Animation fascinates me. Or, put in another way, the ways animation expresses emotions in a scene. All the little things you might find if you take the time to look closer. It is why I take so many screen shots of scenes I love. So that I can catch all the little things that are there, that aren't in words but in actions. It is the spark that makes something come to life. That takes a static character and make them feel real. You can actually do this with live action if the actors get strongly into their roles and the sets go the extra mile (see Lord of the Rings). But animation is art, and someone's brush added all these extra things that they know someone might never know they are there, but added all the same.
I've mentioned some examples here before from Kingdom Hearts, but let me mention another one. One that is especially hidden. It is when Roxas shares his memories with Sora in Dream Drop Distance. Just as Roxas' memories fill Sora's mind we get this shot:
Tumblr media
You'd never know it is there unless you're looking for it. It is very short, but it is part of the tale of Sora's experience. But this is why I am so interested in animation. These are the things that make a story come to life. Whether it is full animation or limited. A lot can be said with little. And often it is in the little things that matter most.

2 and 5 about Sora and Namine?
Oooh good questions. Let me see... Favorite canon thing about this character? Naminé, from a more character design perspective, I love her artist bent. As an artist myself, I can't help but vibe with that. From a more emotional perspective though, I love her heart (yes she isn't suppose to have a heart but...) as well. It is one of her lines that is my favorite in the series: "Bad or good, I don't know. They're a group of incomplete people who wish to be whole. To that end, they're desperately searching for something." The fact she's willing to look beyond what is on the surface and have compassion is lovely. She thinks about what is going on, and tries to see what is, not what it seems to be. I suppose she would have a lot of time to think, while trying to help Sora for a year... I've got to pick just one for Sora? I mean, I guess for Naminé I didn't pick just one. So... You could say I love his boundless optimism, or his child-like spirit, and of course his loving, empathic, heart. All those I love, but I think what I love most, isn't any of those things. It is his desire to connect with others, and his ability to do so. But in that, it is also his struggle later that for me is also hugely relatable, and makes me want to know the rest of his story. I hope beyond hope it ends happy. Lest I end that on an less happy note, in terms of character design, I love how much of an acrobat he is. I've been playing other games lately, and it made me realize just how much I love the dance like gameplay KH has, especially for characters such as Sora. It has "juice" to use a game design term, that punch to the gameplay. KH wouldn't be what it is without him, that is for sure. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them? This will probably show my musical roots but for Naminé I think of Free by Ginny Owens. She struggles to be herself, yet by the end of her arc in KH2, she begins to embrace who she is, as well as her fate. I'm sure with time I could come up with better, but that is what the question asked ya know? As for Sora, that is easily This is Home (Every Breath is Magic) by Switchfoot. Specifically that version, because This is Home has several versions by the band. What I think is interesting, is that this version of the song was written for a Disney movie in mind, Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. It was actually used for it as a closing credit song, in fact. No wonder it fits then, ya know? Still it fits Sora's overall heart and vibe to a T to me.
Thanks for the ask Val! it was fun. Not everyday I get to talk about the "blorbos."

It should have been obvious to me, and I think I always knew, but it is hitting me now: my first love has always been and always will be stories. I've enjoyed art in many of its forms over the years, and even tried to create some of it. But that has always been one thing, a means to an end, to have a story. But...perhaps I don't have the strength or the blood sweat and tears to create something to fullness, I'll admit, but in the end it isn't the love of those things: writing, art or music, that drives me to want to create. It is the story itself. I love tearing apart a story and figuring out what makes it tick. Both Breath of the Wild and Kingdom Hearts III presented me with a puzzle to solve and put my whole heart in figuring it out. I'll spend hours just musing over things. I'll take thousands of screenshots and pour over them. Sometimes from that comes something. A piece of art, or story or most often a piece of writing on here. But I'll do it even if I don't create anything from it. If I love it, I'll spend time on it. It is the thing that no one else seemed to value, at least for those I knew personally. It's why I write here, and don't tell those I know in real life about it, unless I am close enough to them. It is a place to express what is probably one of the closest things to my heart: storytelling in all its forms. So what does that mean for the future? I feel like some how I have to take this love and make it worth something. That is my first reaction. Start a blog or YouTube and try to make something out of it. Keep working on here and begin to embrace this love of stories fully. But is that the answer? Can a love of something just be? Is the thing that matters most here is to no longer rationalize such a thing, and instead love it with ones whole heart? After all, the One who made me is also a storyteller. A storyteller in a bigger degree than I ever could. He's writing my own story even now. So why then, would I have to rationalize something that has been put in my very being by him? When all He wants is for me to simply embrace this special part of myself. It is that I think I should do. I have not a clue how to do it, or even what it means. But perhaps it is just the beginning to something more. It may lead me to finally begin to be able to fully express that heart I have underneath. That would be a great gift.

It’s probably been said already, but I think the reason I find myself gravitating away from modern western media and towards anime/k-drama/what have you is that I would so much rather watch something that’s maybe a little cheesy and overdone, but fundamentally earnest and heartfelt that knows what it is and isn’t ashamed of it, than something flashy, glossy, and manicured trying to appeal to every possible demographic and above all trying so so desperately not to be *shudders* cringy that it somehow manages to be so in every possible manner

Gosh sorry that took me so long but! Dad Link, his little girl, and his Zelda too as a treat (little thing based on Edmund Leighton's painting "The Accolade".)
And for his story, decided to put what I have for now below the cut, it all may be tweaked a bit later but yknow
For Link, I think I mentioned before that he has Sheikah ancestry in a timeline where their people are pretty scattered. The guy still feels a certain loyalty to the crown even though Sheikah looking after and working the for the royals isn't a thing so far down the timeline. Link's fighting style is less "heroic knight" with broadsword and more lightfooted assassin, prefers bow/arrow + knifes over any kind of heavy weaponry and armor. Before meeting his wife and having their daughter, pretty sure he was involved in- don't want to say "shady" work but uh- he has a certain skill set and has been in a few fights.
Had some of the best years of his life, but lost his wife to an illness too soon, making a promise to her that he would take care of their little one and she'd never have to be alone. At the point we'd meet him, its just he and his daughter, Adelyna. They're very close and mean the world to each other.
For Zelda, she's the kingdom's queen at this point in her life. She comes across somewhat cold and stoic, but she's a compassionate person under it all. When she was younger, Zelda loved to travel, seeing both her kingdom and places beyond it, but eventually her hand was forced and she had to step up and take the throne.
My thought was that at the point we meet our heroes, theres deep political unrest in the kingdom, rumors of the cycle recurring soon, and whispers of threats against the queen. After an assasination attempt, the castle is put on lockdown and leaves Zelda feeling like a caged bird. Link catches wind of what's happening and feels a deep obligation to offer his service to her because of his heritage, but with tension so high it's unlikely they'd knowingly let a kid stay in the castle (even though with it on lockdown it's arguably one of the safest places to be.) Guy is pretty torn, he can't bring himself to leave his daughter somewhere where she cant reach him if she needs, she's already lost her mama, but it's also hard to sleep at night knowing the kingdom is being held together by a thread and his skills could make a difference (especially if, debating on it, but if he already has the triforce on his hand and *knows* things won't end well without him.) Since Adelyna already has an affinity for the fairy spell (her name means small winged one on purpose ajdjfk) he makes the decision to ask her to use it so she can come with him without too many questions (hero with a fairy companion is a tale as old as time and woven into many of the legends.)
Link works quickly and quietly, it's not long before he's accepted into the castle and assigned as a sort of personal bodyguard to the queen (think triforce helps with that, although he keeps it quiet as possible and theres few people there who know who he really is.) In a room with the queen, he lacks the intimidation factor of an armored knight and classic hero, but its a bit unsettling how good he is at watching from and moving in the shadows. In his time shadowing the queen, he starts to notice tiny oddities in some interactions she has and begins to piece together an inside plot and like gosh it's scary how good he is at taking people out without anyone knowing.
Then on personal side of his story, Adelyna uses her fairy form anytime she leaves their room, only dropping the spell when she and her dad are alone. It works for a while, but the crisis lasted longer than Link ever planned on. Muffled conversations coming from his room can only be ignored for so long though, but tbh i think what finally gave him away was singing his daughter to sleep quietly. I kind of think that the queen herself was coming to request something of him but paused to listen, the guys voice sounded much different than she'd ever heard it. Whether it was her old spark of curiosity getting the better of her or suspicion, I'm not sure, but she was pretty taken aback walking in to find Link's girl there w him.
He had been pretty quiet about himself, its his nature to not say more that needed, but the lady truly had no idea he had a family at all, much less that he was a widower and single father. Think when she gave him the chance to explain himself, it was the first time he saw the softer side of her, like she had of him not long earlier, and to his surprise she allowed both to stay as long as needed. With the secret out and forced proximity queen and bodyguard have, eventually the two are able to really open up and become close friends.
(I mean, friends at the very least, I haven't decided yet, but they may be more someday- both still have a lot of healing to go through before that someday comes. And ofc, little Adelyna grows on Zelda too. The fact the little reminds the queen of her younger, spunkier self (before Life happened and she was forced to be the pretty closed off person she is now) isn't the only reason, but it definitely doesn't hurt.)
And if you made it this far, a few extra sketches as a treat and a thank you <333
RIP the guys been found out

Thinking about Rory Williams. What a character.
The completely ordinary man who doesn't become extraordinary, but is already extraordinary.
The coma nurse who can watch over patients becomes a guardian who watches over the love of his life for two-thousand years.
A man being faithful to one woman makes him one of the greatest heroes in history.
Being good, kind, honorable and faithful is a higher kind of virtue than the Doctor's flashy cleverness.
He didn't need to become a hero. He was a hero and got to prove it when put in extraordinary circumstances.
Just a fantastic character.

"The world is harsh, and all I want is to see the world through rose colored glasses. I had to tell myself to tear those off years ago. I ended up being jaded and broken. Unable to see the beauty around me, despite the brokenness." The above are my own words written early last year. They were words I understood deep within, but couldn't have put any further. They've kept coming back to me since I wrote them. I've begun to see just how true they are, and what my own heart is for storytelling. All of us face that point that I did. It is about that path of growing up. Sometime we have to face how the world really works, and all the darkness there is. Whether in the world at large, or in our own lives. And it will try to sap everything that is in our hearts. Then one day we'll find just how broken we are, and wonder: "how on earth did I get here? And..."can I go back?" One could say we have to find our inner child again. To find that child-like spirit all of us have deep within. Or perhaps, to find the truest light around us, we have to go back to that state. It is then we can find the purest love one can ever find in this world. Again, I quote myself: "I believe it was Tolkien who once said that one day adults should return to fairy tales, to see them anew. In my own way, I’ve done that. As the world became too much, so often I would return to the fairy tales, the stories that I’ve loved. They’ve reminded me that the world isn’t so dark as it sometimes seems, and dragons can be beaten. They’ve shown me who I am, how I’m built. Helped me understand myself and my world. Without them, I would be lost." For me this is why I write. To bridge that gap between the past and the present. To remind myself what matters. "I want to line the pieces up—yours and mine." - Opening lines of KH2

“Those of us who write, who sing, who paint, must remember that to a child a song may glow like a nightlight in a scary bedroom. It may be the only thing holding back the monsters. That story may be the only beautiful, true thing that makes it through all the ugliness of a little girl’s world to rest in her secret heart. May we take it seriously. It is our job, it is our ministry, it is the sword we swing in the Kingdom, to remind children that the good guys win, that the stories are true, and that a fool’s hope may be the best kind.”

Was trying to decide about sharing this but akdkf why not, I guess. Modern au Autumn and Maeve <3
Maeve glanced at the clock on the wall. The early hours of the morning always seemed to meld together in a disconcerting haze. Raindrops collected on the windows of her living room and dripped down like icing, their gentle patter the single noise filling the air.
Link was sprawled out on the floor, sharing space with her but not quite– present. The small quakes in his breaths, dark circles under his eyes, and distant gaze betrayed him. Not that he was trying hard to hide his unease.
The text from him a few hours ago wasn't an unwelcome one, but it had surprised her a bit.
You free?
Unlike him to be up this time of morning. Not that she should be either, but her rolling pin and piping bag kept her mind occupied when sleep refused to. She wiped away the flour from her hands onto her nightshirt and grabbed her phone from the counter to reply.
Yeah, what's up?
Bouncing dots blinked on and off at the bottom of her screen for a few minutes. Eventually, she received five words.
Mind if I come over?
Now here they were, him laying on the carpeted floor, her sitting cross-legged with her back against the arm of the couch. She blinked slowly, trying to gather her thoughts before speaking quietly.
“Want to talk about it?”
Link's eyes darted to her and away just as quickly. His lips parted, a strained voice barely making a sound before faltering. With an uncomfortable shift, he blinked and swallowed down any more attempts at words.
A few beats of silence passed, both lost in their own worlds. Worlds that brushed against one another but couldn't quite manage to merge.
Her quiet voice broke the silence again. “I'll be right back, okay?”
His nod was barely perceptible, but she took advantage of the acknowledgment and left the room with soft steps. Likely to check the oven, he figured.
He forced his chest to rise and fall in a steady pattern, trying to slow the uncomfortable beating inside it. He closed his eyes, shutting out the world, summoning the fragment of his will left in him to block out the voices that had been stealing his sleep the past few nights. This was a mistake… Maeve looked exhausted enough on her own without having to deal with his issues.
His train of thought and efforts to breathe deeply came to a sudden halt with a heavy weight on his chest stealing any progress he'd made. His eyes shot open to find her staring down at him. He registered an apologetic look from her as she knelt down and began to slowly stroke the… fluff? Resting on top of him.
His gaze followed her hand to the creature that had been plopped on his stomach– an abnormally large cat, its huge, soft paws methodically testing the material of his hoodie. It found its new resting place acceptable and laid down, perfectly content. It didn't take long for the pleased rumble in its chest to spread to his. His hand reached up hesitantly before burying itself in the Maine Coon's lush coat. The disheveled dropout's breathing finally slowed, the world around him beginning to come back into focus. With the tension in his face draining, he turned slightly confused, curious eyes towards her, the corner of his lip ticking upward.
Her smile widened seeing his small one. “Melfyn likes you.” A small giggle sweet as a birdsong escaped past the curled hand she held over her mouth. She laid down next to him, her cheek resting on her palm. “I hope you weren't planning on leaving any time soon because he's just found a new favorite human.”
Keeping one hand on the cat, his other gravitated towards hers, their fingers brushing. She grasped onto it, locking their fingers together, grounding him. Her pet's lazy contentment must have been contagious because it wasn't long before sleep claimed all three.
