had seen the original Broadway cast in New York back in 2012 & was pleasantly surprised that the Melbourne cast were almost as good as the Broadway Cast.
Assassins at the Hayes Theatre in September - I enjoy a good Sondheim musical but this was one of the few I hadn’t seen before. I loved it!
Muriel's Wedding at The Roslyn Packer Theatre - after a few semi decent attempts (e.g. Priscilla), we finally have a great Australian musical. I hope this production goes all the way to Broadway! I enjoyed it so much I am going back to see it again!
Tumblr media
3. Conventions
This was my second year attending BroadwayCon in New York - after I survived the inaugural BroadwayCon during the record breaking blizzard in 2016 (in terms of snowfall this was the biggest blizzard since the records began back in the 1800′s). That convention was later referred to as ‘BlizzardCon’; 2017 in comparison was a tamer affair in regards to the weather that is. The con itself was bigger & in some ways better this year, but not as intimate - some of the highlights being the Dear Evan Hansen panel & performances by Lakes & Loose Cattle.
The rest of the convention year went like this:
Adelaide Oz Comic Con in April - photos with Jason Momoa (GOT/Aquaman), Arthur Darvill (Legends of Tomorrow), Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) & Sasha Roiz (Grimm).
Melbourne Supanova in April - photos with Cory Michael Smith (Gotham), David Boreanaz (Buffy/Angel), Mechad Brooks (Supergirl), Natalie Dormer (GOT) & Tom Hopper (Black Sails).
Melbourne All Hell Breaks Loose VIII (a Supernatural convention) in May - photos with Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki together, Jared Padalecki (separately) & Hilly & Hannah Hindi from the Hillywood Show.
Melbourne ThronesCon (a Game of Thrones convention) in May - group photo with Dominic Carter, Miltos Yerolemou & Ian Beatie.
Sydney Supanova in June - photos with Teri Hatcher & Dean Cain (Lois & Clark), Colin Donnell (Arrow), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) & Chris Hemsworth (Thor).
Melbourne Oz Comic Con in July - photos with Jason Momoa (GOT/Aquaman), Keegan Allen (Pretty Little Liars), Zach McGowan (Black Sails), Aly Michalka (iZombie), Rahul Kohli & Robert Buckley (iZombie), Alyson Hannigan (Buffy), DJ Qualls (Supernatural), Daniel Gillies (The Originals) & Eldon Henson (Daredevil).
Sydney Video Junkee in July.
Sydney Oz Comic Con in Sept/Oct - photos with Tim Rozen (Wynonna Earp), Jason Momoa (GOT/Aquaman), David Giuntoli (Grimm), Jenna Coleman (Victoria), Michael Malarkey & Matthew Davis (The Vampire Diaries) & Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story).
Melbourne Return to the Gate (a Stargate convention) in November - group photo with Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks & Amanda Tapping.
Brisbane Supanova in November - photos with Franz Drameh (Legends of Tomorrow), Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp) & Jodelle Ferland (Dark Matter).
Sydney All Hell Breaks Loose Krampus (a Supernatural convention) in December - photos with Alaina Huffman & Ruth Connell.
Tumblr media
4. Concerts
Just a few concerts this year, but they were all pretty amazing! Sierra Boggess, Clare Bowen, Elton John & Midnight Oil.
Tumblr media
5. Theatre
You can probably tell from the plays I attended this year that I like my Shakespeare. I especially enjoyed the Pop Up Globe in Melbourne where I saw Henry V & As You Like It. I enjoyed it so much that next month I’m heading back down to Melbourne to see the other plays in the rotation - Othello & Much Ado About Nothing.
New York: The Front Page
Melbourne: Macbeth, Henry V & As You Like it
Sydney: Measure for Measure, Superhal, Richard III, Mr Burns, The Rover, 1984, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest & The Merchant of Venice
Tumblr media
So those were the highlights of 2017 - but I also attended the symphony, went to the ballet in Sydney & London, the opera in Sydney & New York, took in some art exhibitions & even went to a couple of soccer matches.
There’s already a lot in store for 2018 (and even the remaining days of 2017 - boxing day harbour cruise & Tassie trip), and one of the things I’m most looking forward to is my next trip! Once again off to New York for some shows with 2 operas, 4 plays & 6 musicals already booked & a few time slots left to fill. Also on this trip I will finally be setting foot on the South American continent when I head down to Quito, Ecuador!
See you in 2018! Xx

So the Fantasticks was not so fantastic, but I can definitely say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed everything else the Hayes has offered up so far. Looking forward to seeing the upcoming shows in the 2018 season, especially In the Heights, Aspects of Love & American Psycho.
Now let’s discuss some of the productions the Hayes should do next… here’s just a few I think would work well in this intimate space, and a few I am just dying to see (or see again):
Murder Ballad - Played Off Broadway to great success, and has a killer opening number!
Hedwig & the Angry Inch - John Cameron Mitchell has mentioned bringing the recent Broadway production to Oz…eventually, but wouldn’t that be an amazing show to put on at this venue!
Stephen Ward - I’m not sure what ALW’s plans are with this great little show, but I don’t think it would really work at one of the big Sydney theatres.
Jasper in Deadland - Someone needs to get the rights to this, I’ve been dying to see it again after seeing the ‘Off Off Broadway’ engagement. It’s destined for bigger & better things.
Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 - One of my favourites!
Spring Awakening - Why haven’t they done this yet?
Sunday in the Park with George - How bout some more Sondheim... after Assassins was such a hit! Sweeney Todd would be good also.
Tick Tick Boom - I just really want to see a production of this anywhere.
Sunset Boulevard - Possibly too ambitious for this theatre, but they have done other big ticket musicals.
Martin Guerre - Cameron Mackintosh… what are you doing with this musical, is it making a comeback or not?! I wonder if the rights are available in Australia?
Reefer Madness - Just for a bit of fun.

New York - Hotels
Tumblr media
Everyone knows how much I love New York and I am often asked for recommendations on New York Hotels. The following list is not necessarily recommendations, just a summary of the hotels I have stayed at including my thoughts on location & price.
Guide on prices - prices fluctuate depending on the time of year, but I’ve tried to categorise it by either cheap, moderate or expensive based on the dates I stayed. With cheap being under $100 (spoiler - none of the hotels fall into this category), moderate between $100 - $200 and expensive being over $200 per night (all prices in AUD including fees/taxes & based on the exchange rate at the time).
Four Points by Sheraton Midtown - Times Square (22-27 April 2011)
Location: 326 W 40th St - Midtown (Garment District)
Closest subway: 42 St - Port Authority Bus Terminal Station - A/C/E
Price: Expensive - averaging a bit over $200 per night
My personal opinion is that Midtown is the best area to stay in while visiting New York as you are close to all the major subway lines, the theatre district & Times Square (although the more times you visit the less you want to be in Times Square & try to avoid it at all cost!). The hotel is very close to A/C/E line, again it’s my personal opinion that this is the best subway line to be close to as the E train goes to/from JFK & the A train run the entire length of Manhattan before heading over to Brooklyn/Queens. Although this hotel is on the expensive side, it’s a decent price for the location & a fairly modern hotel.
Link : http://www.fourpointstimessquare.com/
Tumblr media
The Empire Hotel (27-30 April 2011)
Location: 44 W 63rd St - Upper West Side (Lincoln Square)
Closest subway: 66 St - Lincoln Center Subway Station - 1
Also close to 59 St - Columbus Circle Station - 1, A/C & B/D
Price: Expensive - averaging around $325 per night
This is a classic boutique hotel which was featured heavily in the TV show Gossip Girl. Although this hotel is further uptown than I would normally prefer, it’s a great location if attending a performance at the Lincoln Center (opera, ballet, classical music, cinema, theatre) & is also close to Central Park. There are also multiple subway lines within walking distance & a Century 21 department store close by. Being a boutique hotel it is quite expensive, but it’s a great experience to stay at such an iconic hotel with all that New York charm you see in the movies.

Tumblr media
Wyndham Garden Long Island City Manhattan View (10-16 April 2012)
Location: 44-29 9th St - Long Island City (Queens)
Closest subway: Court Square-23 St Station - E & M
Price: Moderate - averaging around $125 per night
When it’s too expensive to stay in Manhattan, Queens is a good option… especially when there are great views of the Manhattan skyline. The location itself is more on the industrial side & the streets are very dark/quiet late at night but the trip into the city isn’t too bad - a bit over 5 minutes walk to the closest subway station & approx 15 minutes ride to Times Sq.

Tumblr media
Hotel Belleclaire (2-9 January 2013)
Location: 250 W 77th St - Upper West Side
Closest subway: 79 St Station - 1
Price: Moderate - averaging just under $110 per night
Part of the Triumph Hotels group which has a number of boutique hotels in Manhattan, the Belleclaire is an excellent example of the beautiful old architecture of the Upper West Side. The hotel has a fascinating history & has housed some prominent guests in the past. The downside is the location being so far uptown & only having 1 nearby subway station that’s served by only 1 line. A 10-15 minute walk will get you to Central Park or the American Museum of Natural History. I believe the price at the time was discounted due to renovation works, so prices may be heading towards the expensive price range now.

Tumblr media
Z NYC Hotel (8-16 October 2013)
Location: 11-01 43rd Ave - Long Island City (Queens)
Closest subway: 21 St - Queensbridge Station - F
Also nearby & probably a better option is Queensboro Plaza Station - 7 & N/W
Price: Expensive - averaging just under $240 per night
Autumn in New York is EXPENSIVE & this was at a time when the exchange rate was almost dollar for dollar! Queens, although still expensive, is a good option at this time of year if you don’t want to stay in shared accommodation. The hotel itself is chic & modern however located in a heavily industrial/commercial  area, but it does have some great views of Manhattan & especially of the Queensboro bridge. You will have to walk almost 10 minutes to get to a subway station - there are options north, east & south with around 6 different subway lines to choose from.

Tumblr media
West Side YMCA (12-25 April 2014)
Location: 5 W 63rd St - Upper West Side (Lincoln Square)
Closest subway: 59 St - Columbus Circle Station - 1, A/C & B/D
Price: Moderate - averaging just over $100 per night
In a similar location to the Empire Hotel, but a lot cheaper. The accommodation wasn’t shared however the bathrooms were shared. Saying that, the bathrooms were all individual shower/toilets just outside the rooms & operated by a key card. If you’re lucky, your room might have a decent view of Central Park. This isn’t the type of accommodation I would normally choose, but when money is tight & your staying for a couple of weeks… it’ll do.

Tumblr media
Washington Jefferson Hotel (my preferred hotel - multiple dates)
Location: 318 W 51st St - Midtown (Hell’s Kitchen)
Closest subway: 50 St Station - C/E or just a block east is the 50st 1 train
Price: 20 Feb - 6 March 2015 - averaging around $130 per night
Price: 11 - 24 January 2016 - averaging just over $150 per night
Price: 24 Jan - 3 Feb 2017 - averaging just under $140 per night
Price: 23 Feb - 9 March 2018 - averaging just over $150 per night
Once I discovered the Washington Jefferson, I stopped hotel hopping & have stayed here every trip since 2015 including my upcoming trip. Starting with the location - it’s just around the corner from the E line which means it’s an easy trip to/from JFK & I don’t have to drag my suitcase around for very long. There are also other stations just 1-2 blocks away covering a few different subway lines. This location is very close to the theatre district so I never have to get the subway to see a Broadway show & some of the off Broadway theatres are also nearby like New World Stages. There is a Pret A Manger right around the corner where I normally stop for breakfast & the Food Emporium is just a couple blocks south. One thing I love about this hotel is that it’s in a central location but just outside the hustle & bustle of the Times Square area so it’s not too noisy. The price is fairly reasonable coming in at just under $100 USD per night - of course this is before taxes & the occupancy fee is added. The room type I book is the Petite room, like the name it is quite petite but it’s just a place to lay my head between all the shows, shopping & sight seeing (yes, after all those trips there are still plenty of sights to see). Last time I stayed one of the security guards said ‘welcome back’ as I arrived! This place I definitely recommend!

Why you should see The Book of Mormon!
Tumblr media
Hello! My name is Elder Jordan & I would like to share with you the most amazing book. Let’s begin with my Book of Mormon backstory...
I’m gonna take you back to biblical times: 1823. Or 2011 rather. On my very first trip to NYC back in April 2011, The Book of Mormon had just opened on Broadway - I’d seen the signs, walked past the theatre, but alas... I did not buy myself a ticket. One of my biggest regrets!
Less than a year later in April 2012, I made sure I had a ticket... no matter what the cost! And it was pretty damn expensive, even with the awesome exchange rate at the time. Luckily, even though the show had been running for just over 12 months, the original cast were still in the production including Andrew Rannells as Elder Price & Josh Gad as Elder Cunningham. Of course I stage-doored after the show & they both signed my playbill & my souvenir program!
Tumblr media
So it only took about 6 years for the show to come to Australia.... typical! I mean the West End got it in 2013 & there have been 2 regional US tours!
Anyway, for the uninformed the show is currently playing in Melbourne & it looks like it will be there for a good long while. You can wait for it to eventually come to Sydney or you can hop a cheap flight right now!!!
If this show has only recently come across your radar let me begin by saying - where have you been the past 5+ years?? Secondly, here are some interesting tidbits (relating to the Broadway production) to explain just how popular this show is:
It won 9 Tony Awards in 2011 including Best Musical
The only time the show was ever under 100% capacity at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre was in the first week & a half of previews
Average weekly capacity is 102.42%
Between 24/2/11 - 5/2/17 the total number of seats sold was 2,715,139
Finally, the production is on track to gross over $500 million by the middle of the year & is ranked in the top 10 highest grossing Broadway productions of all time
If you don’t know anything about the show... in a tiny, tiny nutshell it’s about a couple of Mormons who go on a mission to Africa - you can Wikipedia the rest. What you do need to know is the show is extremely smart, funny & it’s just very well written. The songs are so catchy & so memorable that you will have them running through your head for days! My favourite thing about the show is that it’s full of clever pop culture references. Here are a few examples:
Wow! So the Bible is really a trilogy, and the Book of Mormon is Return of the Jedi? I'm interested
Uganda! Cool!  Where is that? Africa! Oh boy! Like Lion King!
[Spirit of JOHNNIE COCHRAN in Spooky Mormon Hell Dream] I got O.J. freed!
And the Lord said, "If you lay with an infant, you shall...burn in the fiery pits of Mordor!"
Hasa Diga Eebowai! Well, that's pretty neat! Does it mean no worries for the rest of our days? Kind of!
Then a great wizard named Moroni came down from the Starship Enterprise
Finally, the musical style of most of the songs include, or are parodies of other well known musical numbers. It’s truly a brilliant show, just don’t take your kids!
So believe the hype & get on board!

Broadway Theatres
There are currently 40 operating Broadway theatres, with the 41st due to open in late 2016. I have been lucky enough to visit three quarters of them so far.
