Please make a post about the story of the RMS Carpathia, because it's something that's almost beyond belief and more people should know about it.
Carpathia received Titanic’s distress signal at 12:20am, April 15th, 1912. She was 58 miles away, a distance that absolutely could not be covered in less than four hours.
(Californian’s exact position at the time is…controversial. She was close enough to have helped. By all accounts she was close enough to see Titanic’s distress rockets. It’s uncertain to this day why her crew did not respond, or how many might not have been lost if she had been there. This is not the place for what-ifs. This is about what was done.)
Carpathia’s Captain Rostron had, yes, rolled out of bed instantly when woken by his radio operator, ordered his ship to Titanic’s aid and confirmed the signal before he was fully dressed. The man had never in his life responded to an emergency call. His goal tonight was to make sure nobody who heard that fact would ever believe it.
All of Carpathia’s lifeboats were swung out ready for deployment. Oil was set up to be poured off the side of the ship in case the sea turned choppy; oil would coat and calm the water near Carpathia if that happened, making it safer for lifeboats to draw up alongside her. He ordered lights to be rigged along the side of the ship so survivors could see it better, and had nets and ladders rigged along her sides ready to be dropped when they arrived, in order to let as many survivors as possible climb aboard at once.
I don’t know if his making provisions for there still being survivors in the water was optimism or not. I think he knew they were never going to get there in time for that. I think he did it anyway because, god, you have to hope.
Carpathia had three dining rooms, which were immediately converted into triage and first aid stations. Each had a doctor assigned to it. Hot soup, coffee, and tea were prepared in bulk in each dining room, and blankets and warm clothes were collected to be ready to hand out. By this time, many of the passengers were awake–prepping a ship for disaster relief isn’t quiet–and all of them stepped up to help, many donating their own clothes and blankets.
And then he did something I tend to refer to as diverting all power from life support.
Here’s the thing about steamships: They run on steam. Shocking, I know; but that steam powers everything on the ship, and right now, Carpathia needed power. So Rostron turned off hot water and central heating, which bled valuable steam power, to everywhere but the dining rooms–which, of course, were being used to make hot drinks and receive survivors. He woke up all the engineers, all the stokers and firemen, diverted all that steam back into the engines, and asked his ship to go as fast as she possibly could. And when she’d done that, he asked her to go faster.
I need you to understand that you simply can’t push a ship very far past its top speed. Pushing that much sheer tonnage through the water becomes harder with each extra knot past the speed it was designed for. Pushing a ship past its rated speed is not only reckless–it’s difficult to maneuver–but it puts an incredible amount of strain on the engines. Ships are not designed to exceed their top speed by even one knot. They can’t do it. It can’t be done.
Carpathia’s absolute do-or-die, the-engines-can’t-take-this-forever top speed was fourteen knots. Dodging icebergs, in the dark and the cold, surrounded by mist, she sustained a speed of almost seventeen and a half.
No one would have asked this of them. It wasn’t expected. They were almost sixty miles away, with icebergs in their path. They had a responsibility to respond; they did not have a responsibility to do the impossible and do it well. No one would have faulted them for taking more time to confirm the severity of the issue. No one would have blamed them for a slow and cautious approach. No one but themselves.
They damn near broke the laws of physics, galloping north headlong into the dark in the desperate hope that if they could shave an hour, half an hour, five minutes off their arrival time, maybe for one more person those five minutes would make the difference. I say: three people had died by the time they were lifted from the lifeboats. For all we know, in another hour it might have been more. I say they made all the difference in the world.
This ship and her crew received a message from a location they could not hope to reach in under four hours. Just barely over three hours later, they arrived at Titanic’s last known coordinates. Half an hour after that, at 4am, they would finally find the first of the lifeboats. it would take until 8:30 in the morning for the last survivor to be brought onboard. Passengers from Carpathia universally gave up their berths, staterooms, and clothing to the survivors, assisting the crew at every turn and sitting with the sobbing rescuees to offer whatever comfort they could.
In total, 705 people of Titanic’s original 2208 were brought onto Carpathia alive. No other ship would find survivors.
At 12:20am April 15th, 1912, there was a miracle on the North Atlantic. And it happened because a group of humans, some of them strangers, many of them only passengers on a small and unimpressive steam liner, looked at each other and decided: I cannot live with myself if I do anything less.
I think the least we can do is remember them for it.

Not to mention the fact that he put in a lot of different representation including but not limited to: Egyptian/middle eastern men and women, African American/black men and women, a genderfluid/non binary person(can't remember if they were nb or genderfluid atm so I'm putting both) as well as many representation of ADHD and dyslexia. In fact ADHD and dyslexia play a major characteristic in pretty much all of his protags and side characters. Add on to that the fact that his female characters were not just there for romantic tension, but were truly vital for the story arc overall, and he nailed everything modern media often fails to and/or doesn't even bother to represent Rick Riordan didn't just start the revolution, he shot it off like a rocket. Until his books it was rare for a representation filled book or series to become world wide in popularity. In fact, for me and probably for quite a few of us, his books were the first real representation of LGBT, ADHD, non-white dominant etc. Characters in media. Rick Riordan is a damn legend and I will die by this statement
rick riordan really went there with the original percy jackson series.. he wrote a story about a kid with adhd living in an abusive, low income household who realizes that the generation before him created a world that he and the rest of his generation could not possibly thrive in and then refused to acknowledge that the society they crafted was detrimental to their children,, percy must make the decision to demand change in the end;
meanwhile his antagonist is a blond haired blue eyed kid from one of the top 20 richest towns in the united states who should have had it all but was denied it, causing him to come to the same realization years before percy ever does, but he believes the answer to their problems is to look to the past, to the traditions and methods of the Good Old Days without recognizing that the corruption and depravity of that era will only continue the cycle if they are implemented in the present day – luke believes the world needs to return to its former glory whereas percy realizes that the system will always be corrupt if they don’t invest in an entirely new way to support the younger generation and basically what im saying is rick riordan has been stoking the revolution in us since middle school

What's funny is I had just read this post when my mom had me run food to her neighbor who's moving. Stood there for five minutes while staring at her to make sure she sat down and ate. As an American, I can say this post is extremely and scarily on point
Note to vacationing non-Americans: while it’s true that America doesn’t always have the best food culture, the food in our restaurants is really not representative of what most of us eat at home.  The portions at Cheesecake Factory or IHOP are meant to be indulgent, not just “what Americans are used to.”
If you eat at a regular American household, during a regular meal where they’re not going out of their way to impress guests, you probably will not be served twelve pounds of chocolate-covered cream cheese.  Please bear this in mind before writing yet another “omg I can’t believe American food” post.

Lol I was just told my laziness is addicting. That my own laziness sucks away everyone's energy so all they think is 'I don't want to do that today' and 'I don't want to move' and honestly that's kind of accurate

I kind of want to start a side blog. However this blog would focus primarily about myths and legends and old stories of ancient cultures and each post would focus on one myth from one culture. So for example one of the most well known myths of Helenism(A.K.A Greek Mythology) about the abduction of Persephone and the making of the seasons.
I would focus first on the most widely known aspects of the story, then venture into the less known versions, and then maybe pick apart symbolism of the story's details. But i would do myths abd legends from around the world and throughout history too. Roman Mythology. Egyptian. Cherokee. Chinese. Japanese. Aztec. The works you know? I just don't know if anyone would actually care enough to follow along? I want to do something more that just run a sporadically posted fanfic blog(voltron primarily atm) and It would be an educational thing while also exploring cultures other than my own so It would be extremely inclusive as well.
It would probably be called brittysaucemyths or brittysaucelegends or something like that. And i would post once a week, then work up to more if it gains popularity. Would anyone be interested in that?

My older brother was the one who got this more than my grandparents didn't when I was young. For example. My older brother, who is six years my senior, and I both love to read. And he had this book series that he loved to read. It wasn't anything difficult, it was just Cassandra Clare's first three shadowhunter books. I was maybe ten or eleven when I had decided that I wanted to read it. He explained to me that I might not understand it just yet since its a little more advanced than the things I read at the time. However, he let me borrow it when I was adamant that I wanted to read it. I didn't even get through the first chapter when I realized I couldn't understand it. He told me not to be upset, and that I should just get more used to reading higher level things before trying again. I went back to it after a year and I read the entire first book. Then I read the next two. And today it still remains on my shelf as one of my favorite series. He understood that i was smart and that i COULD read something more advanced but that my own knowledge of words weren't big enough yet. During that year hiatus before I went back to it I read other books that became increasingly advanced until I was already reading at a college level, and when I went back to City of Bones, it was like reading my own name. He did the same thing with me in math. And science. And history. Children aren't dumb. They just have a lower level of vocabulary and if the big words were explained then they could understand it like any other adult.
i don’t think we acknowledge enough that when children want to be treated “like adults” what they really mean is “like people”
this is just my own observations of course but 90% of the time when a kid tries to get people to treat them like an adult, what they really want is the respect and acknowledgement that they associate with adulthood - because that’s what they must give the adults. they have to give that to the adults in their lives, but the adults never give that same respect back, and so they see that difference and decide that they want to be treated “like an adult”
and sometimes i see parents who are like fine you want to be treated like an adult then you can work and pay rent but that’s the exact OPPOSITE of what the kid is actually asking for. you’re just belittling them, clearly intending to punish them for daring ask for your respect, clearly intending for them to break down and beg to be “treated like a child” again because you purposefully twisted their wants. they ask for respect, and you give them abuse.
never, ever, ever, treat a child like a full grown adult. it’s our responsibility as adults NOT to, because they ARENT adults no matter how much they think they want to be, and it’s our job as adults to take care of them.
that said, ALWAYS treat children like people. because they ARE that. they’re real people with real agency acting as best as they know to with what knowledge they have
it’s not a matter of kids trying to grow up too fast, it’s a matter of kids wanting to be treated like people instead of objects or pets.

Commissions
Okay so a few things. My Tumblr is not up to date like my AO3 and I KNOW I should fix it but its like sooooo much work my friend. Maybe I'll get it done since I'm in isolation now, and hopefully I'll figure out how to do the whole schedule thing.
So I lost my job due to this whole quarantine thing happening right now so I want to start doing fic commissions. So here's how it will work.
10k and under- $1
11k-30k- $2
31k-50k- $4
51k and up- $5
If it's an original you want and not a fanfic add two dollars to each size.
I do not write rape fics or pedophilia. (However a lot people think a 20 year old with an 18 year old is pedophilia, so I'll still look at commissions and make my decision on whether it is or not)
This does not have to be a Voltron fanfic, just let me know the fandom you want and the characters and whatnot, and I'll do my very best.
If you guys are willing to help a broke girl out and get a cheap personalized fic for cheap, I'd really appreciate it. If not it's cool. My Cash App is $Br1ttysauce and my Venmo is @BrittySauce. Unfortunately my PayPal is acting up so until it's fixed I can't use it. If you can't spare any money I get it! I'd appreciate it if you just signal boosted this so more people see it and hopefully want to do a commission from me. Thanks for everything guys!

hi, sorry what’s happening rn in italy? Which are the updates?
All ‘unnecessary’ businesses are now shut down as part of the complete quarantine. That includes everything from clothing shops, bar, restaurants, cafes, ‘unnecessary’ factories to beauty parlours and hair salons, along with schools, universities, museums, gyms, etc. Pharmacies, supermarkets, banks, police stations, mail services, public transport and ‘basic necessity food shops’ (such as delicatessens and fish sellers) can stay open.
As before, people are allowed ‘short walks outside as long as they’re on their own’, but are now banned from leaving their village/hometown, except for work commutes (which they have to prove). Other than that, they can only go outside for emergencies, necessities (eg groceries) and health reasons, and have to present a self-certification document if stopped by the police – false claims are punishable by jail time (3 months). No public gatherings, no visiting people/relatives/friends, and yes, police are patrolling. People have to stay at home. Outside, minimum distance from each other is one metre.
We are now at 12.462 Covid 19 cases, 827 deaths and 1.045 recoveries. Hospitals in Northern Italy are seriously struggling because there’s not enough ITU for everyone. Doctors have to prioritise who to cure, based on how likely they are to recover. If the number of cases rise in other parts of the country, the entire healthcare system will risk a collapse.  So, if you can, please donate to the following hospitals - if not, please spread the word:
Ospedale Niguarda (Milan)
Ospedale Maggiore (Cremona)
Ospedale Fatebenefratelli (Naples)
Policlinico di Catania
ASST Lecco
Ospedale Sant’Anna (Como)
Ospedale San Matteo (Pavia)
Terapia Intensiva di Padova
Azienda Ospedaliera Pugliese-Ciaccio (Catanzaro)
GOM Reggio Calabria
Santa Maria Nuova (Reggio Emilia)
Ospedale Cotugno (Naples)
Ospedale Umberto I (Enna)
Piedmont crisis unit
Novara’s hospital (Piedmont)
Ospedali di Messina
In this Twitter thread, you will find several other links to donate to.
It’s not easy, so thank you for your help.

Voltron Translate
So I was organizing my google docs so it isn’t so cluttered and was fixing a fic of mine called Acting is Easy, Loving is harder, which is an acting Au (duh) and I’ve also been learning some Spanish lately right? So I recognized the character Hunk plays in the story’s nickname Suyo (Full name Tsuyoshi) as a Spanish word and then went wild with google translate and guys. I’m dying. I started typing as I learned right after Kuron so every word and name on there with the parenthesis have my actual reactions.
Zarkon- Hausa (don’t know that language but I love it now) for Tramps
Suyo- Spanish for Yours
Para(Pidge’s character)- Spanish for For
Farla (Allura’s character)- Italian for It
Romelle- Southern Sotho(??) for Send
Amue (Romelle’s character) doesn’t translate to anything but the pronunciation is ey-moo
Kuron- Albanian for Cures
Antok- Filipino for fucking Party (I died laughing for this one)
Ulaz- Bosnian for Entrance
Shirogane- Japanese for Platinum (love it)
Kogane- Japanese for Golden (I dig it)
Allura- Maltese for Then
Shiro- Japanese for White
Galra- Hungarian for GalR (what the Fuck does that mean?)
Altean- Basque (??) for In Another
Olkari- Somali for Tutor (that works)
Thace- Scottish Gaelic for Support (that fits his character pretty well actually)
Zeppo(as in Emperor Zeppo of the Drule Empire, not of VLD but one of the older ones)- Italian for Packed (there’s a lot more from the old versions but this was the only one I really cared to find out about and now I’m upset that it’s so boring)
Acxa- Esperanto for Go On
Ezor- Bulgarian for Pond (why??)
The motto of the Empire Vrepit sa- Vrepit alone is Bulgarian for Will Hang, Vrepit Sa is Bulgarian for They Are Bored (honestly this is my favorite as of this point)
Prorok (as in the Prorok RoBeast)- Russian for Prophet (cool but like, so doesn’t fit right)
Komar (as in the planet killing death ray Haggar made)- Polish for Mosquito (and it totally fits)
Arusian- Malay for Flow
Lubos (as in the original ruler of Olkarion who turned out to be a scumbag)- Filipino for Totally (do what now??)
Plaxum- Latin for Plaxo (and I’m not sure what that means)
Oh. My. God.
Unilu- Yoruba for fucking Urine (ahahahahah!)
Alright that’s all I’ve got and this has been the most wonderful discovery I’ve ever made. Thanks for following along this wild ride. I’m very disappointed about how many names and words don’t translate or are just plain names from other cultures or whatever else.
