This is Chatham (Jarine Myers), one of western Ontario’s oldest communities. She’s 5′8 and fairly strong (even if her peak was in the 40′s).
Personality
- She tries to be kind and help everyone she can, but can get frustrated very easily, and can’t get along with a lot of people. She tries to bottle up her emotions a lot to always seem like the calm, mature person she’s supposed to be, but is constantly on edge, and prone to breakdowns when no one is around.
- She’s often in a lot of stress, especially when she thinks about the future, because she doesn’t know what will happen to her. She used to be very prosperous and really popular, but now thing’s are going much worse for her and her community with the loss of many factories in the region, so she tries to focus on the past (a bit too much) and likes to stick to her traditions and celebrate her nostalgia.
- She loves old cars. Chatham is the “Classic Car Capital of Canada” for a reason! She’s also very knowledgeable on agriculture, and can be found either in the fields or working on her cars almost exclusively. This is also why she owns so many coveralls.
Background
- Chatham was founded in 1794, and so is quite old, but with the War of 1812 just a few years later, she and surrounding towns had to mature extremely quickly. Chatham was an extremely important location during the war and was involved in several battles, but was also the site of one of the few battles won by the US during it.
- During the 1850′s, Chatham was a centre of anti-slavery activity, and was one of the northern terminuses of the Underground Railroad, bringing thousands of victims of slavery into Canada.
- Agriculture is a staple of southern Ontarian economy. With some of the most fertile land in all of Canada, Chatham-Kent is an area that’s very proud of its farming industry (just call it the number one producer of tomatoes, seed corn, and sugar beets in Canada).
- Recently, several important factories in the region have closed or moved their business elsewhere, severely impacting the community and destroying thousands of jobs. Chatham used to be a blue collar town, and still has the pride of one, but is still struggling with their loss. She had a difficult childhood, and is still struggling to stay afloat, but she’s keeping her head and spirits up.
Relationships
- Chatham is off the 401, and is connected, at least slightly, to big cities like Toronto and Montreal, but usually doesn’t make any big impacts in any of those cities (except maybe to supply their food).
- She has very close relationships to other towns in the municipality of Chatham-Kent, like Wallaceburg, and visits them frequently (also, they host way better barn parties than she does).
- She’s right close to the southern border of Canada, and will honestly visit Detroit more often than she does Toronto, and she’s constantly torn between their sports teams (the Winter Classic gets rough).
- She’s seen by a lot of surrounding cities as a hick or a simple farmer, and while slightly self conscious about no longer being retail hub like she was, she’s now proud of her farmer’s tan.

Those Eyes are the Stars, that all Light my Way
Evelyn H. MacKay-Barr (April 2016)
Those eyes are the stars, that all light my way, His voice: a river, that flows ‘neath my feet, Her smile marks the beginning of my day, Their hearts have the love to make me complete.
You see two souls joined in a partnership, The type of bond we all seek in this life. It won’t be long ‘till they start to trip, ‘Till they push me away with their tongue’s knife.
Like many before and many to come, They search for reasons to have me removed. Yet still the thought of them makes my heart thrum, A pain I know well, that cannot be soothed.
A brutal cycle of give and of take, Until I find love that can halt this ache.

Deep Eyes Rich, like the Fertile Lands They Reap
Evelyn H. MacKay-Barr (April 2016)
Deep eyes rich, like the fertile land they reap, Gift solace to the unfeeling heavens. Turning to her only in twilight sleep, She leaves no memories of her beckons.
By watching, she learns to weep when they die, Because he can thrive off of her sadness. They have his love, but still yearn for the sky, So he comes to resent all her kindness.
Warm gaze turned cold to this unknown foe, Her gales and thunders call out in despair. For it was his smile that made her heart grow, Then set the spark of her anger aflare.
A god loves not easy as mortals might, Now he and his bairns live by her in fright.
