max nolastname and John silver (fake name) are twins of not caring about the wider world beyond their own survival (and of their loves) because the world has kicked them far too many times for them to think they can change it. max being a slave and the daughter of her master, then subjected to the brutal life of a sex worker serving pirates. silver being [REDACTED]. they both believe there will always be a boot on the necks of the weak, that it's simply how the world is. destroying England will only allow for a boot of a different color to take its place. they will keep their heads down and nod and make a show of obeying so they are trusted and liked by the boot, while plotting for their own survival in secret. the devil you know, etc. they are both incredibly cynical and misanthropic. they detest bloodshed not for its cruelty but for how it stirs people up and unsettles what could be a peaceful (in their worldview) existence.
max, once she experienced having every ounce of control taken away from her, entrenched herself in a position where she was in complete control of her own fate, one where she ruled from the shadows but still appears to obey the boot. even if it eats away at her, even if it takes everything personal from her. unfortunately for silver, his rise to power (and in opposition to the boot) was not his own doing and is a prison for him as much as it is his lifeline. as a disabled man, he would have no option of survival under the boot, so he has to live in this undead prison Billy has crafted for him which stands in direct opposition to how he believes the world to be. and in many ways he views flint as the new boot, or at least allows him to take that position in his mind. silver obeys him most of the time, nods and keeps his head down until he plots for his (and madi's) survival
and they're both so good at this trickery that you forget who they are. you're told in the first episode what type of people they are -- opportunists, through and through. but they're likable. you want to believe them to be different. but they arent. max doesn't oppose her former allies being hanged; she just thinks it's bad for morale and thus ruins her business interests. silver doesn't care about the war; he suggested it only so the maroons wouldn't kill them and then ended the war once he realised the danger inherent to him and Madi. the rest of Nassau and the rest of the slaves toiling in the new world are of little concern to either one of them. what fascinating characters

idk i think what is interesting about astarion to me is the fact that you have a guy who started out an asshole (normal type) and then spent two hundred years in a very carefully and specifically crafted (by the writers of the game) Become A Terrible Person Or Die nexus. like it wasn’t just a Torment Nexus, he wasn’t just in hell, i feel like this is very important not to forget, he was in hell but it was specifically a hell designed to, over time, kill the empathy of anyone trapped in it, kill their brain’s ability to prioritize other peoples’ survival, to numb one’s conscience.
and then he gets yanked directly out of that nexus and despite that the fact that he spent, again, two hundred years in a situation that was sort of a rock tumbler for the human soul, there’s still a pebble left in there. and it’s a pebble that can be grown if placed in the right environment and provided with a support network.
so i think it becomes interesting because it really does i think force you to start thinking about the limits of free will even on as basic a level as the human personality. i think the fact that he becomes such a different character based on player choice, that his end morality is so hugely dependent on player choice, is uhhh. a big part of what the devs were going for probably.
it makes a lot of people really uncomfortable to acknowledge some bad people would be good people if literally nothing changed except they had a good support network and different circumstances. especially because it means the opposite is also true. which is even more uncomfortable.
you know that part in the beginning of fellowship of the ring where gandalf is talking about how gollum is ultimately only like that because of the ring and gandalf thinks his story is sad? astarion is kinda like if they sexualized gollum.

You know, I'm going to voice an unpopular opinion. Potential trigger warning for discussion of sexual abuse. I'm gonna come out and say that I'm fine with the fact that you can't romance Astarion without sleeping with him BECAUSE hypersexuality in response to sexual trauma is so rarely discussed or portrayed. And I can't think of any other time it was portrayed so respectfully. Him doing that actually woke me up because I've done the same. Rushing into sex because you assume that's what the other person wants, generally and from you. I would argue his arc would not be the same without that pivotal moment. Because I personally think it was the experience of sharing intimacy with a caring person that made him realize the potential for what intimacy could be and was a factor in taking that step back in act 2. So while I get why people are frustrated with the option to not sleep with him not being there, I'd like you to take a closer look at the character and recognize why it's actually really important that it can't be any other way.

For those who write that Astarion wanted a friend more than a lover.
Tumblr media
If you were in a relationship with him, he says a different phrase after the ritual in the spawn ending:
"And nice as it would have been to share this with a partner. I'm glad I get to share it with a friend."
My man still thinks that he would like you to be together.

One of my favorite things about Gale being autistic coded is how the writing doesn't rely on stereotypes used in other media to depict autistic people.
He's not some nonhuman entity trying to grapple at humanisms and it's played for jokes, nor is he some sexless innocent child who must be protected at all costs. This is a human man who could easily be in his 40's. He's accomplished and respected both by his former peers in his field of work, but also by your party members. And sure he's a little silly, and he wants to talk about magic and his tressym, and poetry, and food, but these things are treated as neutral at worst by the writing. You can bypass figuring out whole puzzles because guess what? This puzzle happens to line up with one of Gale's special interests, so he knows how to solve it! And for things that he has some interest in, but he doesn't know everything about, he'll have a comment about it meant to nudge the player in the correct direction. Not only that, but Gale hyperfixating on something is part of getting the good ending of the game.
And he's definitely not treated as some sexless innocent being who should not be engaged with sexually. His flirting is a little awkward at times, but it's sincere and earnest. He's also very frank about liking and desiring sex when it comes up. That's on top of other characters outside your own finding Gale sexually desirable. Astarion thinks he's sexy. The drow twins think Gale is sexy.
It's just...so refreshing to have a mature, intelligent, desirable autistic coded character.

i sincerely believe that nobody actually hates gale bc of that approval glitch a few months back. i think that, just like when people say he talks too much, it’s a veil for people to express their internalized ableism. they simply find gale annoying bc he displays very obvious neurodivergent behaviors and haven’t unpacked their internalized ableism. so they frame it as disliking that he was “clingy” or disliking that he “talks too much.” as if shadowheart hasn’t told me she wants to be a dark justiciar 5 times and as if astarion hasn’t had something to say to me like every time i long rest at the beginning of acts 1 and 2. the ableism is hiding in plain sight, i feel. from what i’ve seen, neurodivergent gale fans are in agreement that he infodumps. and then there’s the way that he articulates his love for the pc in a romance through the weave/magic, which definitely struck a cord with me and how my neurodivergency influences the way i think about love, sex, and intimacy. i don’t think it’s fruitful to complain about gale hate without acknowledging that it’s largely ableism.
