For what it’s worth, she’s taking the whole ‘strange boy wrapped in bandages’ thing rather well. “S’funny how things like that work,” she mused, tossing another scrap to the birds. “I wonder why some people can hear ‘em and some can’t?” They couldn’t ALL have a parent in common!

“You think?” Usually that seemed to be the sort of thing people knew the answer to! Then again, Eithne hadn’t known that she had any half-siblings until just a year ago, so it wasn’t that far-fetched. “Well if you’re not one of my brothers then how did you learn to speak to them?” she asked, gesturing at the crowd of birds gathered around them. “Me, I just sort’ve… started to hear them, one day.”

No last name or anything? Then again, he didn’t seem like a normal sort of person. “Nice to meet you then, Crow,” she smiled at him. “This is the first time I’ve asked that any crows have known someone else that could speak their language. I don’t suppose you’re one of my brothers, are you?”

“Yeah, you,” she nodded at him, waiting patiently for Crow to skulk a bit closer.
Eithne just shrugged philosophically at his quiet cynicism. Crows gonna crow, after all. He might be right. The unfamiliar raven hopped up onto her shoulder, the better to dip its beak into the paper bag and steal a giblet before flying away with its prize. “When I asked if they knew anybody else who could talk to them they said you were here. They’re happy about it,” she explained to him, holding out another scrap for a bird to take from her fingers. “Dunno if it’s about food or company, though. Wanna feed them with me, and we’ll say it’s both?” Eithne offered, jiggling the little paper sack at Crow.

Eithne glanced over at him again, sticky fingers rustling inside the bag. “Yeah. I always hoped I’d meet someone else who can. They might be related to me.” It seemed like simple logic to her! “I’m Enya,” she introduced herself, and tossed another piece of meat to the cackling birds. “Who’re you?”

For a little while, she seemed happy enough just to sit there and toss meat scraps to them, chatting away. It wasn’t until a new, unfamiliar raven landed on the back of the bench and screeched at her. Eithne stopped to listen to it, asking it a question perhaps... and turned to look directly at the strange boy, squinting slightly at him. “Hey!” she called across the park to him. “Your friends are happy to see you.”

There was a girl in the park, feeding the birds. This would be a normal, wholesome scene if not for the following details:
1. The girl was feeding the crows. 2. The paper bag she was feeding them from squished and bled a bit.
Eithne tossed another chicken heart to the group of crows surrounding her, smiling as they squabbled over it before some lucky bird flew off with the choice morsel.
<All right you lot, I said no fighting!> she laughed. <I brought more than enough for everyone to share.>

“Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me~”
She sang it quietly as she settled down on top of her sleeping bag, cross-legged in front of the tiny campfire she’d coaxed to life from dry sticks and waxed cardboard. In her hands was a single-serving slice of cake in a plastic clamshell container, fresh from the grocery store three miles behind her. Her parents smiled at her from a photograph taken in the late ‘90s, propped up against her backpack where the wind couldn’t blow it away.
Eithne had found a fairly nice little clearing some few hundred feet from the roadside, sheltered from view by trees far older than herself. It was going to be cold tonight, and she wanted them as protection from the wind.
The dog that had been following her for twenty miles sat patiently nearby, but the cats had been returned to their families - even the dead one, which she’d left carefully wrapped in a shroud after taking away the gift that had made its broken body get up off the asphalt and follow her. The dog was dead too, but its fur was still soft and it didn’t smell bad. It didn’t have any memory of ‘family’ to return to, so she supposed that meant it was hers until it wanted to be buried. It wouldn’t rot as long as she kept it ‘alive’ with her mother’s gifts, but it still existed in a twilight between alive and truly dead.
She ate her birthday cake with a plastic fork from the deli counter, then with her fingers, swiping every last smear of white icing from the plastic container. It would have been nice to have a birthday card or a present, she supposed, but it would be a waste of money. Oh well, she wasn’t a child anymore! She didn’t need things like that! She repeated that to herself over and over while packing up her trash and banking the fire, while zipping up her sleeping bag, while slowly falling asleep.
She was warm, her cheek pillowed on woolen skirts. Someone was carding their clawed fingers through her black hair; she could smell blood and gunpowder and the tang of wet iron. “Happy birthday, my Enya,” came her mother’s voice, a soft lilt that carried sweet death and the laughter of ravens beneath. “Of course I remembered you.” Still half-asleep, Eithne just burrowed closer to her mother’s warmth, fingers wrapped in the Morrigan’s bloodstained dress.

I don’t know how it happened (I blame GIS and Pinterest), but I finally managed to find a FC for Eithne! Her hair’s usually too long in the icons I have but Emily Rudd looks so much like her! And just in time for Eithne’s birthday tomorrow, too...
